I bought a 2013 Rav4 XLE from a lease and she just turned over 70,000 miles. The car has been trouble-free, not even requiring brake light bulbs. Brakes however have just started to pulse and I will be replacing pads and rotors soon. I worked my way through college as a foreign auto mechanic, I did something different after college, and think I can get away with doing the work myself. Thanks for all of your KZfaq videos they are very informative. Eventually, Red Rad Rav4 will get replaced and I am looking to the Rav4 Prime as a possible replacement. Your hybrid series is great and the information will help me make an informed decision. Thanks again and may our Lord bless you and yours.

Thanks for the excellent videos! The knowledge you're sharing is really helping me figure out whether a hybrid is for me. I'm wondering if there are any easy ways to protect the high-voltage battery in the rav4 (which you mentioned is located under the back seat) from liquid spills? Some sort of waterproof cover or lining? If I end up with a rav4 I'd be using it a lot as an "SUV RV", possibly even doing a light camper conversion. Carrying around water jugs, perhaps having some sort of a makeshift sink, eating in the back when the weather is bad, etc. would all increase the risk of spills!

Great video, and great tip on checking for transmission leak. We purchased a 2015 Limited 5/20. Shortly after noticed small ATF drip. Long story short Toyota replaced transmission under powertrain warranty. Was told there is an issue with the transmission housing casting. It may appear that transmission pump seal is bad, but is actually a defect in the housing. Replacing pump seal (very expensive due to labor involved) won’t fix. If not under warranty dealer charges $4200 for transmission and approx. 16 hours labor.

@@TheCarCareNut I have a 2014 RAV4 AWD Limited that we purchased new. Now with almost 198,000 miles on it, my transmission is beginning to slip. So I'm taking it to the dealership for a diagnostic eval. It's obviously out of warranty. So I'm dreading the results. I can't afford another new RAV4 Limited; they cost around $45,000. And this video scared me because of the COMPLEXITY of the car and therefore its eventual cost to repair! So now 85 and retired, I'm in a real dilemma!!

Id get rid the 2014 and try looking for a 2016 -2019 rav4 if you like rav4, or a 2009 and newr 4 runner, or older matrix 2005-2008 , or a 2015 and newer camry, 2015 and newer rx350, gs350, es350. New car prices are insane and not worth it.

I have a rav4 hybrid limited with 102000 miles and it's been great. Just put the first set of front brakes on and still have 60% on the rears. The timing chain cover oil leak was under warranty. I know if done at the dealership was $1900 for replacement. It's only 4.6 quart oil change with filter. If it's over filled it'll cause the timing cover to leak. Water pump died at 70,000 miles. I've owned more than 50 vehicles and this is a great car.

@@davidjoles537 Thanks for sharing your experience. Originally I wanted to get a 2022 RAV4 XLE premium gas model. Gas prices are increasing in BC, Canada and I was starting to lean toward the hybrid. I think it would be a good choice except that I’m doing a lot less driving. The supply of both new and used RAV4 models is nonexistent. I would have to order one. I still think they are the best compact SUV choice. If a good 2018 came along I would buy that either gas or hybrid.

Care Care Nut AMD, today I looked at a 2017 Rav 5 hybrid Toyota Certified with 37,800 miles for $27,500. Per your fabulous video instructions, I checked for the oil leak - none. I found the filters which were down by the floor and checked them out. The filters looked a bit like an outside dryer vent that hadn’t been cleaned in a while - not horrendous but not definitely not clear/clean. I was actually surprised that the dealership had not checked and cleaned them but it did give me an idea that it may never have been checked. Does the dirty filter mean I should walk away? As I was taking the test drive, I educated the salesman about your channel and tested the steering (no accident). Clean carfax and regular oil changes. Your very valued thoughts?

