After almost a year sabbatical, I've been less motivated to do significant tasks at home. I decided to take a solo cruise in an indoor room and see if it was conducive to doing more work.
Here's my experience trying to write 10 pages a day while on an 8-night Alaska cruise, how much it cost, and how I went about it.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
00:00 The motivation
00:52 Picking cruising
01:30 Finding a ship
01:59 Priced by CABIN
03:12 Lots of add-on costs
04:15 Carnival Spirit: I liked it.
05:12 Trying to work
06:23 Different place, same problems
07:14 What I accomplished
08:31 Summary
I used CruiseCritic.com and cruiseDirect.com to look for cruises, they were both quite helpful.
The ship I went on was the Carnival Spirit, on its 8-night itinerary from Seattle up to Alaska and back.
www.carnival.com/cruise-ships...
I am not getting anything for recommending these sites / ships. Just sharing info.

Hi, good video and thanks for all the mid and sr level career advice! It's very difficult to find credible advice at this level. I think a lot of the real benefit comes from going somewhere with a specific purpose vs not having a clear objective. I think it matters a lot less if that's a home office, a cruise or a wherever. I had two similar experiences doing two, two week hotel quarantines in Taiwan. The first I liked much purpose and didn't really do much and the second I had a plan and finished most of what I set out to accomplish at work, learning, and playing games. Thanks again for all the advice!

Hi John! Been watching a lot of your videos recently as I am starting my first job out of college at Amazon in the fall (SDE I). Just wanted to say thanks for making really unique and informative content! Out of curiosity, what games have you been enjoying lately? I've been playing a lot of Civ 6 myself.

Thanks for watching! I haven't made the jump to Civ 6 myself, I played a lot of Civ 2 and am planning to do some Civ4 in the coming months. These days I am mostly playing World of Tanks!

@@jamaicanaforeign5326 I'm embarrassed to say, I didn't do a single event on the ship! Maybe next time. The comedy shows were the one thing I was considering...

I'm fully nomadic! So in some ways, my life is entirely "getting away to work." I think you captured many of my thoughts. One thing I've really grown to appreciate is to keep my workspace flexible and follow my intuition. Some days I wake up and it feels like a "home office" day, some days it's coffee shop, sometimes set up a hotspot out in nature. I've also found a change of scenery is a good way to hit the "reset" button on my focus. Enough about me, though. What's this mysterious book you're working on?

It never occurred to me to mix it up frequently to keep things fresh / workable, I like that idea! Do you travel to vacation-style places to work too, or mostly stick around driving distance from home? Thanks for commenting! The book is going to be hopefully a guide to owning your career as a software engineer, focused more on AFTER you get your first job, through your career until you're finally ready to retire. Shooting for finishing it this year, but we'll see. If I had a nickel for every project I started and didn't finish...

@@TheDeliberateEngineer I travel to vacation style places as well, but they aren't usually the best for my productivity. Internet is less reliable, not conducive to meetings, usually not a comfortable place to work. I'll be keeping an eye out for the book. Would love to see more material aimed at the mid-level and beyond career path, as that's not as often discussed or catered to.
