ST owner here. The ST is one of those cars that i think needs some work to have that coolness factor that the RS has straight from the factory, but the ST is super fun to drive right out of the gate and even as i've considered maybe switching to a new car, i can't quite justify getting rid of a perfectly good vehicle that i also really enjoy driving. Don't feel bad if you can't afford the RS, the ST feels really good to drive and is especially great as a daily

The ST starts off "softer" than an RS. That allows you to push it towards the RS level to get it to where you want it. The RS is pretty hardcore right from the factory. If it's too hard moving it down a notch or two is more of challenge.

Never driven RS but have owned my ST for about 6 years now, bought it used with about 2300 miles on it. Came with Roush exhaust and a turbosmart BOV. I added the Mountune MP 275 kit to it at around 8k miles. Did the shifter bushings and the Ford Performance short shifter (Which I think is discontinued). Its been a great car, approaching 96k and haven't had any major repairs. All in all, for about 3 years I could not get enough of this car. Then I started putting a lot of highway miles on it due to a long distance relationship and it turned into "just a car". I neglected the paint and the washing it due to driving about 3 hours hours away each weekend. But, I still did the plug and oil changes... usual maintenance. Recently dropped about 3k in "bigger" maintenance. New pads and rotors, AC service, trans flush, walnut blasting, radiator flush, alignment and what appeared to be an oil pan leak, turns out it was the PCV oil separator. I feel like the ball joints in the front are about to need replacing, debating on doing new springs, struts and bushings at the same time. No major rattles, squeaks or clunks. Although I will say that the roads, freeways and highways here in Arizona (for the most part) are pretty nice to drive on. Once all the major maintenance was done I started doing more aesthetic upgrades (headlights, taillights etc... wheels are next). Got the paint back into good shape and washing it once every two weeks minimum, if not every week. I have fallen in love with it all over again.

The RS was my dream car when they first were announced so I went from an ST to a RS back in early 2018 and got a steal on the car so I was happy with it but in todays market I would for sure go with the ST especially if you want to make big power without feeling stressed if the RS will handle it or not. But the RS is for sure a thrill to drive even in stock form.

RS owner here -- I suppose it also comes down to where you came from. I went from RSX Type-S to MazdaSpeed 3 to Focus RS, so I really wanted to experience the AWD... and like Cameron said, the cultural aspect of owning a (relatively) rare car that made a big impact was part of the appeal as well. I've modded mine similarly to what Cameron has did with his (I didn't do a suspension or exhaust upgrade) and I still look forward to each and every drive. But yeah, if anyone's got any questions about long-term day-to-day RS ownership, let me know!

I feel I’m an outlier of owning this car, I’m 32, I’m the old man of the group, I have had my ST for seven years now and while I have always wanted an RS, the ST is an amazing car. It is everything you'd possible want out of a hot hatch at this price point now. Heated seats, heated steering wheel, you have a boost, oil temp and pressure gauges right there. The analog gauges are here, while everything is digital now. You don't have the infotainment just sitting on top of the dash. I think it is under appreciated. While the RS is the bigger brother and comes with a valved exhaust and headlights that move with the steering inputs (ST3 package also has that). I feel you cannot go wrong with either or, if you’re new to the platform and can afford the RS, go for it!! But to upgrade to the RS from an ST, I feel you would rob yourself from experiencing a different platform. Also I agree with the seats even in the ST. If you’re taking a road trip over 2.5 hours. The seats become uncomfortable… maybe it’s old age.. anyway bottom line, both cars are great and truly comes down to price, wants and goals

Yes, it does not sound as good as petrol version of ST or RS but still.... it's a hell of fun car to drive - quick enough, family friendly, very economical if not pushed to it's limits. I got my RS about a year ago and love it. It has an awe track exhaust which is super nice. Other than that, its stock. I guess my only complaint is that it drives very stiff. I daily mine and don't mind it, but sometimes my passengers complain depending on what kind of road you're on. With that being said, the car is a true pleasure to drive. I think you always could push an ST a little bit more than you can with an RS, but the RS is always going to be faster. if that makes sense. I've only driven an ST a few times and it was also pretty much stock. My verdict: If you want a fun car to upgrade, daily it, and be reliable, the ST is perfect. If you're willing to pay a bit more and not go too crazy on mods, I would go with an RS. The RS is tough as nails. Mine has 112k miles and still feels incredible. Hope that helps!

I agree the exterior of the RS does look pretty sick but the 15-18 ST's also look sweet. I went with an ST for the price and availability an RS was twice as much and much harder to get ahold of. So, an ST at a decent price ( mind you i bought mine 3 yrs ago) and putting a couple grand in it makes it a great daily and or a light track duty car, and for me personally i dont like the blue stitching and accents on the interior of the RS the ST is cleaner in my opinion. All things considered the ST was just what i wanted, I love it.