Thanks for the tips. My oldest daughter bought a new rav4 le in 2017. I sent her a link. Ps I have an 09 sienna. The rockers on the passenger side has rust holes in it. I have never seen a Sienna with rust like mine. When I bought it 4 years ago I notices it had rust starting at the spot welds and thought the metal wasn't prepped correctly.

bell possible. I am second owner, but people I bought from were honest. I noticed after I bought it the spot welds hidden by some weather stripping were all rusting on both sides. I just figured the plant didnt prep the metal after it was heated up by the spotwelding. I also had a neighbor who would aim his mower deck towards my car while he was blowing the leaves off the driveway

I'm thinking to change my 2011 FJ cruiser for a 2018 Rav4 bc I moved to a apartment and it's tight parking, plus gas prices are crazy lately, quite grateful for quality content like this

Dear sir, please do keep your FJ cruiser if you can! If we ignore high fuel consumption, this is the best and most durable of Toyotas made for decades. Plus it has stunning looks

Just found your video and this may sound like a dumb question Should I really trust Toyota Dealers for all my Rav4 service? Great info by the way 👍🏻
@TheCarCareNut
@TheCarCareNut 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a very good question. Not all dealerships are good. And not all mechanics within a good dealership are good. Your best bet is to get to know the advisor and the mechanic working on the car so you’d know who’s taking care of your car and can make a better judgement if you should trust them or not

They are good cars. Have many of the same things as the 14-19 highlander. If it was well maintained and taken care of it would be a good used car to buy

I have a 2014 RAV4 and have not experienced any of the problems mentioned in this video. I’ll bet most other owners don’t either, just look at Consumer Reports reliability ratings based on their very large number of responses.

The 2018 Rav4s are a little top heavy especially when cornering. The suspension is not that great. I recommend changing out the rug floor mats with the rubber bucket ones (e.g. Weathertech) especially in the trunk to prevent high voltage battery damage from accidental fluid spills.
@ejej6934
@ejej6934 2 жыл бұрын
You're correct: The suspension is far from great. I loaded my 2017 RAV4 for a weeklong camping trip and installed a hitch-mounted bike rack to carry 2 bikes. The headlights ended up pointing so high in the air that almost every oncoming vehicle was flicking their high beams at me, thinking I had my highs on. I had to get the dealer to adjust my headlights as low as they can be adjusted, just so the headlights would be about where they should point when on low beam. The car I traded in for the Toyota was a Subaru Forester. I could load that car any way I wanted, including putting about 250 pounds of sand bags in the back in the winter, and it rode level and the headlights aimed normally.

Thanks for your Toyota videos, Content always provided great insight on inner workings and quite important maintainance aspects. May i request your thoughts / small talk on engine block heaters for Rav4 2017-18 models. I was always confused which one to use given the various after market heater available ( Oil pan heaters, externel block heaters, or coolent heaters etc..). I checked my local dealer who quoted me 500 Euro for engine heater and 800 euro if wanted to have both engine and cabin heeter installed for my Rav4.

Thank you for watching my videos! While my experience with block heaters is limited due to my area but usually an external block heater is the best option.

TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR A 2014-2017 Rav4 as of 2021. I am noticing a lot of these Rav4's in the rust-belt that they have rust forming in the license plate bolt holes and are spreading to the outer paint & bubbling. And other spots of the tailgate-hatch paint are bubbling as caused by rust.

After watching many of your videos....Thank you!....I decided to get back into maintenance mode myself after being spoiled with my first new car... a 2017 RAV4 Hybrid. Haven't needed to do serious repairs because of its age -- Only 49000 miles. But, I decided to look at the leaks you covered in the video and I have a coolant leak that is just starting. Levels are good but I can see the telltale sign on the hood. The water pump looks pretty straight forward to replace as a DIY project.I've replaced water pumps, starters, and A/C compressors on 80's and 90's cars but I'm a bit afraid of working on this Hybrid. Will I be getting in over my head being that this is a hybrid or is it a relatively easy job for a DIYer equipped with a garage full of tools?

Hi! Thank you for watching. I would recommend it with good service history as the 4 cylinder engine is known to burn oil if not maintained. The V6 is a good option as well
