A retro video game collection can be a great thing, but how do you know when it's time to sell? Or that you should? Or shouldn't?

I would love to have all the money in theory, but I can't physically or mentally push myself to do so, lol. My collection is personally complete to me; Nes to Series X. Possibly if I could sell exactly what I wanted to for the amount I wanted at once. I would and be content for it. I just wouldn't want holes in my collection.

About preserving games, that’s an interesting topic. I always wanted to have every game I played in physical format. But as times passes games changes a lot. Si for example in the 80s I was playing contra on my NES, this game is around 30 mins to 40 mins long, so I played it maybe like 1000 times, so the music and everything from this game is stock on my head. So it feels nice to have the original al cartridge. And with new games, like the tears of the kingdom, I played around 3 months, I have the cartridge, but I think I will never play again, this game is just too long, and I have so many games on my shelf. So around this year I was thinking, will I buy the new god of war for the ps5, right now is on ps plus, if I pay 1 or 2 months I can finish it, and that’s enough, if I had the game, probably I will never play again. And there’s another thing, when the PSN for ps5, when they pull the plug, all DLC and patches will be lost forever, so even if you have the disc, if there is some major error in the game and you need that patch, you will not be able to play the game. So it is better to play them now. I think it is more important to play them, and they are so long we are going to play them just once, so maybe digital version is not so bad after all, after finishing the game, the game doesn’t use space on your basement.

My dad used to collect books when I was growing up and his collection was in the tens of thousands and it pretty much overtook a huge portion of our house. Now that he has been gone for 22 years, my mom still lives in that house and we are still trying to get rid of/sell the books. My point is, a large collection will just end up being a burden to you or your loved ones and you can't take it with you after you're gone. Oh yeah, and just buy flashcarts.

With that being said, the individuals that are buying just to resell and don’t actually CARE about the hobby and are in it for the money-THOSE are the people that grind my gears and really make me not want to have anything to do with it. A lot of respect for you, dude. Being able to make big decisions in life is really commendable. Personally, I am building up a small collection of the common main consoles and a small amount of games for each. A lot of it comes from getting to play the games i enjoyed as a kid, or the games i wanted to enjoy, but missed out on. My goal is to have a nice clean set up where i can play almost any system with very little configuration. Like, i dont want to have go behind the tv and reconnect everything just to play on a console. Oddly enough, having an emulation device has driven a lot of this, because I've (re)discovered games from yesteryears. Unless i wanted to be in gennius book of world records or a professional twitch streamer/youtuber, i would never see the need of owning a huge game collection of games that might just be collecting dust. On the topic of physical vs digital, i think the moment they (xbox/ps/nintendo) force a digital only console, is the moment i just switch to steam completely. I am still very bitter about nintendo sunsetting the virtual console in favor of switch online. I totally understand why they did it, but it was still a huge slap in the face to anyone who bought digital on the Wii VC, and paid again an upgrade fee for the Wii U VC, on the premise that you could simply have a digital library and not need physical copies. Its also one of the big reasons why i dont really get into games whose primary focus is on online multiplayer. Sure im missing out, but at the end of the day, I'd rather be able to enjoy a game for many years.

I never put too much effort into an actual retro game collection beyond what I owned when I was little, and I had emulation in my plans since I first experimented with it in the mid 90s. I got mostly out of the scene for a while, and after dipping back in I'm impressed with how much it has improved over the years, even decades. For the last several years I have been buying everything digital--including retro games. I tend to go the "official" route when I can, although in many cases that is still through emulation--but it's nice that emulation is there, and improving all the time, for those games that will never come back.

When I started considering buying some retro hardware, the only console I could justify was the Wii exactly because of the motion controls. Emulating that would require the wiimotes and even as knock-off versions at the end it would cost as much as the hardware itself - so I figured I could keep it real with an unmodded Wii and a handful of games I'm interested in.

Totally think you made the right choice, Shawn. Software emulation is so good now there's barely any difference between real and emulated. I have an O.G. NES, Genesis 1 and Sony PVM and have done input lag tests and determined with the right emulator and variable refresh monitor, you can achieve input lag numbers that rival a real analog setup (expect ~35ms for 60i analog video). And this is all without wasting your money on FPGA-based emulation. I also have a custom arcade cabinet using a FreeSync display that gets crazy good input numbers, plus it can run R-Type, Mortal Kombat, NARC, and NBA Jam at their native 55 Hz rate with zero stuttering and tearing. All emulated. I'm telling you man, emulation is the way to go. Save your money bros.

