It's become fairly common for retro gaming enthusiasts to hunt down old CRTs to enjoy their favorite older games, but what about the HD CRT?
Does adding digital go against the whole point of getting a CRT? What about lag?

The KV-34XBR910 is the exact same as the KD-34XBR960 except: 1) DVI instead of HDMI 2) No CableCARD 3) Does not accept MemoryStick Pro Duo without an adapter A couple notes: CableCARD is all the stuff cable companies use to uniquely authorize a cable box, except in modular form so that you can stick it in your fancy HDTV TV… the digital equivalent of a “Cable-ready TV” that doesn’t require renting a cable box. It was also useful if you brought your own cable box, like a digital HD TiVo, and didn’t want to pay to rent one from the cable co. Unfortunately, they charged almost as much for the CableCARD as they did for you to rent a cable box. iLink is just Sony’s marketing name for mini IEEE 1394 FireWire. Lots of digital camcorders and even the PlayStation 2 had it. Pioneer and others were pushing IEEE 1394 as the standard digital video interface over DVI/HDMI but it didn’t work out. I’m guessing Sony only has it to connect their digital camcorders for playback, hence why it is only on the front. The KV-34XBR910 and the KD-34XBR960 have the exact same SFP tube. The XBR970 switched to an inferior Taiwanese-produced tube. I’m the original owner of an XBR910, albeit, the 30” version that they discontinued for the XBR960 series. Back in 2003 I went with the KV-30XBR910 because many on AVSForum were reporting discoloration on the larger tubes that were supposedly due to the size making it difficult to keep the aperture grille aligned (green blobs). It’s also technically the highest DPI of any tube Sony ever produced, since it’s smaller but with the same resolution. It doesn’t like HiDef NES (640x480 only), UltraHDMI, or PC due to really sensitive timings but it still gets “WOW!”s every time someone sees it.

A couple more notes: I’m not sure the MemoryStick slot is actually “Pro.” It’s probably just a combo for standard-size and Duo in the same slot. Non-“Pro” Duo is a thing. ;) Both full size and Duo fit without adapters in the one slot on a 960 while my 910 only fits full size without a Duo adapter. I believe mine also supports a maximum capacity of 128MB, which is why Lexar made a 256MB MemoryStick with a switch that could select between two 128MB banks. This is the one I bought to use between my Sony MPD-AP20U and my XBR910, but perhaps the limitation was more about the MPD-AP20U. I recall it being the TV tho’. Because they supposedly only updated the physical slot, the 960 may also be limited to 128MB. I paid $2,300 at Circuit City and got a $200 “merchandise card” (gift card) and they threw in the official stand for free. Basically, their agreement with Sony meant that they couldn’t reduce the $2,300 MSRP but they could throw all kinds of other incentives at you. ;) I believe the matching stand was a $300 value. Of course, the 34” version would’ve cost more but maybe not by the time the 960 replaced it. The only other XBR I ever bought at MSRP was a KDL-52XBR2 LCD from Best Buy Magnolia Home Theater. Due to a similar agreement with Sony I had to pay the full $5,000 MSRP even though it was open box and incomplete (missing the remote/stand). I did get a $1,200 gift card though and it was ISV-certified/calibrated by their Magnolia HT techs. ;)

Oh also all KD starting models have digital antenna capability meaning any antenna you used will work with post mid 09 or 2009 mid year broadcasts of atsc nature vs analog ntsc (national television system(s?) Committee vs Advanced television systems committee) so you can watch free to view ota or over the air tv stations such as your pbs station or if you also are fortunate enough I guess to have 2 stations of pbs in your area then that would also work just as an example of what you would use such a tuner for although unless you solely use said tv set and not an other tv for non videogames then I would recomend nit waisting the lifespan of such a high end set on average tv use etc
@bsanchez3563

KV starting models have an ANALOG tuner in them so you know the type of tuner from the model number and genrally or at least occasionally the type of tech the tv is ie LCd sets are a KVL for analog (obviously going to be only a model number assigned to the early 00s sets pre 2007 bush administration mandate for all future and then as of 2k&7 model year of tv and other tv devices ie a vcr or dvd recorder etc equipped with a tuner must be analog AND digital tuner equipped not just analog or else it must be digital tuner equipped) no longer limited to being a rule for larger than say 27 inch or 29/30 inch models and up in screen size was around 2004 model uear era onwards was the case until said 2007 requirement..anyways ueah so thus a KDL model tv is a digital compatible LCD type of tv wether dorect view or rptv using an lcd tech inside of it...

