Does dynoing in 4WD lower the result in anyway? I'm guessing that added parasitic lost of power going through the 4WD system would do something to lower the numbers. I guess if you did the before and after tests the same way then you should be getting the right % at least. There is another video with rear wheel dyno test and they got substantially higher numbers. Just wondering if anyone knows. BTW - I just got one installed and I'd agree is good but not great. It's a noticable difference but the truck is still a slow truck... just not as slow. lol. Seriously, it is better up a grade or at high altitude, which is why I wanted it.

4wd does have more parasitic loss than 2wd. I was comparing my 4wd SC run to a 4wd Stock run I did from this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7BgfM6Y1627pWw.htmlsi=wvFa-lJEioyxzUtR Stock crank hp is 270 and Stock wheel hp is 198 - a 27% loss in power. So if you apply that same wheel hp loss to the SC run, then 261 wheel hp would be approximately 357 theoretical crank supercharged hp. Theoretical 357 crank SC hp - 270 stock crank hp = 87 hp gain at the crank. Compared to the dynoed 63hp actual gain at the wheels. The problem is Magnuson claims 335hp at the crank which is a 24% increase in power over stock crank hp. And then in the same description they say 30% increase. None of the Magunson claimed numbers make sense to me. After my testing, The real world hp gains that I got on my 4runner are somewhere between 63hp (actual wheel) and 87hp (theoretical crank).
@michaelfletcher1224
@michaelfletcher1224 8 ай бұрын
@@DBCoffroad got it. The Magnuson website says, “this system delivers 30% MORE HORSEPOWER than stock and with an additional 28% MORE TORQUE output at just 6psi of boost. That's more than 335hp and 345lb-ft at the crank!” 30% more hp from 270hp is 351hp so their statement that it’s “more than 335hp” is still correct. It’s a strange way to put it but it’s accurate. Maybe they’re trying to point out that worse case is still more than 335hp. I’m guessing there are a lot of factors that can change the % number depending on exactly how you measure. You did a good apples to apples comparison so your data seems solid and being on the low end of the power increase can be bit of a bummer after spending a lot of money hoping to get more. My first impression on my truck, no data or actual testing done, is that on the low end it’s slightly better. Above 3500-4000rpm it’s actually quite a bit stronger. Climbing a steep grade with a fully loaded truck is night and day. It’s by no means a fast truck and just driving around town it’s only a little better but up a grade or passing at highway speed it’s actually a pretty big improvement. I’d spend the money again now that I’ve experienced it. Thanks for your video!

Wow, after reading all of the pros and cons, I am glad I stayed with the stock size 265/70R17s and just did a 2" lift to increase ground clearance. Getting a winch installed this week and rock sliders but not much more weight than that. Since for most of us, overlanding is on 95% 15mph or 20mph roads to great places it will do what I need it for. Tow a overlanding/off road trailer built from a 6'x7' all aluminum military communications shelter that originally went in the back of a Humvee. Timbren suspension and lock and roll hitch. Around 1500 lbs and can step in and sleep at the end of the day. Have fun out there!

You were measuring horsepower at the wheels, they were measuring it at the crank. Either way, 261.13 / 198.46 = 1.315... which means you gained 31.5% hp. I think this supercharger will feel worth it if you tow or drive up long mountain passes. Another negative is having to switch to premium gas.

Hey thanks for the feedback! My favorite mods were probably Rock Sliders, Larger tires, Regearing and Onboard Air. - I've hit the rock sliders several times without even trying. I think they are more important than under body skids, just because you can usually pick a line to avoid scraping underneath. - I think the 4Runner is undergeared from the factory especially if you go up in tire size, even to a 33". - Larger more aggressive tires for better traction and durability when you go adventure. (I'd stick with 33 or 34" if I did it over again.) - Onboard air compressor to air back up if you air down on the trails. Having it mounted and wired with a switch is very convenient. Most of the other Mods I would do something different, or try to find a lighter version (front bumper, winch, skids, rear bumper, etc.) Oh and if you just want to light money on fire, the Supercharger was a good choice. 😂

The very first mod I do on any vehicle is a catalytic converter shield, the one I got for for my 2021 trd offroad added alot of protection on the driveline on top of covering the converters, one of the toyota techs was telling me about a tacoma they had in the shop that had all 4 converters cut off and it was going to cost almost $5,000 in just part's. Converter theft is bad in and around the city here.

