Like many, I got into computer science to make games. I released some shareware and freeware, and even worked on Flight Simulator 2002.
This video explains some of the differences between what you might expect about being a game developer, and what it's actually like. Also, it compares being a software engineer in games vs. general commercial development.
This is based on my 30 years as a software engineer, including 15 as a principal engineer at Microsoft, Amazon, and Google.
