There were a lot of Hooah Hooah privates in Basic and AIT that wanted to go SF or Ranger Batt. The reality was that only a few of them REALLY wanted it, and got through Selection or RASP. I was fine doing my 4 years as a line medic with a regular Infantry unit. Appreciate the honest review about the not so glorious parts of the Army and SF life. It's not negative, just reality. The video game generation needs to hear this stuff, otherwise they join and become shitbags when they realize you have to do layouts, motor pool duties, cleaning latrines, standing in change for command ceremonies for hours trying not to pass out, all the online trainings like SHARP, SSD1/s, etc etc. And not just hear about only the cool operator shit.

So as a former Combat Controller in the Air Force, we did these inventories for the first half of my enlistment.... they sucked like you said..... then the Air Force being the Air Force decided to get smart and they bought us these nifty scanners that would scan the little coded bar code on the items and we could knock out a full inventory in like a few hours rather than going clip board style through the entire damn thing. Love the guy that came up with that brilliant idea.. lmao

I had someone very close to me pass away in June. His wife knew he was in the Army, but nothing more. My brother was asked to do a eulogy. He did some research, and we were all flabbergasted (including his wife LOL) We found out he was a captain in a Ranger regiment, then went to selection, and earned his green beret. He taught boy scouts. He raised $ for veterans. He would give the shirt off his back to anybody in need. I'm proud and honored to have had him in my life.

@@dylancoleman8545 The brotherhood is a big part of it yes, but at the end of the day you surrender your life to a greater purpose in order to find that which might give your life ultimate meaning. Without that shared dedication to the cause, the brotherhood in my view means much less.

@@andyfhilario1239 Hey Andy - Good on you for your reply. Frankly I didn't expect one 🙂. I asked as a whim really as I am getting on in years and find myself without a homeland. I lost that after politics screwed us back in 1980 and my ex and I parted company a few years back. My sf service was prior to 1980 while still a teenager. Hard to believe now but there you go. Reading some of the comments on here I am staggered at how naive these plebes are. Truly. I thought often since of trying to join US forces and missed a couple of opportunities over time due to 3rd party compromises not that those have stood the test of time either. In a nutshell, are there service jobs available for foreigners with sf combat experience who are now in permanent winter camo (white haired 😉). Think consulting too. I really wish videos like this had been around in 1994. At the time, while I was on leave at home from South Korea, I had told an older friend that I wanted to go SF, and that a special program was open that would take E-4's. My friend said simply, "You need to talk to Dave," and left it at that. A few days later, I was invited to have a conversation with Dave. I spent an hour and a half listening to victory and horror stories of Dave's eighteen months in Viet Nam as an SF operator. I wasn't shocked at his accounts of every fucked up thing that happened. Nor the complaints of how a 9mm couldn't cut through the jungle brush. What steered me off of my potential SF path was what Dave had to say about how things were when he got back from the war. Several years later, Dave had a daughter. As she grew, whenever she skinned a knee or elbow or finger, he went after her hard, like an SFAS instructor about getting up and moving on. He couldn't turn off his rage when it came on. And he hated it about himself. I recognized that trait in myself, and elected to opt out of the application process. There are times I wish I would have gone on, for sure. But in the end, I feel I made the right decision.

Biggest i had seen was the turnover on teams. With guys being SWCS eligible at 36 months its hard to maintain continuity on the ODA. With commanders and sgm measuring teams based off experience and performance it becomes difficult to get to the top or stay at the top with guys getting moved out so quickly. With the Q course pumping out numbers it takes almost a year to get new guys up to speed on everything. By then sometimes those new guys are being pushed to SR positions on a team. It can put them in a bind because you don't know what you dont know. It creates lag on the team which could prevent getting top missions.

I am 2nd Decade Special Forces (1964). During my service we looked for team players who were fully qualified in their specialty with high levels of integrity. During selection, instructors looked for those who would help their peers and share while under extreme pressure. There was a huge dip in the standards during the latter years of the Vietnam War because of our losses that we paid a huge price for during the post war years until Colonel Howard took over Camp McCall and SF selection and the standards went up to a very high level. Today's SF qualified soldier are among the best to come out of the system.

I attended a course with former SF guys as instructors. He had us teach another student how to load and make a firearm ready without verbal instructions, only demonstration. To simulate a student that didn't speak your language. Interesting twist for an instructor candidate...glad I never had to use it.

Whats funny is they had us doing overnight inventory layouts even when I was an 11B38. And I hated that shyt! 1 PVS/14 came up missing (more like miscounted) and they locked the whole Battalion down. Thank you for your service brother!

Inventory sounds like a closing shift during the holiday season at a clothing retail store fix everything thing in the store! only with that you're leaving at like 1am or 2am lol. My question is there coffee during these inventories? if so I'm pretty sure I can survive that tedium lol. But love the video!

Inventories blow, especially when your the Ammunition accountable Officer running AHAs and ASPs its a nightmare. Thank goodness for those Chief Warrant Officers. You hit the nail on the head with receiving ammunition for your range. It is such a pain in the ass getting ammunition no matter if its a 5.56 to a 40mm grenade. Just some key notes if running ranges if you open boxes of Ammunition just use it or else ya got to count every single round of ammo, its easier to expend it and weigh it than count it. Make sure that all the same dodics stay together. And the amount of ammunition that is allotted per Company is dictated by your Companies weapon densities and MTOE but is already figured in at your Companies yearly training brief with your Battalion and Brigade Commanders. If you want to order specific ammunition get yourself a yellow book. Great videos, although I am not SF or any other Special Operations soldier its great to see someone with first hand knowledge just being real.

I was in B/1/7 starting in 1980 as as 91B2S (now 18D). I don't remember inventory being such a pain. I do recall "hearts & minds", being an armed diplomat, teacher. That's what set us apart from other units - we were there for the long haul.

"If you can listen to this video and you still wanna join, then maybe GB is for you." This right here is the biggest thing I've felt as a guy going for Ranger Batt, and just seen with other dudes that wanna try to go SF or anything like it. If you can hear the shittiest parts about the job and still be more than happy enough to be one of the team, then you're more than likely one of the guys they need. You wanna do cool guy shit? You gotta embrace the suck of the day to day jobs too, like doing inventory.

Thankfully, a lot of the (very few) wrong guys we got in the teams ended up "selecting themselves out" by screwing up some egregious stuff (losing a weapon, misusing OPFUND, or a DUI). On my first tour to AFG we lost two medics (as in "they got kicked out of SF"; different teams) to them self-medicating controlled substances. Both medics were from the 18X program. Theres a reason teams are usually short a couple of guys - SF is not for everyone. One has to be mature and dependable to stay in SF. Honestly, although qualifying to get into a team is very difficult for most soldiers who even try, staying in SF until retirement is even harder. Again, it is not for everyone. That being said, I loved that life.