FYI: iLink is Sony’s miniature FireWire connector. IEEE1394 FireWire was once competing with DVI and HDMI to be the digital Hi-Def standard, so those probably work like extra digital inputs. Only devices I know of that ever used it for a digital output were miniDV cameras but there might be a DVD player or two. AFAIK, the PlayStation 2 only used it for networking.

@@laserfights Yeah, by the time HDMI rolled around it was far behind DVI. IIRC, Pioneer was the one pushing it the hardest while even Sony was doing DVI then HDMI. Everyone I knew with a pre-HDMI HDTV with a digital input had a DVI port, though we all knew the future format was undecided. All the tech mags would go on and on about how early adopters might get locked out of future HD content if their pick didn’t become the standard with HDCP. Obviously, DVI can carry HDCP but FireWire didn’t have never used it for miniDV/DV link. I wonder if it was even possible.

Neat video ilink was for communication with cam corders and that's also the main reason Sony put memory stick slots on the TV's for a bit. Cable card is really neat and it's a crying shame it was never really pushed more. Basically if you had a cable TV subscription instead of asking the cable company to rent a cable box, you just ask for the cable subscription card. Cable boxes used these same cards, it's a decryption / account key card. So basically if you plugged a cable card into your TV, your TV could access all the encrypted cable network channels on your paid account removing the need for a cable box!! Cable companies didn't like tv's to have this cause they couldn't rent you decryption set top boxes

Cool video, but you seem to be using confusing input lag and response time as the same thing. Input lag is how long it takes for a signal to be displayed, response time is more so the amount of time it takes for a pixel to actually change when there is a change. A poor response time leads to lots of motion blur, ALL CRT's, HD or not, have an instantaneous response time. As soon as the gun scans the phosphors again, it changes. Some HD CRT's (basically all sony's) do some image processing (as you found out) which introduces a lag between when the signal is sent and when it is displayed. Your testing coincides exactly with mine, on a KDP-65WS550. 720P is 20 MS mid screen, 1080i is 30. not ideal, as 720P doesn't look great at 65 inches. There are service menu settings you can change which disable image processing at 1080i on the XBR960, making it very very close to lag free.

I have a Toshiba 32 inch HD CRT. The composit inputs show 576i when I check the settings. I absolutely love playing the old consoles on it. It seems like the SMS was built with this TV in mind. I have never detected any lag of any kind. I have even played Mike Tyson's punch out on it. My actual LCD in my living room is terrible with old consoles. It runs HD content through the HDMI port at 720i. The mini consoles are at home on this TV. Never detected any lag on them either. However, my Super NT Mini will not work through the HDMI port. I bought a HDMI to composite down scaler and it works perfectly with it. I'm guessing that this is an analouge HDTV. I read that there are a few of them out there. I can't find any information on the TV any where. So, that is my guess.

Ive had an RCA D34W20 since 2002 and it is fantastic. It supports 1080i over a DVI connection. My only gripe is that time hasn't been friendly to it. The right speaker went out around 3 to 4 years ago and all the front panel buttons seem to either not work correctly and will trigger other buttons. I want to turn the volume down and It ends up changing the input or opens the menu for example. I recently replaced all the capacitors in my Atari Race Drivin's monitor so I feel confident doing it on my HD CRT but I haven't gotten around to it quite yet.

Both of my screens are perfect for classic gaming. Well, you're not correct. LCD has NOTHING to do (even today) vs a HD CRT TV or even a CRT TV. Besides color, contrast and brightness, Motion Resolution is unbeatable. Many. MANY people has the wrong idea that looks similar but we have to remember that we are talking about VIDEO, not still pictures. There are many Motion Resolution videos over Internet, I suggest to to watch them on ANY LCD, LED or even OLED and then, on a Plasma Display or even better, on a CRT TV. Well, OLED with BFI it seems that looks a LOT better than before... So, maybe we can say "OLEDs without BFI".

Think my issue with a HD CRT is that if you want the best TV to play PS3/Xbox 360/ Wii era games than a Plasma is just better no? Native 720p, slightly lower input lag on good models, less bulky/heavy, cheaper/easier to find and they still have fantastic motion clarity. Maybe I'm missing something though haha I've just been thinking about whether I want a HD CRT or a Plasma...

