At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.

God, I love how this car looks. There's no bad angle anywhere on it. It makes me just want to get in and drive it just to drive it. It sucks these were never sold in the US. Also, I love the shade you're throwing at people who just idiotically modify these.

I used to own one, they are good cars. As reliable as any other Honda too & you're right the U.S should have got this model. The U.S. had a problem with the K20 series Engines. They had no problem with the K24s though.. I think it was the high rev limits on the K20 they didn't like. But then again you guys get the 6MT 3.5L Honda Accord Coupe and that's not available in the UK.. So I guess It's swings and roundabouts.. (as they say.) Those 6MTs look like great cars too.

Currently own one of these as a daily driver and absolutely love its practical nature. Have some very modest modifications and it absolutely wakes the car up, for those who say the car is lacking in power or low down performance, a header, catback and intake with a tune will give it alot more mumbo to the tune of 145kw at the tyres, up 25kw from the factory 120kw at the tyres (not to be confused with 147kw at the crank). With the tune the rev limit will be extended to 8500rpm from the factory 8000rpm and the vtec engagement point will be lowered from the factory 5900rpm to 4000rpm which in turn gives it alot more usable power through out the rev range. I drive the car through heavy stop go traffic to and from work on a daily basis and the 50L tank gets me 450km when the reserve light comes on and that's driving with a heavy right foot. As far as infotainment goes, fitting a touch screen is quite simple and many fn2 specific wreckers are selling them for $200 which is a steal considering they're $1000 brand new. Considering what these cars can be bought for, mine is an 07, they can be anywhere from 10-15k and I don't think anything comes close to it in terms of bang for buck. I'm on 190,000kms as of now and the car shows no signs of slowing down, great little car for anyone looking to buy one.
@thandomthembu4913
@thandomthembu4913 2 ай бұрын
That sounds motivating as I am interested in buying one as my first car. Does the tune not have a bad effect on the engine in the long run? I am looking to buy one with no more than 170000 kms for a reasonable price to keep for a very long time.

@thandomthembu4913 hey man. So I bought mine with 170000kms, it's now on 210000kms. What can I say, its been a great 40000kms over the last 2 years. I travel quite abit for work. When the car hit 190000kms I needed new shocks and clutch as the standard ones were flogged, so I upgraded to coilovers which most of us will do anyway. At 200000kms the bushings gave out, replaced with nolathane bushes (some people will upgrade to these anyway) and just recently did upper pulley and alternator at 210000kms. All in all, you'll have trouble free driving up till 200000kms and the rest is just abit of care and love. I flog the car most times hitting redline, track days, hill runs you name it and it comes back for more. The engines are stout you can count on that. Just do regular servicing, good synthetic oil, top it up as needed, will burn abit from time to time with very hard driving, be kind and let it warm up before a flogging and she will look after you.

Thank you very much for the info. I have already saved up money for it. Just waiting to find a clean example now. The tune (hondata or any other one) won't affect the car negatively? If you drive normally, what consumption should one expect in the city and highway?
@SR22VET-S15
@SR22VET-S15 2 ай бұрын
@thandomthembu4913 a tune will improve your driving experience. Be aware that most tuners will tune the car on pump 98 (if you're in aus) so expect to pay more for the fuel. You'll make more power in the mid range where it needs it and brings the car to life, you won't have to wait till 5900rpm to get the car really moving as vtec engagement will be lowered to 4000rpm. Expect to see around 450kms to a 50L tank with a heavy foot in city traffic and 500km plus on highway driving. I'd say a fair exchange of approx 10-12L per 100kms (better mileage if you don't hit vtec of course)

In the UK, the Mugen Champion White FN2 is available for purchase, typically priced between £11,000 and £14,000 for models that are in excellent condition and have low mileage. This particular car is expected to increase in value in the future, particularly those with low mileage, potentially becoming a sought-after collectible. Amazing cars

