I almost sold my Kemper, realized (just as you pointed out) that I had a lot invested in the ECO system with Third-Party profiles and decided to Keep it. Since Keeping it, I have revisited the device and fell back in Love with so many profiles that caused me to purchase it in the first place. Doesn't matter to me how old it is, still brings me hours of enjoyment and on any given day when setup properly can sound just as good as anything on the market.

I’ve spent thousands of dollars on pedals and effects. But when I sit down to play, I just want to hear the sound of my guitar with a clean tone pushed to break up through a mic’d up Fender tube amp. Kinda funny how I spent all that time and money, just to end up right back where I started. 🤔 The thing that changed is how much better my playing is. Not all who wander are lost…

Idk what kind of unique effects he's using, but if it's pretty standard you could make a really versatile and small rig (way less than 60 lbs!!) with a ToneX One and an HX Stomp. These two pedals really compliment each other.

I’ve created an almost perfect fly rig with the Tonex into the HX Stomp. Maybe a choice drive and comp pedal. Fits in my carryon with a change of clothes. I’ve owned a Kemper rack since the beginning and invested tons of money into profiles…

I picked up the Tonex One and immediately found the Amalgam Two Rock capture to be perfect for our band's music. I put the One in the loop of my HX Stomp on a mini board plus a couple of other pedals and done. This is my new backup rig to my Fractal FM9. The sound quality from that little Tonex One pedal with the right capture is kinda mind blowing. It just sounds right with no effort or tweaking. FWIW, I used to have a Kemper+Floorboard. While it was nice, it didn't blow me away. I find the Fractal actually easier for me to use and it gets better tones.

The TONEX captures of the Two Rock amps are awesome! Also check out the Amp Nation amps go find the Dumble if you like these beautiful chimey tones. Their distorted gain tones are also beautifully done. And most of the ones I found were free in Tonex by people posting them free. The Two Rock there are only a few out right now, but plenty enough for cleans, OD, and high gain patches.

I went down the modeling rathole when the Vox Tonelab tabletop was released, been through Axe-FX Ultra, Helix, various Boss GT, etc. the only hardware modeling I have now is my HX-FX + Catalyst 100 in 4CM, and a Mooer Prime S1. I've also been on a tube amp buying spree the last few years, and have a custom AC-100 clone being built now... I built a computer rig for guitar because of PolyChrome DSP McRoklin Suite - it's that good. I have a other plugins as well, a few Neural Archetypes, Mesa, Softube Marshall Amp Room, Helix Native, Blue Cat Audio Axiom,... but PolyChrome DSP is at least 90% of my patches. The computer rig works flawlessly; I have a dedicated Audio Interface, a handheld USB-C touchscreen, and small wireless keyboard/trackpad; I use Blue Cat Audio's PatchWork to organize my patches, and even out patches from different plugins; I use Keith McMillen SoftStep2 for MIDI control of everything, and have several different MIDI maps with different PatchWork patches, that I can easily load into the SoftStep2...and the SS2 has an expression pedal input which I also use... Next, I'm going to build a 2U-3U rack with sliding shelf to house all of these components for the computer rig. TL;DR; computer plugins and other tools for guitar have arrived to compete with hardware digital modelers. I can upgrade any of the components, and just keep refreshing different components going forward for a lot less than changing hardware, and I can try and add various plugins which are also less expensive than hardware.

I’ve been blessed to own several VERY expensive Dumble-style amps. Ever the purist, I’ve not really bought into the IR, profile, digital model stuff. The Tonex One was my first foray into that realm. The Dumble pack + Fender FR12 gives me everything that I loved in my old Two Rocks or Quinnamps, but in a convenient, portable, affordable package. Sounds like most of the players here in Nashville have gone digital anyway. ✌🏼

I have been going after certain ones in Tonex that I have found. Search for these: Most of these are free beside the Two Rock are only a few free ones right now, but awesome! Two Rock Matchless Dumble Amp Nation Ruby Jair Friedman Marshalls JMP's are actually really good! I have to say, I have had my TONEX now for about 2 months and damn this thing is really growing and the captures are getting much better! I was disappointed with the clean being so low in volume and dull at first. Now, they are sounding GREAT! I never had a Kemper, really didn;t like it much when I played on a friends years back. It was just missing something to me. IDK, maybe it was just me being so picky. But damn the TONEX I have to say it rockin! Plenty of free stuff now to go on for years.