Plasma IS the way to go in my opinion. However like LCD, no set is native 1280x720. My 37" Panasonic is 1024x720 with its rectangluar pixels but most "720p" plasmas are 1366x768. Still, it's the best way to go for PS3/360/Wii U. For Wii I have a 480p widescreen plasma. This CRT would also be perfect for the Wii. I have a 4:3 HD Wega for Xbox, Gamecube, and the handful of PS2 games that support 480p.

Should your consoles be going to your AV unit, not your TV? Then only the video would be sent to the TV, and the audio would go to the surround sound stuff. The problem with PS3 games is that the console had no hardware scaler so most HD games supported one HD resolution or the other, meaning 720p or 1080i. You didn’t exactly get your choice. It was even worse for most HD CRTs since they typically only supported one HD resolution and if that wasn’t the one your PS3 game had it would get knocked down to 480i/p. This wasn’t a problem for Blu-Ray since the playback software actually could scale it but that wasn’t happening with games since the CPU was obviously busy running the game.

Do light guns still work on HD CRTs?
@laserfights
@laserfights Жыл бұрын
i do not believe out of the box that they will. any of the tricks you could use to get them working on a modern tv via hd should work. check out lightguns with the retrotink 5x for example there is also apparently a way to disable a lot of processing on this hd crt and that might work but im not sure, i dont know if the issue is the response time or something different. i havent ever disabled the processing or whatever the method is (all of this is just normal settings, no special dev remote or etc), but i believe you have to upscale the image to 1080i if you do and in that case the upscale would probably mess with it.

@@Red05x Yeah you don't need to do anything to get it to 240p. If you play retro games without progressive scan turned on it does it automatically. no HD CRT output 720p. It can take those signals but will either upscale to 1080i or downscale to 480p. So those PS3 games shown at 720p were actually in 1080i in all likelihood. The best uses for a widescreen HD CRT are for widescreen Wii games (DK Country Returns, NSMB Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 1&2, Metroid Prime, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports Resort, Legend of Zelda TP and SS, etc) because you're getting a one to one 480p in and out. It's the best the game can look and run including modern TVs. The PS2 and OG Xbox each had several dozen games that ran in widescreen 480p and each had a handful that ran in 1080i so for these games a HD CRT would work brilliantly. Pretty much every Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U game will need some scaling involved, up from 720p to 1080i or down from 1080p to 1080i which is why Plasma and LCD televisions was the way to go for that generation

@@laserfights I believe in order for your TV and the other few HD CRTs that accept and display 720p you have to use the analog input (component) as they don't do 720p via HDMI. I shouldn't have but I assumed you were playing Infamous 2 on your PS3 via HDMI which is why I said no HD CRT can do 720p so I just want to clarify. If you ARE using component, and I believe Infamous 2 is 720p, you're getting 720p out of that tv and it must look glorious and would look better than if it's being upscaled to 1080i which might also be the reason why lag is slightly worse. You have the holy grail of HD CRT. I have a 34" Panasonic Tau that is a definite step down from that but still amazing. I had the XBR970 I found for $10 at a thrift shop but sold it when I realized it didn't have the same tech as the far superior 960 and wasn't any better than my Panasonic. I thought, of course it must be better than the 960 it has a higher number!!

@@laserfights keep in mind it works best for component 1080i instead of HDMI input.. it will still work for HDMI but could have some weird things happening. Also this only works for 1080i inputs and not the 720 480. In conjunction you could use a retrotink 5x with the new OS update to display 540p for every consoles on your HDCRT 1080i input basically zero lag with a CRT scanline simulator haha on a HDCRT and it looks amazing. Or you could just game everything on full 1080i which is basically 1080p with the HDPT set to (0) and have retrotink simulated CRT scan lines on a 1080 res Image for 240 or 480 contents with zero blacks bars which I prefer since I have the holy grail of all HDCRT SonKV27HS420 4/3 ratio unit. So basically I am gaming on 4/3 HDCRT at full 1080p res zero lag 0.78 with retrotink 5x simulated CRT scan lines with zero black bars.

It is not the same. I brought my Sega in a circuit City back in 2004ish. I got many smiles. Sonic is the best way to check for lag. The console has none and the signal was composite. I'm guessing that everything had to be converted to digital first because the game sucked ass and I was not amused and never looked back. We are used to twice or three times the lag as back in the analog days. It could make you a better gamer if you ever go back.