I think two things here, my thought is that Magnuson went for a "good as OEM" reliability and power improvement approach. EASILY, could you get get much higher numbers on this setup if you ran more boost. The reality is, if you went this route, and are still willing to go above and beyond, you could probably get a tuner and pursue higher boost at risk of longevity. Heck, you could even change the pulley ratio on the SC and push it to higher RPM. Really depends on what you want to do, but I have no doubt you can push a 4L V6 w/ a TVS1320 to nearly 400HP if you really wanted..

Hey, glad I found this video. 2020 TRD Orp 4Runner here, installed my SC about a year ago. Running similar weight and setup as you. Worth it (for me) 100%, price be damned. Ran into one issue, let me explain. I average 15.5mpg cruise, ~10 mpg if I lead-foot in town. Using Mag's "weekend warrior tune". Also went the DYI route, took me a solid weekend to install. But it's perfect. Plus a custom pump reroute due to winch clearances. Have almost 7500 miles on the system so far no problem at all, otherwise. Now for the reason I am reaching out. Has anyone heard of the torque limiter on later edition 5th gens? I have one issue that I have yet to find an a clear answer/fix on. ECU/Transmission electronic limiting during 0-60 full throttle pulls. Only in 1st. Like a on off on off on off type of deal. Like 100% throttle, 80, 100, 80. Etc. Other notes, I have the S&B cold air with k/n cone, and magnaflow overland pro exhaust. Napkin math with all current mods, (no dino, glad I found you), puts me right in the range of ~415 hp at the crank. Maybe zealous to say, but if I am indeed hitting this limiter (400Hp/tq), then wtf. I tried to find a decent performance shop in the SE-USA that can help, all I get we don't work on those. BTW Magnuson's support straight told me, there is an electronic throttle limiter in 1st, it is an issue and they don't know much more. Anyways thought I reach out. Thank

Hey! Glad you like your supercharger. I get around 12mpg average with the 35s and 4.88 gears. So you have a custom tune with the supercharger? I'm curious how you napkin math to 415 crank hp. Magnuson claims 335hp at the crank. AFE makes an intake where they claim it adds 24 hp. Exhaust is 5-10hp on a good day. So even high numbers are 369hp. Is your tune making up the difference to 415? (46 additional hp?) That's pretty impressive! Transmission: I haven't heard of a torque limiter, but that makes sense. The transmission constantly wants to upshift even though it might be pulling strong in 2nd or 3rd gear. I really want a tune for the transmission to make sure all the supercharger power is on tap. To me it's like a body builder that skipped leg day. More power, but it doesn't seem all useable. Now that I've had it for a while, the biggest benefit seems to be at higher speeds. Like passing on the highway, that's when I really notice a difference in power. Thanks for reaching out!
@vorsol1994
@vorsol1994 9 ай бұрын
Hey, No custom tune outside of what Magnuson provides for install. I picked the weekend warrior tune, no idea on the real difference between the three they offer. Still looking for a shop I can trust nearby that actually works on 5th gens to get a pro tune. Also I am on 33s - Yoko Geos, no gear swap yet. So diff ratio's than you for sure. I am estimating higher gains to the SC due to the CAI increased airflow (~40% advertised increase airflow) really lets the SC get all the air it wants. I am betting the SC is pulling closer to a 90 hp gain, likely more. They claim 30% on a good day, which is higher then the 335 they advertise. 30% gain on the stock 270hp is 81 hp. So call it 90hp. I was told the exhaust adds closer to ~25 hp (stock is very restrictive). CAI adds up to ~35 hp (as advertised) Easily the #1 performance upgrade for you folks out there on the fence. S&B CAI check them out, it's worth it. Paired with a pedal commander, it REALLY wakes that engine up and the intake sound is badass. Sooo.. that gets me in the 145 hp over stock range. 270 +145 = 415hp The only clue that I am pushing over the 400 range is the throttle limiter kicking in. Which from my research is 400 ft/lb of torque. Again it only happens from dead stop pulls. Rolling starts she absolutely rips no pull back. Now, there is a possibility that I am much lower than my estimate, but the during hard 1st gear pulls the ECU/Trans is detecting a surge or spike of power and pulling the throttle back (to prevent trans damage), even if on a dyno it is realistically is in the 375 range. Shrugs, I won't really know until I get a proper dyno.. hence why I am reaching out to other 4runner bros, I had a good convo with @OverlandEngineer on the subject a few weeks back. Also I am running good 93 octane gas. Getting ready to road trip pulling about 3000 pounds of RV camper, my first tow with the SC and other mods. Just installed an aftermarket trailer brake controller as well, all plug and play. Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep you posted!@@DBCoffroad