Great video! I really looked into getting that type R before finally getting my Kia Proceed. As mentioned in the video, these Type Rs were undervalued before covid. The problem is that Honda is too old / too high kays, hard to find unmolested examples, and have to rev the balls off it to overtake. Proceed has 80% peak torque from 1500rpm, which is all the difference in a daily driver. I had an EK civic SOHC 5MT before, and that's the only thing I didn't like about it, no torque, so in daily drive you're at mercy of traffic. Proceed feels like a V6 torque wise compared to it. Still love the look and engine note of that Type R though Ps Adam, still have the STI if you want to review it, mileage is still low 😆

I really enjoyed this review, but just to be clear: The FN2 has a torsion beam, and not a torsion bar rear axle like a Peugeot 205, megane RS etc. - huge difference! It's a cost cutting measure, and unlike a torsion bar rear suspension, the wheels aren't suspended independent. I really want a Space ship civic non the less :)

I’ve had my 2010 R Car for 6 years and still love it. Planned on it becoming a future classic along with my old 1977 Holden. You never know it’s true fun factor until you take it somewhere like Kangaroo Valley NSW and keep it in the Vtec zone where it’s at its happiest. The only negatives I can say is a firm ride (which I’m now used to) and the digital radio display soldering issues which I am yet to repair. A true drivers car like the MX5 but not for everyone.

The FN2 is a great car , i got one as daily since a few years now ( 160 000 km ) and i love it But i had to modify it, i bought all the parts and asked a experienced mechanic to install them. But i kept all the stock parts. I change the oil every 7000 - 8000 km -The stock brakes were a bit weak in my opinion so i bought a BBk yellowspeed racing 6 pots calipers for the front and some stoptech discs and ferodo performance pads for the rear. the BBk wasn't really worth the price -An invidia catback exhaust for the sound and it's great - Some KW v1 coilovers, stainless steel so no corrosion and they are amazing on the twisty roads here. - Oz racing wheels 18" with some michelin PS4 for summer and the stocks wheels for winter - Full powerflex kit ( just an amazing mod ) - a double din inside , i did not like the stock radio - and a mugen wing for the exterior wich is the only mod i wanted to comlplete the look of the car - New clutch is coming soon with a light flywheel exedy stage 1 - engine is stock and will stay as it is , i need this car to go to work so i take care of it ( and i never reached the rev limiter ) i really love this car, every time i open the garage door i smile looking at it. just buy one if you can, it is reallyu worth it.

Great video, and a great car - I think it's unfairly derided as not living up to the predecessors. While it may be true the EK / DC2 Integra were some legendary cars, and the EP & DC5 in their own right, there's nothing wrong with this being a bit softer - they're still very special compared to 95% of other appliances on the road, and more usable every day than the earlier models. Great stuff, although personally having driven both I would probably pick a Megane 3 RS if I was buying a car in this class.

Had mine for a year, absolutely love it. I bought it to get something fun but still reliable after very unreliable old bmw ownership, and it’s not missed a beat. A map lowering vtec to 4K makes the power much more usable and wakes the car up a bit! The seats are high cos they’re right above the fuel tank which I believe was to improve storage in the boot and so the back seats can fold right down, so you can’t really lower it any further. But the steering, gear changes and pedal set up are so nice that it still feels really sporty. I think it gets a lot more criticism than it deserves, and usually only from people who haven’t driven one (me included before I drove one). It’s a great car and the last of the screaming NA type Rs. Edit: mine is a 2011 LSD model, so the cornering is amazing, really pulls you in, so I can’t speak for non LSD models. I can imagine no LSD would be more understeer prone.

No mention of water leaks? If you're looking to buy one, have a look in the "hidden" compartment under the boot floor. If nobody's already fixed it, it WILL be wet in there. It's not "difficult" to fix but it's a pretty big job because there's a lot of potential sources for leaks and you need to remove a lot of trim to get to the places that leak. Fortunately, because it's such a common problem, there's a heap of video's on YT explaining what to look for and how to fix it.

Check the oil as often as you check your balls, service it regularly, I promise it will last forever.

I do like these but they feel a little heavy and detached from the driving experience therefore the lack of torque is very apparent and they feel slower than they are. The EP3 Tyoe R is far superior in performance and handling. The FN2 easier to live with

I was looking for one of these and drove a few of them. But ended up with a 2015 Ford Fiesta ST that had half of the KMs most of the fn2r's for similar prices had and it was a 1 owner car.