I switched from using a Kemper to dual ToneX rig last year and it was a great decision (for what I do). The Kemper is great, but taking a head, Kemper footswitch, my pedalboard and a speaker to gigs ended up being way more hassle for me. Now I have everything I need on one board and it’s a stereo rig that I can get about on the tube / trains etc. It sounds killer too once it’s all dialled in.

As a solution some people are already doing captures of captures. i.e. I am capturing Axe fx Iii J45 and Revv captures. Also using Tonex into Katana looks really good. So if you have favourites in the studio on Axe you can get really close for live use 😅😅 what do you think?

Honestly my question to the guy would be ... what's going on with the rest of the rig that it needs to be so large? I have a 12x12 rig based on an HX Stomp, Source Audio Collider, and MIDI controller that is enough for gigging. It's my "lazy" rig. If I were him, a ToneX or Kemper Player in the loop of a Line 6 device would be a great combo.

Hi Jon. I love my Kemper. ToneX sounds amazing, but I can gig with just my Toaster, remote, and an expression pedal (might switch to Kemper Stage at some point). I'd need a lot more gear alongside the ToneX to get the flexibility I have with Kemper. It's not a route I'm going to take. And my Favourite Nicolas Cage films are 8mm, Windtalkers , and Guarding Tess 😁

In blind tests I much prefer Tonex, however.. there's been plenty of guitarists over the years that I thought had great tone.. and then found out they were using Kemper. The form factor is also better. I just think Tonex sounds better. QC and Tonex are my top choices for captures, but it depends on what your priorities are. Tonex has downsides as well. This video is good at going in depth for all of the pros and cons.. it's a good point that if you've already committed to Kemper, you're better off staying with it.

The kemper sound good, his effects are top notch, but there is some "openess" with ToneX that i won't find with the Kemper, whose tone is "compressed". I have not used my Kemper for some months. But you can still do good music with the Kemper, and no actual modeler will make you sound bad today. The Kemper player is too expensive and too limited for my taste. If i just wanted the pure amp tone and use outboard effects, i would rather use a (or two ?) ToneX one or pedal.

I don't think the time to create Tonex models will hold it back, at least relative to the Kemper. The Kemper Player does not make captures, so we're talking about the big expensive model for comparison. Most of the people who use the big Kemper have had it for a long time and already have their captures in there. They are not saving time by being able to capture quickly. When you get Tonex, you can either use the billions (ok, I exaggerate) of existing captures, or you may want to model your own amps. If you have amps you want to model, you just have to take the time and do it right up front - once. If you get good captures, you have them to use going forward. I don't think most Tonex users are constantly needing to run captures as part of their workflow. The portability of Tonex, together with sound quality, community support, and price, makes it pretty compelling. It's bigger competition will come from things like NAM and the new NAM Player (once the price comes down on that).

Except the dude that asked the question already plays 2-4 gigs a week and is getting more travel work, so he’s probably pretty good to begin with dude. Some people, myself included, love to constantly mess with gear while becoming better players because it’s inspiring and fun for us. Paul Gilbert, alongside SEVERAL other guitar legends, constantly mess with their setup as well… kinda sick of people going “sTOp bUyInG geaR JuST PlaY” when we are literally already doing that and making significant money doing it.

Danhines is partially correct. Yes, 85% of your tone is in the way you physically interact with the instrument. But my gt1000 core for effect + my tonex for amp/cab sounds far superior than just the gt1000 core by itself. Cordy can probably make a nylon string, toy guitar for toddlers sound passable…I guarantee he will have an easier time with one of his k-lines though. To your point, gear isn’t everything, but let’s not pretend it isn’t worth trying new things to see if something gels with you or your setup better. That type of thinking is just silly.

Sounds like a crayon that can’t carry a Kemper. I used to lug a Marshall stack around. Now there’s an argument for lighter. I’ll stick with the original, which continues to improve and upgrade on a regular basis, and is still the best all round option with profiling capability. The rest are weak copies. Whether one uses a plugin, or connects an external device for your guitar tone, is no difference, unless one is that lazy. You use the Stomp and Native. No difference in tone.

This guy needs the kemper player. Perfect for guys who love pedalboards and used to run 4cm with the toaster. I would also say that while I know there's "scientific" tests showing that tonex supposedly gets closer to the real amp than kemper, that has not been my experience. I'm much happier with the kemper profiles of my amsp than tonex. Just my two cents.
