Good video, but I think it's important to also mention the more serious long term health damage neuroleptics can cause (e.g. heart disease, diabetes, hippocampal atrophy, kidney damage etc) and the addictive nature of psychiatric meds in general, as is now increasingly being revealed (even though the pharma lobby has for decades tried to suppress these findings).

Finally a voice of reason! It's not black and white, I think you did a very good job explaining this. Nobody wants to take medications which have a lot of negative side effects. Exercise, diet, social interaction, being in nature, they all have a role in getting better. But sometimes medications do help people, if nothing else works. I completely agree with you, thank you so much for making this video!

I have a question! Love your videos Doug. They bring me great hope. I recently went through a bout where I lost my Klonopin for 6 days and it tweaked my nervous system hard. I am having panic attacks every morning (I deal easy with those), sometimes during the day but not always, and now at night time too. My doctor gave me Prozac but I am sick of being stuck in the pill cycle since I was 10 years old. What is the cure to all of this naturally? Time, exercise, anti-anxiety diet, CBT, social rapport?... Anything else? I understand I may have to go through a lot of suffering and it won't be a quick fix but my nervous system and panic disorder is haywire right now. Besides the above what can I do to bring it down to a manageable level?

You are not alone. I have found that divorce/breakup is the most common trigger for depression. I will making a video of this in July. In the meantime, find a good therapist with whom you can process your feelings. If it is a divorce, find a divorce support group. These groups exist on meetup.com, and there may be other kinds of "break-up" groups. If not, you can start one. Also, there are probably good books on the subject. Google "coping with a relationship breakup loss" and you will get lots of information on how to cope. Here is one of the many articles that I found. www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/05/dealing-with-a-breakup-7-tips_n_3389381.html

I do not comprehend why to dislike the act of taking a pill that makes life more livable. Of course there are side-effects, but I find them clearly outweigh the relief they give. It is kind of somewhat exciting to have something that one can pop inside their mouth in hope of things turning brighter within only a couple of weeks. The only thing I dread about ADs is the withdrawal, or not taking them. Cymbalta withdrawal is a living nightmare and I do not want to go through that anymore. If I'm to ever take Cymbalta again, that would be in a life-or-death situation, and will never even try to get off of that afterwards.

I'm supposed to be sleeping and that ending made me laugh and wake up my dogs! Thanks Douglas! I've decided to try some meds for anxiety when I get back. I don't really want to touch the depression with meds yet, if that makes sense. I understand the "flat" feeling though. When mine were actually working, I felt flat. Very 2 dimensional. It sucked. But I think when I get back from the mountains I'm going to try anxiety meds first. Then see what happens.
@DouglasBloch
@DouglasBloch 7 жыл бұрын
That sounds good. What type of anxiety meds are you thinking of taking? Some SSRI antidepressants such as Paxil are said to reduce anxiety. Then there are the benzodiazepines such as Klonopin, Xanax and Ativan, but those should be used at low doses to prevent dependence.

What advice to you have for someone having taken SSRIs or SNRIs for 25 years and struggling with the side effects you’ve mentioned! However when I stop the drugs, even very gradually, I suffer severe anxiety, total loss of appetite and have got to the stage of contemplating suicide to relieve the agony. I was 1st prescribed these drugs for an episode of anxiety which affected my work in my 20s. I had experienced anxiety and panic attacks for years before this but never anywhere near the intensity on stopping medication. I still hope to get off them but last time was very frightening and hard for my family to witness and cope with

For short term use yes antidepressants do work, just not how you think. They numb you, some. Individuals experience a increase in dopamine causing euphoria for a short time. None of these medications should carry on long term as we currently have no research beyond 6 months showing improvement or safety. They work by disabling the Brain... That doesn't sound like something you should bother with. The side effects are terrible but it's the withdrawal that's the problem. And for anything thinking I won't go withdrawal from the medication then lol, doesn't work that way sweetie... Ever leave your medication at home while on a trip? Then there's tolerance withdrawal where even when you take the drug you still go through withdrawal, then there's interdose withdrawal where the dose no longer covers the full duration that it once did. These withdrawals aren't as bad as benzos but some I don't know if you can come back from and the problem I brought up above... Neither does science, psychiatry is rooted in puesdoscience. It's all guess work, theories and check lists. You should see how the DSM-3 was created which layed the foundation for other editions (currently up to DSM-5).a bunch of other psychiatrists sit in a room and vote on what they want in the book, no diagnostic advances or nothing like that... Just talking about what they want to see in the book. One psychiatrist didn't one of the diagnoses in the book because he had one of its symptoms. These pills should not be trust.

