@@HighPeakAutos Your comment about farmers not buying Series and 90"/110" Land Rovers after the 60s is not true in my neck of the woods (Bucks/Beds), only in the last few years have they drifted away from Land Rovers to Japanese pickups, but not all of them, some still hang on to their Land Rovers because they cope better offroad. The new Defender is aimed at a different market, not much good for chucking animal feed, dead livestock or several muddy dogs into the back except maybe the upcoming 90" Commercial which l have got my eye on.

I went to see a farmer in East Anglia once, with a 35% price increase. I said ‘I am sure your costs increase each year’. He said ‘we are selling peas for less than we were in 1950’, whilst enjoying a large, possibly Cuban, cigar. In the car park was a line of nearly new Range Rovers with expensive personalised plates 😳

@@srspower ignorance at its best. Seeing one element and always reinforcing your own belief while wearing blinkers. Farmers are consistently the highest suicide rates, all around the world. A Peugeot 206 wouldnt do the job but you're not intelligent enough to know that many farmers have £200,000+ in debt. You probably don't know what real pressure is. Comparing skiing arable farmers with 1000 acres in Eastern England is not comparable to normal farmers. As daughter of a farmer that died of suicide, you represent the scum which alienates farmers more and more with your ignorance and words. I also think that given how rounded and in my opinion non-descript the latest Discovery is, I think traditional Discovery buyers will turn to buying a Defender in a heartbeat (no pun intended with your Aidensfield section)

The new Defender is a replacement for the old Discovery. The New Discovery has now become more of a soft roader. I've been driving Land Rover and Rangerovers for over 40 years, and as much as I appreciate the old defender, the new Defender is the evolution we've been waiting for. I only hope that there will also be more commercial variants such as a pickup with double cabin. Nice review Matt!

@@lbco5229 I agree. I own an old Defender and before that I owned a D1. Now, they _are_ maintenance heavy vehicles. In that you will be attending to it (on a maintenance basis) a fair bit more often that your regular run-about car. But if you do the maintenance that you should be doing, and you look after the vehicle, then the vehicle will look after you. In almost 20 years of ownership I have been broken down _twice_ , both of those were in my D1. The first was a snapped fan belt which is 100% a maintenance issue and therefore my fault. The second was a dodgy starter, although that only took a whack with a hammer to free the solenoid and I was on my way (and after which I replaced the starter). In my Defender, with all maintenance always done, literally no issues.

Having driven one for 3 hours at the invitation of Land Rover. I agree with most things you say. I am a huge fan of the brand and I was very impressed with the new one. The rear view mirror camera does take a couple of minutes to adjust to but then it becomes the "New Normal". The air suspension really impressed my 17 year old. Like you the 90 would/will be my model of choice but the 110 has the added practicality for dogs, bikes, kids and camping gear. Old Defender owners may not wave at you but on my drive I passed another new 110 and they waved. I think Land Rover nailed it with the spare on the rear door again but maybe they should have put it on the bonnet.

Thanks for a well balanced and honest review. In a world of health and safety restrictions/regulations that protect us from ourselves, Land Rover have done a great job with the sequel to what was a motoring legend. Yes, it is modern and hi-tech with lots of electronic wizardry but no more so than the cab of a Fendt, JCB, MF, JD these days. I feel it is designed and engineered for a generation that has only seen the yellow end of a dip-stick….whilst filling the washer bottle….with latex gloves on.

I love the new Defender, and would defo have one if my budget allowed. I do think it is a really cool car. However, for some, it may be too cool. Whereas the old Defender was a basic, rudimentary 4x4, it filled a gap in the market. Whereby it was a robust car with relatively simple mechanics that a lot of owners could fix themselves with a socket set. The new Defender is possibly too sophisticated for it's own good. And will need to be towed to the nearest dealership if it goes wrong, possibly leaving the owner without a car. And if you live in the outer Hebrides, or some other remote area, your trusty old Defender is your lifeline, your link to civilisation. I have no doubts it will sell, but it will now be bought by a different demographic, and will probably become just another "Chelsea tractor" And in the process of trying to drag the car kicking and screaming into the 21st century, I fear that Land Rover have reopened that gap in the market, which almost exclusively belonged to them and their country set customers, who need a basic, uncomplicated, no holds barred 4x4, that you would not be scared of reversing into a tree, or ploughing into a ditch. The traditional Defender owner probably just wants a relatively cheap 4x4, with a speedo and temperature gauge on the dash, and chunky heater controls. Can you imagine a farmer for example, negotiating a touchscreen with muddy or gloved hands to engage low range gears? That is the demographic the original Defender was designed for. And Sadly, this new Defender just won't cut the mustard with the game keepers, estate managers, farmers, engineers, construction workers, or even the armed forces, I think. They probably will look for something else now, which is sad. Because like red phone boxes, it will be just another little piece of Britain that will eventually disappear from view.

Spot on, I can afford a new defender, but I don’t want one, a very nice car, to nice for what I need. Can’t see me dragging a dead bullock up the paddock in it, throwing a bunch of star pickets in the back, bashing through small scrub with it. So I bought a Isuzu d-max, I will look at grenadier next year and kick the tyres so to speak to see if it adds up, have my doubts though, but maybe.

Surely the straight six Diesel engine slowly being rolled out across many JLR models is an Ingenium engine made like all others in their Wolverhampton engine plant. There have been photos online of a supposedly V8 engined Defender being tested possibly a BMW unit as BMW are moving production of their V8 and V12 engines from Germany to Hams Hall in U.K. where they already make BMW’s 4 pot petrol engines.

As for the V8, they have just moved the diesel machine tools from Ford’s factory to their own. No idea what’s happening with V8 petrol engines. I suspect that the V8 petrol engines will end to be replaced by high power Ingenium 3.0 six cylinder units. They may need a V8 for the American market in the medium term though so if BMW are shifting production to the UK [why would they do that?] then they might as well continue to use it.

You don't get it. It's not jealousy (well maybe the BMW/Merc/Audi crowd), it's something else. It's just not authentic, it's fake, just like their owners, 2 litre ingenium sums it up on 23" wheels with trade wraps. A good truck it may be in its own right, and I agree, I wish JLR well. Maybe it's a new world.

Yes, much better to spend the weekend welding and covered in grease. The old defender has no ECUs and is less likely to get you there. I also like the idea when I look out the window in the morning that the car will still be there. In the time it took to write this there is a new hole in a defender chassis.
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 3 жыл бұрын
In this case they are using poetic license in defining ‘ECU’. It on;y has a small number of what we usually call the electronic brain, or control units, or computers. The others are just CAN-BUS terminals that receive and send data from their individually coded selves, that control individual components/actuators through a common ring main, which is the ‘bus’. This type of wiring is fairly universal on cars these days and saves a massive amount of wiring. It is unfortunate that LR’s publicity machine chose to highlight something that is common to a myriad vehicles as if it was something special, particularly as the majority of customers inevitably look upon it as a negative because they don’t understand what it actually means or the advantages it allows, such as multi-mode switches or duplicate instrument data readouts and a whole lot of things we are already raking for granted in 21st C vehicles.
