Should you buy a GH5 in 2020? My thoughts after owning a GH5s

The bargains available on a used GH5 / GH5s is insane. Continuous AF not available but it’s still good!

As a GH5 Shooter I couldn't agree more - you nailed it Easton! You mentioned all points that make this camera such a valuable asset for run and gun filmmakers. I also recently switched from shooting in V-LOG to recording in NATURAL profile since I have problems grading the V-LOG footage especially when it comes to skintones. Last but not least I got a bit freaked out at 4:49 because it seamed like you weren't secured during those rolling shots 😱 Anyway, great video and lots of greetings from Stuttgart 😊

Continue to be impressed with the GH5 support. Panasonic continues to release incrementally improved firmware for the camera with 2.7 released this July.

Given the price dropping for the holidays, and offering 4K 10-bit, it's hard not to consider especially if you have a large assortment of MFT lens. (right now brand new, the GH5 is down to around 1200 USD)

thanks, I kind of needed to hear this, I have had the gh5 for a couple years now and been eyeballing the new sonly a7s3 but can't really afford it. I don't get paid or not much for doing video work, mostly just for my Travel show channel (not even monetized yet) I have a few issues with the GH5 as I do vlog and run and gun type work the most (auto focus yuk) Will need to keep this for a while it seems. It has done well for me.

Have you tried winding back the AF custom settings - speed and sensitivity - just slightly. I truly have had very few AF problems - only when I increased the above. all the best

@@bushguidebaz6540 I have tried a few different settings, sometimes it is good but then I see footage and crap it is out of focus, even if I think it is all good. I do a lot of self video, run and gun and stuff.

It has improved a lot over the years with constant updates from Panasonic. However it is still no match for Canon or Sony's more modern AF systems. If you don't vlog though, I think the GH5 AF is enough.

You forgot one amazing feature of the GH5 most people don't mention. 4.9K, 4:3 video up to 30 fps in 10-bit 4:2:0 at 200mbps HEVC. That is the anamorphic mode when using a regular lens. It's awesome :)

This is an awesome video on GH5 in 2020. If I don't already have one, I will quickly go out and buy myself one immediately. This camera is awesome. Currently I am pairing with a Sigma 18-35mm but am thinking if should switch to the Olympus 12-40mm for better focus and longer reach then keep a fast prime for those blurry backgrounds. What would be your take on this? I most shoot recipe videos but do enjoy the run and gunning now and then for events.

I'm not familiar with the 12-40 I'm sorry, but it sounds like the main missing feature is lens stabilisation which if you won't miss the extra range might help. It sounds like that's the main difference!

@@eastonchang I agree. Then what is your take on the 12-35mm compared to the Sigma 18-35mm in terms of usability. Do you find it more difficult to get focus because it being a focus-by-wire? Love to hear your opinion on this lens base on focusing and low light capabilities. Thanks Easton

Panasonic 12-35 2.8, it's always on my GH5. It's expensive but it's worth it. Some people also love the Sigma ART 18-35 but it's a better match for the Pocket 4k and those who want to rig it up, focus motors etc. If you want to run and gun with the GH5, the 12-35 2.8 is a better match for that type of shooting.

@@realwaybundabergmedia1662 GH5s is much better in low light, and the image quality I recall was slightly better. But you miss out on IBIS and megapixels for stills. I feel like the GH5 represents better value for money than the GH5s, which is still quite expensive, especially when you start comparing it with the Pocket 4k. It's still a great camera, I would only fork the extra money out if you really need the low light sensitivity!

How is this cage called you use for your cameras to protect/mount things on?

Hi Don, this is a smallrig cage. You can find it on eBay or amazon by searching smallrig GH5. It is to make it easier to mount a monitor or recorder to it. I can also mount a quick release plate directly onto the side or somewhere else to make it easier to balance on tripods or gimbals.

How did you kill your GH5s and how does one avoid doing that? I recently got a GH5 for a screaming good deal and it has become my prized possession. I'm frankly, a little paranoid to use it out of fear of breaking it, since I doubt I could actually buy another one.

I love my GH5 which I got after killing my GH4 while filming the waves where I live during Britain's worst storm this century. If the GH5 was so out of date for 2020, how come Panasonic have re-boxed it both figuratively and literally into their new Lumix BGH1? I refuse to pay the Panasonic V-Log tax and I'm loving HLG.

When you factor in the 12-35 lens with the GH5, would it be better to just spend a few hundred more for the S5 and get a full frame camera?

If you factor the 12-35, it is an absolutely fantastic lens. It’s small and cheap looking but it’s an absolute weapon. To compare apples with apples you would have to be also getting the big 24-70 Lumix S Pro 2.8 lens which is going to probably stretch the price gap by over another grand. Adding lenses exacerbates the price gap in my mind between the two rather than closing it. You can of course go with the kit lens with the S5 but then that’s comparing apples to oranges.

Easton Chang Good point! That’s very true. I didn’t really think of the equivalent focal range in full frame as most people would probably be getting the kit lens (20-60) which could arguably be a more useful focal range. But I definitely see where you are coming from.

You certainly can, but the resolution is a lot lower on the GH5s, and you miss out on IBIS.

Cheaper, more practical to have IBIS for me. Than low light sensitivity.

Ibis on a gimbal is optimum. I did that with my Supra commercial. But ibis without a gimbal makes nice handheld looking shots, without the gimbal look. Hope this makes sense!

@@mgr5550 Yep thats what I mean. Handheld without IBIS, or lens OIS, or a heavy shoulder rig is too uncomfortably shakey. And the gimbal gives you that "gimbal" look which isn't always sought after. @@robertburks2126 Feel free to argument yourself, not stopping you. There's tools for every situation, but saying things like "real cinematographer" doing x or not doing x is funny. DPs, Directors and so on through the years been flexible and creative, shooting with drones, action cameras, mounting red cameras on risky diy vehicles (looking at you mad max)... Anyway so reading someone saying what you did, couldn't hold myself