I sold my collection a long time ago but, I remember a big part of it for me was the enjoyment of looking and finding the games. I started collecting on a whime just one day I was at the flea market and at that time lots of people were selling nintendo games and I was like i'm going to try and collect them all. Little did I know how many there were at the time, I was lucky in the sense it was before ebay started getting popular so I was getting most games like 3 for 5 and no one really knew the value. I discovered funcoland a couple months later and they had a price list for all the games which was a huge help to me now I had not only a list of nes games but how much at least they sell them for and prices changed every month which were way off from what they were actually worth. As I got closer to completing Nes, moved on to Snes, and then N64. It took me a long time to complete nes very little of it came from ebay, every where I went new that had a funcoland I would go as well as blockbuster, hollywood video and independent movie stores flea markets, garage sales ect. I tried to keep the best copies sold off dups to buy missing ones overall it was a very inexpensive hobby as I tried to get deals and sale to keep cost close to nothing. I don't regret selling it other then the fact when I sold it and I looked up some of the stuff I had and what it goes for now kind of sucks but I don't miss the actual collection.

I've been using emulators since 1998, used Nesticle back in the days and MAME for a really long time, so my collection is basically a nostalgic display.

Once I sold my retro stuff, I never looked back. There's so many good games coming out to keep me busy. When a title gets re-released I'll be like "oh I'll try that " or if a certain old title comes to mind, I'll emulate it. Just from working at a game store in the area, I've learned most people are shelf collecting.

Hi, Thanks for this video! I think that I will start downsizing my collection heavily. I'm currently a student living abroad, so my game collection is still at my parent's house. I move places very often, and my life is unlikely to be stable in the next few years. Having all these games and consoles in big boxes in my parent's house, sitting around whithout being used, doesn't make a lot of sense. I would rather sell a big part of it to focus on the games and consoles that I care about the most.

Don't sell them you'll be sorry!😭 I sold my collection, including 100s of magazines, back in 2005 to pump the money into my x-ray tech studies. I sold all for next to nothing and said I'll get it later. Flashforward to now, I lost my career in 2016, and today's prices are ridiculous. I have spent several $1,000s trying to get back my collection and then some! My pride and joy were really the magazines which I'll never get back. Anyway the sacrifice was in vain!😭

Maybe. Its not sustainable and becoming quickly insanely niche. It's almost model train collecting tier. We are talking about often playing games on extinct TV technology with 30 even 40 year old consumer tech in the consoles. We should be embracing preservation through emulation at this point.

I think this answer depends on everyone, but I sold like 2 years ago all my game boys, my NES, SNES and half of the games of each collection also half my games of the N64, I just kept my favorite games like battletoads, the legend of Zelda, contra. My collection of this retro consoles where not so big, like 30 games for each console. First I regretted a little bit, but then thinking more carefully I don’t play this games that much, I feel so lazy to connect this consoles, because I don’t have the space to have everything connected at the same time, also during the Corona virus I didn’t have that much money to buy games, so with this games I sold I bought newer games for switch. I still have my famicom AV and my Super famicom, I was going to sell, but, I don’t know why I found a video talking about the Everdrive, this games that you have a sd card inside and you can have all games, but it works in a real console, they are a little expensive, but if you like your consoles, it is completely worth it. I still like my retro consoles, but having so much games uses so much space, and very rare I used them, there is more probability I will use this everdrive cartridge. But I still support newer consoles like ps5 and switch buying the games.

i felt alot of regret selling my n64 as a kid, an the switch made up for it. Half of those games didn't even work very well anymore unless you blow on them and i hardly ever was going to actually play it as i got older. You can build a digital switch library and most of the classics worth while are available at a decent price to collect on there and its way more convenient to have digital games on a fresh new device you can take on the go

I’m a renter and will be for the foreseeable future so a large physical media collections really is too cumbersome right now, though I do admire guys like Joe from Game Sack or Metal Jesus Rocks who are basically retro game museum curators, that’s not for me. My preferred way to play most retro games these days is through emulators using modern 3rd party controllers, for example I play Genesis and Saturn games with an 8-Bit Do M30, FPGA technology is also really exciting for anything N64 and lower…btw If you have a Meta Quest you can side load a Virtual Boy emulator and have a better experience that what I remember it being like to play an actual Virtual Boy

Of course I collect physical for Switch as well…sold my Wii U because 99% of the good games are on Switch as well. Although I grew up on Nintendo, the bulk of my current collection is PS stuff. I went back and picked up some PS3 titles I missed since there no real backwards compatibility for PS3 on newer systems. I'm an old dude that gradually went from NES to SNES to PS1 and took a loooong break from anything new after that. I still hesitate to keep up with modern gaming because of everything being asked of consumers now and over the last couple generations with pay walls and all that. My current set up is a Wii, DS, SNES classic and Genesis classic. I feel like I have all I need for the rest of my life. I'd much rather have those classic versions (with my necessary controller extensions) than having to shuffle games in and out of boxes due to space we just don't have.
