Really helpful and I don’t think I’d have figured that out on my own (though when you said look at the default settings that seemed obvious in retrospect). Thanks for the guidance; much appreciated.

Helix is not exactly like an amp so I dial things in by ear and not like a real Princeton would be set

Great video, Jonny lad! A couple of years ago, I was trying to get a Quad Cortex, but it was not all that available (early production less than demand), so I decided to go with the Helix. I’ve been super happy with it. Some of my satisfaction comes from ideas that you’ve supplied with your videos. Btw: unrelated, but you seem to prefer KeyLine to Fender. True? If so, why?

Someone at Line6 told me on reddit that the default settings were dialed in to what they felt sounded good, regardless of what parameters are real or not. If there is no Mid on the real amp, then the real amp's tone stack is achieved with Mids at 5. Even if their default is not at 5. Presence at 0. Master volume at 10. Or in the case of a Fender Champ "Small Tweed" model, which only has a volume and was the specific amp I was asking about - Bass and Treble at 5 as well.

FWIW, the Champ preset doesn’t sound at all like a tweed Champ

The Sag setting was the missing ingredient in getting the tones I wanted. It affects the dynamics of the amp model in regard to lighter vs heavier picking. I felt much more connected to the amp if that makes sense when I set it the way I wanted. Every other setting outside of the Tone stack and Sag I leave pretty much default. Sag definitely is more for the player than the audience but it makes such a huge difference in matching your pick attack.

IME it's better to not get too hung up on the real-world amp settings for the Helix. For example, general advice for the Soldano SLO amp is that you have to get the master volume up to about 6 for it to 'open up'. (Pete Thorn made mention of this in a Rhett Shull video on how pros dial in amps and I've heard it in numerous forums as well.) However, this setting in the Helix is flubby and rolls off the top end air/presence. I've found that it pays to experiment with running the Master volume control lower, especially on gainy amps - it can sometimes add more air and presence back into the tone that might otherwise get rolled off if the Master is set too high. To add to this, sometimes I actually end up finding sonically-adjacent amp models more satisfying for particular tones than what I would have expected. For classic plexi crunch tones, I found that the Brit P75 Brt (Park 75) to be the best for me; the Brit Plexi models sounded relatively honky in the midrange to me. It might not technically be a Marshall 1959 SLP, but it does that job for me better than the actual model. Long story short, use your ears and don't get too hung up on the knobs and names.

I noticed that ch. Volume too can change something of the tone especially if we put an od or a distortion block First than the amp. The only thing doesn t affect the tone Is the very last block of the chain

Hi John, in the example at the end you apply a Hi Cut of 8kHz on the cab. I’ve seen on other tutorials a recommendation to do this on the global EQ. Would you also have the global EQ cut or do you cut on each individual cab as required?

I think on Fender amps (vintage style) with no mid knob the mids are pre-set at a fixed place internally. I would assume that the value of 6.8 matches where it is set with an internal resistor instead of an adjustable pot.

Hi Jon. No shade, but I'm just curious as to why you're using a separate 4x12 cab instead of the stock cab that comes with the amp/cab combination for this demonstration? Surely that would no longer be "authentic"... I've been a Helix LT user from day one, and yours and Jason Sadites' channels have given me the bestest information. Keep up the good work 🙂

Do you have any plans to revisit the Fender Tone Master Pro...I'm sure you must have noticed how much some of the nay-sayers have revised their opinions about it since the last few Firmware updates Fender has provided...Just wondering, since you are one of the most thorough modeller channels on KZfaq. (full disclosure: I really love your style and approach, and am a TMP owner and would love to see what you could do with it...)

Channel volume definitely changes your tone on higher gain amps (than Fender amps), but sure...for non master volume Fender amps, that is mostly true.
@Jeeeeeeeez

Channel volume for all amps just takes whatever you have and raises it or lowers it. It’s flat response. It’s not adding or taking away any frequencies, what’s most likely happening is just your ear picking up different things at different volumes. But if you were to look at the frequencies on a graph the channel volume would keep everything the same just higher or lower