Hi Douglas, I found the ending funny too and am glad that you left it like that. I don't have a family doctor or GP to ask for a referral so haven't gone to a different doctor yet. I have been thinking about/doing research into depression/hopeless a lot and realised something. I think I have situational depression. the reason why I got really depressed last Dec is because I went through a loss and yesterday my depression/hopelessness got really bad because of the result of the UK election. The current PM made UK visa rules unfairly strict (even a spouse visa) when she was a home secretary and that is the reason why my British husband and I can't go back there. But the labour party is aware of this issue and they specifically said they were going to scrap the unfair requirement so I was really hoping they would manage to win. It would change our situation completely. But unfortunately the result wasn't good enough. It ended up being a hung parliament but the PM got help from a different party and she and her party is still in power. This discouraged/disappointed me and took away all my hope even though I tried not to set my expectation too high. It made me feel "oh great, I'll have to be stuck where I am and suffer forever. Why do I want to keep going ans try so hard to survive when nothing is getting better?". What can I do to cope with situational depression?
@DouglasBloch
@DouglasBloch 7 жыл бұрын
The great psychiatrist Victor Frankl said when he was in the concentration camps, "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." This often begins by expressing gratitude for the things in your life that are working, having a loving partner, perhaps having your health, having a roof over your head, etc. At the same time you do your best to change the current circumstances, perhaps by contributing to the labour party.

Douglas Bloch Thank you for the reply. To be honest I find it really hard to be truly grateful. (this sounds like I'm a terrible person)I try to but it feels very forced. This hopelessness gets to me and I feel nothing is going well. This is so convincing. I also feel defeated because sadly there is nothing I can do about things like the election/visa rules. My depressive episode has been going on for quite a while now so it's hard to believe this will end someday. (someday sounds too far away anyway) just surviving and getting through each day makes me feel stupid as this life and the whole struggle seem pointless and meaningless. Have you felt this way before?
@DouglasBloch
@DouglasBloch 7 жыл бұрын
I have certainly been in your place, many times. So I try different strategies to change my state of mind. My last depressive episode I resorted to ECT. If you hang in there, something will eventually work. Try to find just one moment each day when you can experience some pleasure. It may be fleeting, it does keep hope alive.

I became a binge drinker for almost ~8 years and was only able to stop once I got in medication. I take a shitload of Lamictal as well as Lyrica, Topamax, and Seroquel, and the main side effects I’ve noticed are slight difficulty concentrating and remembering as well as some loss of sex drive. But that could easily be due to severe sleep deprivation (~5 hours per night for almost 4 years) due to a demanding work schedule, lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet. I take natural supplements that have helped a lot with the sexual part. Otherwise I feel fine. Aside from medication, meditation has been the most important thing in my life. It is what has truly brought me back from the brink. Realizing our spiritual nature is the most important thing we can do in this life in my opinion. Thanks so much for your content!

You’re welcome. And thank you for your amazing recovery story. I hope you continue to stay well. I am also on Lamictal and Seroquel and they seem to help

Ah yes, weight gain, I gained about 30kg in 2-3 months when I was on low doses (for my size) of Fluoxetine and Abilify, I went from 120kg to 150kg, I'm 1.97m tall so it's not that extreme, but now I'm losing a lot of weight but the striae are still there. Nice error at the end :).

Hey Doug, i guess it would be better and advisable to say "Hope you've found my video helpful" at the end instead of saying "Hope you've enjoyed it" as they deal with serious medical condition and problems" and not made for fun or entertainment. That said, they are very informative and helpful, indeed. But not entertaining and delightful for sure! So spare the laughs, please!

I like your idea of using the word helpful. When I said "I hope you enjoyed it" I was actually thinking "helpful." Helpful is the better word (as is useful), and I will use these words from now on. Thanks for the suggestion.

Anyone's personal treatment for any Depression diagnoses should be evaluated by a qualified psychiatric Dr. or Psych Nurse. There are several levels of Depression, I feel your input is not really qualified to give opinion's when it comes to psychiatric medication's. Just my thoughts, I know no one who loves taking any medicine, but we do.

Sorry if I didn’t make that clear. You should always consult with the doctor before making any decisions