I've seen a number of EP3's that have gone off road. The car has great handling but can very easily catch you out, fun to drive though. I found the FN2 suspension to be less harsh than the EP3 on poor roads

I've owned both ep3r and fn2r, the ep3r had liftoff oversteer characteristics and bad steering geometry which led to alot of torque steer, where as the fn2 tracks straight while accelerating and a more stable rear end when coming off throttle.

I owned one in the United States for about a year and a half. It was perfect reliability wise but the lack of torque and the constant shifting got to be annoying in stop and go inter city traffic. The final straw was a cross country trip with the engine spinning along at 4, 000 to 4,500 RPM trying to keep pace with interstate traffic. It got tiring pretty quickly.

@@tigoid I work for family owned component manufacturer and yes you can own so called "FORBIDDEN FRUIT" in the United States as long as it is for "RESEARCH" purposes and the vehicle can't be resold. If you are registered with the government as a exporter and can prove that components that you manufacture are installed on a vehicle you can import one It either has to be re-exported or crashed after a certain amount of time. @@tigoid You can.register them and you them drive them on the road easily. The only thing you have to make sure of is the registration clearly states "TESTING PURPOSES".and that you have valid insurance. Almost every vehicle and component manufacturer has testing facilities in North America and vehicles not available in the United States are driven on public roads for testing purposes all the time.

I test drove one of these at a dealership when I was in the market for a fun little weekender. I'd have probably bought it if I didn't end up finding the Dc5 Integra Type S that now lives under my car port. If I was looking for a car I had to daily drive, I definitely would have bought the fn2 though. The fn2 feels more like a K swapped Golf GTI when you compare it to a DC5 or even its direct predecessor, the EP3. That's not exactly a bad thing, but people aren't buying a Type R to have all these extra features that just add weight and ultimately diminish the raw driving experience they became renown for.

Ironically the so called worst Type R is still actually a VERY Good Car. It's not quite as nimble in stock form as the EP3 but comparing them for day to day (non track use) the FN2 starts to look a little better and budget friendly.

Yep, many reviews actually praise this car to be practical hot hatch to daily. EP3 is great as a track car, but not really as refined and thats okay. Even FN2 still have potential for mods anyways if anybody wants it to be a track car.

Civic over proceed gt. Not that the proceed gt is a bad car but they are really rare and getting parts for them is going to be harder. Plus the type r would be more enjoyable in a twisty country road due to the front differential. And honesty the nostalgia factor and love of VTEC helps the civic win.

Just sold mine, Alot of car for the money, however as a daily the ride is just horrendous coupled with the noise in 6th gear cruising, it's just ridiculous. Went for a z4 e89 after and it's alot nicer place to be despite being a "sports car". The civic is a fun b road basher though if that's what you're after.

Very underestimated car. Such a lovely daily driver that gets your blood pumping on the occasional vtec pull. I'd take the fn2 over the kia, because the honda will only go up in value and will give you less issues. And also..any company can make a turbo car. But not many have succeeded in making this much power NA.

I sold drugs in one of these. My mate owned it and I borrowed it sometimes. Sounds great, shifts great, handles great, looks weird. Like driving a HotWheels car as an adult. Super comfortable seats, super low though and being 6'4" this car was annoying to get into. Max seat adjust to the rear. Fuel efficient. Feels like driving a go cart 24/7. pros and cons to this. Pro: mad Con: not ideal for when you need to drive sensibly but your car keeps asking you to flog it a little bit

I'm on my 4th type r, I've had an ep3 fn2 and I'm on my 2nd fk2 now(don't ask) and I don't think the fn2 deserves the reputation it gets, its like 5% better to drive than a fn2 but the fn2 is leagues above as a daily. I'm sure I'm going to get abuse but I did in the region of 80k miles in each so u think its a pretty valid comment. Although the new turbo ones from a performance standpoint are double figure levels above in all respects, bar the sound
