Why even change to x470. Offers usually nothing over b450 other than SLI. B550 has a chance to work with Ryzen 5000, but not guaranteed yet. At least there is some hope, since it sounds like AMD is actually keeping am4 around for longer than people expected. There is some pretty good $130 b550 boards out there right now, with VRMs better than any b450, and 80% of x470.

MSI boards are underrated. Even the low end. 👍 Good to hear it's running good. Hows the IPC on 3900x vs your 2600x, i.e general snappiness, opening desktop files, browsing, etc. I have the same CPU in a x470 MSI M7. But my lord, its a lot slower compared to my 7700K on my other PC in literally everything besides rendering video.

@kendokaaa
@kendokaaa 4 жыл бұрын
@@MistahMOB IPC (if it's IPC and not single core performance you meant, I see the two confused all the time) has improved by 10-15%, while actual single core performance is something like 20% better, ignoring other improvements in the architecture like lower core to core and ccx to ccx latency which affect snappiness. In any observable metric, the 3900X is a decent deal faster than the 7700K although a big overclock on the 7700K can help it catch up in most games. Probably shouldn't be buying a 12 core CPU if all you do is game though as the 3700X is better suited for that. Browser, office, productivity benchmarks etc. all put Zen 2 chips at the very least above the 7700K. My 2700X did feel like it wasn't quite as snappy as it could be but I can't say the same for my 3900X.

John Ashby Definitelt! I have seen the move from ddr to dd2 to ddr3 to ddr4 and always the new memory has been ridigilously expensive a couple of or years... wait three years from then release and the price difference is not anymore huge. And for that reason the middle range and low end motherboards support new memory two or three years after the memory release. So 2022 Sounds about right for ddr5 X-series motherboards, 2023 for B-series and for A-series... who knows 2025?

Brilliant video which backs up my enlightened moment I had a week ago. Let me explain. I am a new builder with a 15 year old computer so I decided to start buying parts. The first thing I brought was the case and the psu which happened to be a Corsair tx850m. Now the experts amongst you know where this is going but I obviously did not do my homework. One 8 pin power cable!! A lot of controversy on the Internet over whether you must use an 8 plus 4 pin on the high end motherboards and I am on a tight budget anyway so I can't afford to make many mistakes. But I do know that I don't need to over clock. I do know I won't need to use more than one gpu and I do know I don't play many games so found an b460 motherboard with just the 8 pin and a bonus 3.1 gen 2 c header on the board that can be used on my Bequiet 500dx case. This mistake with the PSU made me really see the light about what a lot of us out there really need and what a ton of money we can save at the same time.

Hardware Unboxed is actually recommending B550 boards because of the better VRMs (the vast majority of them have better VRMs than even the B450 Tomahawk Max iirc). Personally I think MOST B450 boards will be fine for most users, but I do wonder about whether the better VRMs which are on the vast majority of B550 boards might be worthwhile for giving better long-term system reliability, or for allowing better performance or better overclocking, especially with 6 and 8-core Zen 3 CPUs in the future. My guess would be that a B450 Tomahawk and a case with good ventilation will be more than sufficient to provide safe, reliable power and operating temperatures even for an 8-core Zen 3 CPU, but that you might sacrifice a little bit in terms of boost performance or overclockability, especially for heavily threaded workloads (but not so much for gaming, which will continue to be less demanding regarding power delivery even for games which are optimized for 8-cores a few years from now). It's the cheaper (or crappier) B450 boards which are more likely to have issues with 6-8 core Zen 3 CPUs, but even still, I suspect that the biggest issues will just be marginally lower performance, or reduced ability to overclock. For 12+ core systems, it seems like you might as well pay a little bit more for better VRMs, because it seems more likely that you're going to get some kind of benefit in terms of reliability, performance, and/or overclocking, especially if you plan to upgrade to a 12+ core Zen 3 CPU in the future (but then there might be an X570 board which is even more suitable for your needs?). It might also matter if, for some weird reason, you know that the motherboard is going to be used for an unusually hot case, like maybe in a very compact matx case, or in a super hot climate with no air-conditioning (and this seems like a very unlikely/ rare use-case scenario). Aside from the more plausible benefits a B550 board is likely to give for a 12+ core CPU, the biggest benefit of a B550 board with good VRMs might just be that you can get away with running even an 8-core Zen 3 CPU in a very poorly ventilated case with minimal impact on performance or system health, but if that's true, then obviously your money would be much better spent on upgrading your damned case or case fans!

Built this computer 2 years ago now (started with a GTX 1650 because GPU's were crazy, recently upgraded to the RTX 3060ti). System has been great, stable, no issues for years. Plan to keep it another many years before a rebuild. Does everything I want perfectly. Video rendering is super fast (I came from a 7 year old i7-4710hq). Gaming in 1080x60 I can max out every game (except I don't turn on RT). Kept my last computer 7 years, I expect this one to keep me happy for around that long too.

Hi Greg. I have a x470 ATX Mainboard with a R5 3600 and a 5700xt in my main rig and a SFF side rig B450 mATX with a 1600AF and a 2060mini. Or would you rather recommend that I upgrade bios on the x470 and buy another cheap B450 board for the leftover 1600AF, please consider in your answer (if you want to answer, that is, also of course I am happy hearing advice from you others) that I am also planning to get someday a next gen Radeon (Big Navi) or Nvidia (3000 series) card for my main rig depending on the price/performance ratio

I was stucked at 3200 at best, poor power delivery. I wanted to run a 3600 kit and now I can (up to 4400) and I bought a NVMe PCI Gen 4 drive to complete the build. Makes sense now. No passive fan, future proof support and nice selection of micro ATX boards made me going with this, while I wasn't considering the X570.

I'm running an MSI B450 Mortar Titanium mobo with an 3600 cpu and the reason I am thinking of upgrading is that the bios for the MSI to work with the 3600 is their inferior Clickbios as opposed to the usual ones you see shown in videos. I'm not confident that this bios is as good as something coming out on B550 mobos who have had over 1 year to work on them. I've been trying to decide between the x570 and b550 Tomahawks from MSI and thought the b550 might have an advantage because of their long development time. I'd like to think the mobo makers have learned a thing or two about how to make Ryzen work its best during the long period. What do you think?

All excellent points regarding the B550 boards, I just put together a Ryzen 5 3600 last week using the Asus Tuf micro atx board. Everything worked out of the box and the PC runs great. Hitting 4.2ghz easily with PB on. I'm not missing out on the extra bandwidth atm. I don't like purchasing just released parts, I like to give it a little time for bugs to be worked out by early adopters and then theres the price for being an early adopter. Just need a new generation of video card to come out and I'll have this little PC finished.

PCI is upgraded across the board in many cases with b550. what was running on pci2 on b450 is now on pcie3. for the most part. And you get pcie4 x4 to the chipset vs pcie2 x4 on b450. So there are other scenarios involving io that will be less likely to bottleneck. And with the general purpose lanes being upgraded a step that give mb makers more bandwidth to add things to the board.

Greg Salazar I read a Reddit post claiming that RTX280TI is already using up half the bandwidth of PCi Express gen 3 X16 meaning it already uses 8X worth of lanes. And if the new coming 3080/3090 cards are 70-100% faster then a 2080TI that means that already this year cards will be coming out using pretty much all the bandwidth of Gen 3 and if you build a computer today you typically build it at least for 4-5 years time. There is a risk that already by 2022 gen 3 will be obsolete and mid range cards coming out that require gen 4 bandwidth. What is your opinion on this Greg?
