It's so good to see people talking about BM. It's not only my favorite Mccarthy book, but also my favorite book period. I love his writing style so much and how he paints these disturbing scenes in such a poetic and direct way. Thumbs up!

Also read Blood Meridian and Notes On Blood Meridian this year. It seems to be a book you either love or hate, and I'm definitely on the former category. It is a difficult book to read, in both theme and style, but I was absolutely mesmerized by it. Good video, as always, guys!

Currently reading Blood Meridian, and it is quite the experience. I even decided to start over after reading 145 pages, as I noticed my reading approach was all wrong. It's the fusion of fiction and nonfiction in both writing style and story that throws you off. I'm almost done, but I wouldn't know how to rate it at all. I think it's more of a book to appreciate rather than like, because it has kept me thinking it for a while now. Definitely a book for a reread and closer study if nothing else. Small fun fact: The Judge and his fiddle made me think of The Devil went down to Georgia.

I completely understand that! My re-read was much more enjoyable as I felt I understood the story to a higher level - though I will never be sharp enough to dig out all of the philosophical references and deeper meanings. It is certainly an experience. Yes I know what you mean! Thanks for watching😊 Ed

Just finished it. Was about half finished on October 7th when the Israeli conflict happened and went through a horrible depression due to carnage overload. After a couple of days reflection finished it. Made extensive notes and will definitely reread and expand notes. I’ve never seen the westward expansion of the US in this light before. It is a brutal book but necessary.

Definitely check out the novel Armor by John Steakley, it is a very underrepresented book, the book can be taken as a science fiction companion piece in themes; with radically different styles. Steakley and McCarthy were both Texans, and fortunately McCarthy has lived a long literary life, unfortunately for Steakley, he died very young in his, having only written two books; which is why he is nearly forgotten.

This was a great review on a modern American classic- almost without equal. In the mid 80s, I was told by my father, a former English lit. professor and editor to read Blood Meridian and I found it hard for a few reasons. I gave it up for Lonesome Dove, which was more to my taste. I picked up McCarthy's novel later while in the army and I appreciated it much more and grew to love it. Over the years, I researched the real John Glanton. I attempted to completely rewrite The Handbook of Texas' mistake-riddled biography on the soldier and scalp hunter, which failed, but some of my material was merged into the HBT narrative. Recently, I read a great new novel called LIKE WOLVES by D.A. Vega, which I have recommended to numerous friends and to you. I guarantee that you will not regret its perusal as I see comparisons with McCarthy. Here is my unedited Glanton biography. www.findagrave.com/memorial/71170192/john-joel-glanton

A good friend who is big reader but has issues with religion (cause he went to catholic school). So I told him, would you leave the judge in the same house as your niece and nephew?! That is why religion and/or spiritual principles exist because this is what men were doing to each other just 150 years ago!! My favorite scene is when they happen to ride upon a caravan of dead sheep and the cowboys still on their horses all bones!!. So beautifully written.

I've wanted to read this for some time, but I'm daunted by everything I hear about the prose. How would you compare this style to All the Pretty Horses? I just finished it tonight and very much enjoyed it, but found it to be a much more...deliberate read than The Road or No Country.

I have not read All the Pretty Horses. but Ed has and he said that it is very different, with Blood Meridian being written in a more archaic/biblical style. It has the classic McCarthy landscape description though, which I think we all enjoy. Will

Just completed this book in a readalong on Mike’s discord. i can acknowledge his genius, but I didn’t enjoy this at all. The Judge was an interesting character, but I pretty much detested everything else. I didn’t like the casual racism and associated racial slurs, I didn’t like the pointless violence to no end, and I didn’t feel anything but despair at any point during the read. I’m just the wrong audience I guess.
@thebrothersgwynne
@thebrothersgwynne 2 жыл бұрын
It's a shame it did not click with you. I guess it is one of those you either love or hate. I agree, The Judge is so, so interesting! For me I thought that without engaging with the themes of prejudice and racism, Cormac McCarthy would have gone against what he is intending. Seems to me like he is looking at the brutality of America during this period, demeaning the idea of the American Dream and exposing the horror of the time, whilst not giving explicit judgment so that the reader can decide that it is wrong for themselves. This is part of the appeal of Blood Meridian to me. I feel he is shining a light on a period of time that was profoundly racist, and whilst it is abhorrent, we have no doubt that it is historically accurate, and I think that this is McCarthy's point. That America was not built on peace and love and goodwill to all, but exploitation and brutality. If he took out some aspects, such as the focus on racism, it would seem like he was justifying it, to me and Ed anyway, But I guess that's part of the beauty of books, that people can take entirely different things from it. Thanks for watching! Will
