I don’t find most other reviews to be dishonest. Analogue is a very tiny company of like 5 employees, hardly big enough to be able to afford to “pay off”every site that reviewed it. Digital Foundry is very well respected as well as My Life in Gaming, they both put the system through its paces & even helped identify bugs before & after its release.

I want to know if he was paid for this review and if not, did they know he had a large social media following when they so generously sent the replacement MB. Also, I would have wanted a brand new system and not have to take the thing apart and swap the MB.

NOTE: At the time of releasing this video Analogue have released a 4.3 firmware update that addresses my 2 issues with Color Palette and Uni-racers. I made a quick edit to show the color palette in 4.3 at 9:54. Very pleased that Analogue are listening to their customers !

It's worth mentioning that the PAL version of Earthworm Jim 2 had sound issues with the first firmware. It sounded like a bad emulator. But I reached out to Kevtris at Analog (during a livestream no less) and within 2 days he had fixed it in update 4.1 (which you can see in the version notes) :D
@johneygd6 жыл бұрын
Now if analogue nt will also come with a mixed mono sound update, you can experience snes games the way you heard them for the first time on old crt tv’s via coaxial cable,in mono .
@SeanOfEarth6 жыл бұрын
Uni-racers does a very odd thing to render its split screen mode. It moves the location of the sprites mid frame. The behaviour depends on information left in some registers by a previous execution. I suppose it's not really a suprise this sort of undocumented use of the original hardware would cause a problem!

I noticed the colour issue on other videos and was bothered by the lack of mention. Patently awaited your review as I knew you would address it (and review the console for that matter) if it wasn't a recording issue.
@alextirrellRI6 жыл бұрын
In some other videos, I expected "Well, the color is different because..." as I have noticed color variances in comparisons of RF, Composite, (Component Retrovision/Genesis) and RGB. Glad it's addressed. It looks much closer (though very slightly different) now. I'm really impressed at how quickly they are fixing bugs with the system and the games.
@MarcTBG6 жыл бұрын
Alex Tirrell Ditto, to your first statement. I assumed they would explain it in some way, I assumed they (the other reviewers) were informed it would be patch by the company and decided to omit the information expecting an upcoming patch. However, MVG did the proper thing by informing potential consumers first and then informing them of a patch when it came. In regards to the update: I doubt it was a fast a response as it may seem, I honestly believe it was a known issue (hence them likely reassuring the other reviewers and requesting an omission pending the planned patch).

I've had my Super NT for close to a year now, and I absolutely love it. The Super NT is without a doubt the best Super Nintendo clone system ever made, with it's perfectly accurate emulation and very wide compatibility. The upgradable firmware is awesome as well, since it can fix any problem with the system. My only real complaint is that cartridge slot is still quite temperamental, as it can often take a few tries to get a cartridge to work. In fact it seems like sometimes I have to pull up on the cartridge slightly to get it to play.

@inlovewithi6 жыл бұрын
What I've been wanting to know about the shipping is the full $40 goes to the shipping company. Because that's way too much money going to a middleman. Analogue would not be making a profit for such an insane amount.
@denniss49516 жыл бұрын
It cost me about $23 shipping.
@ocha-time6 жыл бұрын
Pretty substantial part of the overall cost, honestly... Just paid $40 (Domestic UPS ground shipping!) out of $190. That's over a fifth, and I know for a fact if they've got a UPS account shipping in the US wouldn't go over $16 for residential delivery, and mine's going to a business which is even less, probably closer to $9/12. Something tells me they aren't paying one guy close to $30 to box up one of these per hour.

Awesome review on this, happy to see the updates are being pushed out regularly and are directly fixing bugs that users are addressing! For Super Nintendo consoles this seems to be the new modern recommendation as getting this in the long run seems to be cheaper than a 1-CHIP SNES and getting everything all fitted up for RGB SCART to HDMI. If you're wanting to play a ton of systems with RGB SCART then getting modified consoles and an upscaler would still be a good solution, but if you mostly or only care about SNES then this seems to be the way to go.
@ModernVintageGamer6 жыл бұрын
for sure, the cost of a 1-Chip, OSSC or Framemeister and scart/rgb makes this a much easier choice for many, but of course you dont get the option to connect it up to a CRT - athough im hearing Analogue is coming out with an adapter for that !

Personally, the SupaRetronHD does the job for me, it's good enough™, and I spent about the same as what you spent on the controller alone. Given that the original source was composite or coaxial, and NTSC (Never Twice the Same Color) in the US, it's hard to complain about image or palette differences. None will come close to any memory of the system. Even in the age of HDMI and digital displays, there are differing levels of quality and reproduction. At the end of the day, does Analogue Super Nt make Earthworm Jim any funner to play? Again personally, the biggest improvement in these new consoles has been the ease of connecting and disconnecting them. I now have one shared HDMI and micro USB cable, and all I have to do is connect those cables and unwind the controller cable. This is a lot better than unwinding a power supply, unwinding and connecting a composite cable, and unwinding the controller cable. The time it takes to connect a composite cable is longer than connecting the micro USB and HDMI.