Another ST owner. The RS and the ST basically look the same to me. I bought the OEM rear RS spoiler (expensive!) had it filled in and painted to match the Kona Blue color of my ST. I later added jack rails, front-side-rear skirt, hood struts and tinted the windows. It's not an RS but it's close enough to the look of an RS that my RS itch is satisfied!

Former base model ST owner here. The ST is a fun car, but it's so lower rung when compared to the other cars in the segment. I couldn't get over how terrible the interior was. My ST was bought used, but low milage. I LOVED the seats, but the dash/console was just a janky mess. Huge gaps in the interior parts and hard plastics all over. That's one reason why I ditched mine. I couldn't imagine paying Focus RS prices and getting basically the same interior. There are other cars in this segment that put the RS to shame when it comes to build quality/materials.

ST owner with experience in both. I have always felt like a full bolt-on E30 ST was 70-80% of an RS. That's not to say that the RS isn't fucking sweet, because an ST is fucking sweet and the RS is better, even if the cost difference isn't justified by that difference. Personally, for example, I think that my ST3 interior is better than an RS because I have full leather. This likely comes down to me having young kids and cleaning that Alcantara would be a nightmare. Sure I may not be as fast, but it's pretty close where it counts. What make me sad is I likely will not ever own an RS... I just can't see myself getting out of my ST and buying an RS. I will want to experience something completely different.

Because of your st video is the reason I bought my car. It's my first 4 banger and hatchback. It is a awesome drive and the ST I think in my opinion can do just as well as the rs minus the awd. I’m gonna be completely honest, I have spent reasonable amount of time in both the ST and the RS. Nothing about the ST made me fall in love with the car, that’s not to say that it is a boring car, or that it is unpleasant to drive. It is still a fun car, but it does not hold a candle in any regards to the RS in my opinion. The seats in the RS has never been uncomfortable either in my opinion. For context on my experience as a driver, I have countless hours in driving sims and nearly a hundred hours of real track time spanning a couple vehicles. I know how to be fast in a FWD car. I would still take the RS all day every day for a daily driver over the ST.

ST is way better (bit biased since i own one) But you wanna make power on an RS, you take an ST 2.0 block and stroke it to a 2.3. The 2.3 is good for the stock 350hp it comes with. Also not to mention, yea the RS is all wheel drive but is primarily fwd and if you track the RS, the rear diff will overheat and the ECU will freak out and you'll essentially be driving an overpriced ST haha. RS is good stock but nothing more. FBO ST with a hybrid turbo, not even a big turbo just bigger compressor in stock housing and some E and you'll be smoking RS's and having more fun doing it lol

i own a focus st, never driven rs so take this with a grain of salt. i’m had my car for about a year now and it’s amazing. sure all wheel drive is better, then rs aethetics are better, etc. but the driving experience in the st is still amazing. you get a lot of slip in first and second gear but it’s not worth spending the extra money for the rs is that regard because it improves your throttle control since you HAVE to improve your throttle control. also the focus st is easily moddable to make a lot more power. you can get tunes with launch control to help the slip a little bit, etc. again i have not driven an rs and of course it’s obviously better i highly doubt it’s worth the price. the st is an amazing car, i love it so much and the only things that i would change is the loss of traction in first and second (only on wide open throttle) and i would prefer all wheel drive but again you can get launch control and the all wheel drive isn’t worth the extra money imo edit: oh and i forgot the seats. i have the an st2 so i have the upgraded recaro seats and i love them. when i have larger seat sit in the car, they don’t say they’re uncomfortable, they just say that they’re “tight” so they are definitely more bearable than the rs seats. jus then again i’m 5’10 135 lbs so i’m a pretty skinny dude. so if you’re like me, you will love the st seats but if you’re a little larger, you may not love them but you like them more. and you could also just go for the st1 with the normal seats because they are way more forgiving with the bolstering.

To keep the power of the RS at maximum. 1) Use Motul 5w-50 and Always keep an eye on the dipstick. Keep your oil at max all the time. 2) Use Liqui Moly Gasoline System Cleaner. I have used so many different injector cleaners on my RS and the only one that gives you satisfying results is Liqui Moly. Liqui Moly is expensive but it friggin works great. 3) Keep an eye on your plugs. I got mine pre-gapped from mountuneusa. These 3 basic things will keep your power the same from the day it was new at the dealer.

