Ghost Machine is a new comic company attempting to make a splash on the indie comics scene with 4 new comic universes. One is the Rook Exodus universe, a sci outing where terraformed planets are owned by corporations and all elements are controlled via neural network. Rook Exodus tells the tale of a seemingly abandoned world as the surviving wardens (controllers of the animal populations) vie for control or escape. Created by Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok we take a look at the first 2 issues of this outing and discuss is it worth your time? The world building is cool but how is everything else? Find out here on Casually Comics!

Any kind of bear. They’re pretty common everywhere and a group can pretty reliably take out small militias.

Love that you are covering the Ghost Machine books. I was really looking forward to Rook: Exodus and have not been disappointed so far. Jason Fabok's art is sooo good. Not surprising for a fellow Good Canadian Kid who was mentored by the great David Finch. Also, dug the Iain M. Banks reference. The Culture series is top shelf sci-fi!!!

I'm on the Rook: Exodus train like the flame-throwing guitarist strapped to the truck in Mad Max Fury Road. Love Rook: Exodus. And I'm a sucker for those helmet variants. I think this series will definitely get into the neural link between warden and animal as they seem to be setting the stage for that. The preview pages for issue 3 have some foreshadowing with that line "You need a better relationship with your animals." Plus that scarecrow cover they teased for issue 5 makes me wonder what happens if the helmet stops working...do the animals turn on their wardens if they don't have a healthy relationship? I chuckled when you said "If you don't like the art, then this book isn't for you..." If someone doesn't like Fabok's art, then maybe comics are not for them 😄. The art is ridiculiously good. Can't wait for issue 3.

The whole Ghost Machine thing kinda reminds me of the CrossGen experiment in the early 2000s. Getting a bunch of industry veterans together and launching a new multiverse. It probably would have been more successful if it were published & distributed by an already established company like Image. As it was, there were some very cool series and a lot of good ideas, but it ultimately fizzled. I think Marvel owns the rights now, and hasn't really done much with them.

I think the rocket building is necessary to bring home the point that this is elevated realism, or just poorly understood reasoning, and a tale of fiction like Barsoom series or Interstellar. If it wasn't for that idealistic The Astronaut Farmer kind of tone, I already would cringe my way out of reading any of this. And I would already rather read Blame! manga or Gunnm, or maybe Steven Grant's 'The Rook'.