I wonder if they're going the Disney Vault route and rerelease them periodically. One would hope they'd improve on subsequent release. Clearly the Analogue way is the way to do it right. I wouldn't mind new reproduction carts on the market too, but I can see how the Nintendo mini's are basically just a holiday special. Maybe they'll do the N64 next and cycle back to the NES?
@KuraIthys6 жыл бұрын
What, precisely is proprietary about the controllers? I mean, aside from the obvious, since SNES controllers are by definition also proprietary. The SNES classic controllers are in fact the closest thing Nintendo has had to a consistent wired controller standard, pretty much ever. They are, whether you realise it or not, Wii Classic controllers. (They'll work as such if hooked up to a Wii or Wii U) That's the same controller standard, with the same connector type, and full inter-operability with every system that uses that connector type, since 2006 Works in reverse too. A Wii classic controller will connect just fine to a SNES mini. (or NES mini for that matter) - the home button even works, and does pretty much what you think it does. These are in fact one of the most standardised controller types Nintendo has ever made, and it's only their decision to finally switch to USB that says otherwise. For that matter, connector aside, Wii extension controllers such as this communicate using I^2C, an industry standard protocol, which has proved exceptionally useful for hackers. SNES connectors are no less proprietary. And it should be obvious that the system would have had to have been much larger to support connectors that size. Or are you complaining they're not USB controllers? Or wireless? The cheap emulation box part I agree with. But the controllers? The controllers are perfect, for what they are. They match the look and feel of SNES controllers near flawlessly, And they are interoperable with 4 different Nintendo systems. (and also in reverse. Any Wii classic type controller is compatible with the SNES mini. ) I see no need to complain about that.

I think for the time being I'll probably stick to an original and my framemeister/CRT but down the road I can see myself picking one up. I'm interested to see what their analogue out solution will be like.

Great review! I'm having such a hard time with this decision I'm not a huge collector and my Retron 5 has done a great job for me in most cases but this just looks so awesome. I might cave eventually, I actually already have the wireless controllers ( I have 3 controllers and 2 receivers, they work great on the Retron 5 and I keep the third in my work bag with my chrome book and use it via Bluetooth for some emulator action while traveling)

Never been into emulators. Give me the originals any day. In saying that, I do like how it modernises the systems to use on flatscreens.

The color "issue" is due to the it not being CRT and neither a NTSC signal (dont know about pal), on an emulator it has the same colors unless an NTSC filter is used, the black level and color saturation are different than on an LCD panel.

The final fantasy theme still sounds a little brighter on original hardware, but still an awesome piece of engineering. 👍🏻

I liked the review. I was wondering about the wieght, I didn't want it to feel light and cheap like most clones. Also nice to see the quality ( even though you had to replace it) of the motherboard as well. Thanks showing the quality of the unit. My ask is this, when the Sega version comes out, please do another in depth review of it. Thanks.

"In comparison, an original system comes in at 1 pound 16 ounces..." Must be some Imperial system rounding error translation in AU...

I wish I had the money to drop on a high quality hardware clone and a bunch of carts. I've just really wanted to play snes games recently but couldn't really afford a good emulator or clone. But I just hacked my vita and the snes emulation on it is phenomenal really. I've been playing earthbound and it sounds and looks like any footage of the official game. I haven't experienced any gameplay slowdown in Kirby super star either. Since I wasn't old enough to even ever have a snes I'm really happy to start my experience here!

It may just be the capture method, but the FFII Crystal Theme sounded just a little brighter on the original hardware, but I don't think I'd have ever noticed it if it weren't back-to-back.

I didn't know the PAL version kept the name Super Aleste. That's a great game! One of my favorite shmups!

I am a dedicated collector and player of original hardware and software but, I could definitely see getting one of these as well as an everdrive for the systems I have. Hopefully, the Analogue legacy of consoles will continue so we can have decent hardware replacements when the custom chips inside our beloved consoles start dying.

The NT was on my list of big purchases until I saw the 30th anniversary release of Megaman X, i bought that on a whim and it set me back. I hate seeing a video like this after that purchase only bc i want one even more now. I love how even when things went wrong they were willing to fix it and fast! That is a great sign! Companies that listen to and respect their customers are always the best. Thanks for making the video, it had great insight, and I also loved that you corrected yourself on color pallet issue. You could have easily left you video as it was and you still added the fix they made. Great work all around ;)

I am interested in one, but the price is still pretty steep. I mean OK its a perfect solution for someone wanting to capture super nintendo gameplay on HDMI but I can't help but prefer the RGB output of an original. That and the fact I just built a giant piece of furniture to accomodate a 27" Sony PVM with 12 consoles on RGB-SCART. Was planning on getting a framemeister but still on a DVD-recorder right now (I know framerate...). Was planning to get one as soon as the laser died(should be soon). And to get rid of the hassle of ripping the dvd"s.

Pre-ordered one of these last year, I have been very impressed so far. As for the controller by 8bitdo, they are decent but I do notice the extra lag and the d-pad isn't as good as the original SNES pad so I went back to that. EDIT: To clarify on the dpad - when pressing down it sometimes thinks you are pressing to a side, it's difficult to explain.

I recently got a raspberry pie and configured it with retro pie and I have been very pleased with. Some small issues here and there but for the sixty dollars I put out and the ability to pretty much emulate anything I want, I think it’s a great deal. This looks nice, but for 190, that seems a little price. Maybe 120 tops for me, especially since I pretty much have all the options this thing has at a fraction of the price, at the fraction of the size.