I bought my first ST in August of 2016, a 2013 ST3 with 38k miles and very clean. I did an intercooler, intake, downpipe, and cobb ap with stratified tunes. I loved the car but quickly wanted a face-lift ST and in March of 2018 I bought a 2017 kona blue ST3 with 1700 miles on it. I transfered the parts I already had from the 13 and then went way farther with bolt ons with the new car. I loved this car and it was my daily and it was a blast to drive everyday but the want for a RS never went away. April of 2023 I bought a 2016 nitrous blue rs with 36k miles and the only mod is a borla attack cat back. I won't say I don't miss the 17 st .because I do but I will say stock car for stock car the RS is hands down the better car. No its not as quick on light acceleration as the ST was with every bolt on and tuned but above 4k rpm the RS is a whole different animal..STOCK.. The ST was game over at 5200 rpm. I know you didn't like the stiff ride of the RS but it doesn't bother me and I guess I'm used to the recaros after owning 3 focuses with them. My thoughts on the comparison is if you you don't or can't spend the money on an RS that's fine because the ST is perfectly fine and will do what you asked of it but for the full experience you have to mod the car. I feel the rs is just built better, it feels more solid than the ST.

Hey Folks! I'm the proud owner of both. I stumbled on the ST years ago when I was looking around for a GTI. Always was a Golf fan, but my friend said you should really give the Focus ST a try. Low and behold, I blindly bought one, and I absolutely loved it! It was the car in which I learned to drive stick, yes I bought it without knowing and just had my friend drive it back 😅. It is a '17 Focus RS ST3. Then, as time went by, I obviously got more and more intrigued with the Focus RS, I tend to get bored quickly, I wasn't bored though, just enticed by the perspective of own a RS, it's looks, and that engine! So when Cameron got it, yes the same one speaking here, I just loved how exciting and fun it all sounded. Needless to say, did research, looked around, drove one that was bit beat up, instantly fell in love on who much more poised the car was. I didn't buy the beat up one, I bought one I found with only 8K on the ODO for a very cheap price. Which is what convinced me to get it. It all worked out for me because I handed off the ST to my cousin that instantly fell in love with it as much as I did when we drove down a few states away to pick up the RS. So it's still in my life.. Do I regret it? No because I get to make someone else extremely happy. My recommendation? Buy the ST first and see if you even value these cars for what they are. The only reason I am in an RS is because I absolutely loved my ST. You accept it for it's defects because at the end of the day, it's the car that most suits you. That's it. (The chairs I've always found very comfortable though so, can't relate on that.)

Mad that in the states and other countries you’re allowed to just buy a manual transmission car without doing seperate driving test. Over here the only folk who do the automatic driving test are people who struggle to learn to drive and fail the full licence several times. Pretty much everyone drives manual to start with. You can drive an auto on a full licence but you can’t drive manual on an auto only licence.

St2 magnetic metallic owner here with snowflake wheels... If they sold magnetic metallic RS here in the states i would buy one immediately. I know a couple came here accidentally but they are crazy money. ST is the perfect daily and I haven't been able to justify upgrading it to an RS. At 5'10' , 160lbs the recaros are perfect for me. 2018 year model has carplay which is a HUGE bonus imo. Live in Minnesota and it is perfectly driveable in the winter as long as the bumper clears the snow--if there is 1ft of snow then just wait lol... Now that I have a truck again the only car I would consider selling it for would be a gt350r.. I cant think of any cars less than 70k I would rather have than my ST... it'll be tough to let it go. Not to mention it's only cost me roughly 12cents/mile to own and I bought it brand new.

I have owned both cars and I think RS is just better car in every way. But ST is still very good car and cheaper. On the other hand RS keeps value much better at least here where I live. And we have snow here 4-5 months so ST is useless on that period. RS is almost more fun car on snow than dry tarmac 😅 And the drift mode is so fun on snow 😏

Had both and while I loved my 14 ST, the RS is head and shoulders above it in all aspects. The way it goes around corners is incredible but so is the ST - however it is the way that the RS goes out of corners is enough to make you laugh out loud. Acres of power, amazing from a dig

RS Owner here. I come from 6 years behind the wheel of a Jeep wrangler… this car is a fucking rocket 😅. I’m in Colorado and I knew I wanted a 4 wheel drive high performance car. Ive gotten deep into rally racing (as a fan). I almost bought the golf r and admittedly I sometimes wish I did because the sound system and quality of life in the RS just isn’t that great (unless you’re Hooning around). I just had a blast test driving the RS and the golf R didn’t deliver that rush when going full throttle in the corners. I think I would’ve had just as much fun in the ST, but I knew the manual Gold R wasn’t even coming close to the driving experience as the RS. I love 4 wheel dr platforms for there snow capability. If I was im Arizona, I probably would’ve still gotten the RS because I’d visit some friends of mine in flagstaff. Both are incredible cars. But for me, I was trying to decide between the RS, Golf R, Evo X GSR, or the new Supra in manual. But if I was going to pay 60k or more, I’d get a used Porsche 718 Cayman S or GTS.

Funny this posted today as i have been sitting here for the last week trying to decide on the two. Break the bank and get the RS or spend 10-15k less and get the ST and add mods, sound and looks goes to the RS i also really like AWD buttt am i going to want to drive it in the winter even if i had it idk! hard choice but will prolly go with the ST because of price. Wont pretend like 35 40k is a cheap spend for me.

RS owner here, never drove an ST. Living in Canada where we get major snow storms and 5 months of Winter the RS is absolutely amazing. It's the closest one can get to a rally car for the road. The seats are definitely uncomfortable but livable as I've done 13 hour trips in it and I'm prone to a sore back. Seats are supportive but definitely not cushy, lol same with the ride. Those are about my only complaints besides the somewhat basic interior. I'm actually thinking of selling it for a Kia Stinger as I don't have all that many corners where I live and a comfy, options loaded GT car would work better for me at this time in my life.... but that said the RS is so special and with a Mountune V2X cat back exhaust it sounds absolutely amazing. The handling is fantastic in all weather, especially with winter tires and drift mode! Also looking at a BMW M340i but not sure I want to spend that much just for the straight line speed and slightly bigger back seat with the extra increase in maintenance costs... lol so many choices.

I'm an RS owner. 2017 Stealth Grey, with a bunch of bolt-ons and a tune. I drove an ST for awhile and I have to say there is NO Doubt the RS is better in every way. No regrets buying the RS. It handles better, better styling and way more power and more power to be made if you do it the right way. There are a few ST's in my neighborhood that for some reason thought they could hang with my RS on the street but they found out the hard way 😄

I have both right now, have had the st3 for a while and now only recently the RS. My ST has the 275 mountune package, in 3rd gear it's a bit quicker than my stock RS. It's an odd one, but with all that extra weight of the RS 4wd I suppose it makes sense. Overall agree with what you say from a drivers car perspective the RS is better and faster on road, and definitely has the better traction up to 50pmh, My one caveat is that I still think the ST is just as good from an all round perspective, as in a bit more comfortable, and definitely a lot less thirsty on fuel, doesn't attract thieves. This said. RS holds its value incredibly well, so overall both great options.

The RS is a great car, but at its price point there are much better cars like C6 Z06 corvettes, 5.0 mustangs, then you have cars that sre definitely competitive with it like the 370z, STI. Not alot of competition for what you can get an ST for.

My question is, is the ST okay during winter? I live in a cold climate. My money situation is im trading in a Mirage for something more fast n fun. I originally thought for a Lancer, but figured it would be more fun to have a turbo option. The evonisnt a option because of the insane pricing. So ST? Is it okay in winter? How does it perform with daily driving? Is the RS superior?

In winter the ST is fine. I have all seasons on and went through snow over my bumper just fine. Am in WI in the states. The only thing that was an issue (usual) is up hill starts in the snow. I’ll get winter tires for this 2023 season and will for sure have zero issues. 6-7” max snowfall would be the limit for the ST

I dont know. I bought a 1999 Mits 3000gt SL( FWD ~220hp) I regretted not buying the 3000gt VR4(AWD ~320hp) the entire time i owned it. The problems were torque steer(it was so bad), and no cost effective way to increase power. There was no point of trying to increase power on the SL to me because I would smoke that one sad tire off in two gears but not actually go anywhere. I realize this is 2 decades of FWD Technology but i for one will never make that mistake again. The 3000gt was also on the hefty side but even in the SL version it was sporty and fun but no comparision in fun value or handling performance of AWD. This is coming from 48 year old, fastest exp previous was 455 buick rocket swapped 2dr olds 1979. Very fast straight line, and absolutely no turning allowed hehe.

Too lazy to edit. Point is imo want a vette? buy the zo6. Cant afford it? maybe a camaro, buy a ZL1, not 3LT. maybe you want Subi wrx....Buy the STI. etc. Figure out exactly what you are looking for in a car. Find the make and model that most closely matches your criteria. Buy the most decked out model of that car. Every option. If you can't afford the absolute perfect version then take it down a notch. Dont buy a car and regret it. It sux. Also look at years and miles of course, maybe you cant swing a new XX but you can buy a used XX that matches you perfectly.

@moldyrefrigerator it was noticeable from the start. I believe the extra horsepower and the AWD sets the RS apart from the ST and honestly, in stock form, i believe the RS can punch way above it's weight class from a dig.The huge difference is the launch control I have in the RS. I didn't do any mods to my ST or my RS but I think both could be made noticeably faster with some sort of Access Port and a tune. My cousin had a ST and he put a tune on it and it was pretty awesome.