Love the blower on my '17 and I manually shift it everywhere since day 1. And the thing rips now even with my stock 3.73s on 33's. For context Ive raced ecoboost F150s and 6.2 Silverados and I pull all of em every time and the dudes are pissed they got walked by a 4 runner LOL. Im going 4:56 w air locker soon and Patagonia MT02 35's that only weigh 3lbs more than my Nitto ridge grappler 33's and cannot wait for the easier get up and go. Supercharger on these is a must just for the way the transmission shifts (doesnt down shift anymore!) on highways and grades ..it just stays in higher gear and handles it! Truck drives the way it should from factory with the blower. Do it big and do it all. Gears and boost. 4:88s with boost is what youll need for 37's (if your doing marlin crawler front end) otherwise if 35s is endgame and a blower 4:56 should keep speedo more correct for 34.5's and help with top end. West Texas has 85mph speed limit and trust me going 100 with everyone else is nice to do in a 4R. We went for hours in a group of 5-6 mixed vehicles everyone was going 110 and the 4runner was hangin w deleted Ram diesel and a scat pack challenger no prob w the Magnussen. It takes minutes to get a stock 4R up to 90mph downhill if your lucky. Who cares if its 7-8k the vehicles last forever and resell is always great on em. You have to rebuild the blower every 100k miles tho. Its part of the game.

Well said...Changing gears with bigger tires is an ideal solution but even if you decide to run it all stock, Torque is the secret to calming all of the gear roaming down on these Gen5 beasts & superchargers provide that... I wonder even. if the supercharger wouldn't prolong the transmission long-term in certain stock / on road configurations cutting the shifts by half... The torque in my 4.7 V8 Gen 4 allows me to hang out in gears simply because of having torque at low RPM & low throttle input ridding the torque. I Could never pull it off in my stock 17 Off Road Plus .

A few things to note here. You had the 4 Runner placed on a dynometer in 4WD, and that alone will cause about a 30% parasitic loss. Run the numbers again using only RWD and you will get +81whp and around +73TQ. I believe this is how Magnuson determined their gains. I met the tuner who cracked the ECU and created the stock CA91 map for these 5th Gen 4 Runners over at Westcott Designs yesterday. He stated he can get more power out of the kit without changing pulley. By the way, if you throw about 4 gallons of E85 in with along with 19 gallons of 91 fuel in the tank, the supercharger definitely gets a jump. It's noticeable.

I appreciate the feedback. If I am mistaken by any of the following, please let me know. I would love to learn more. My understanding: I ran the stock engine under the same conditions (4wd) in a prior video. With the stock engine, 35s, 4.88 gears and 4wd it had a 27% parasitic loss to the wheels. 270 crank hp down to 198whp. Then I supercharged the engine and ran it in the same conditions (35s, 4.88 gears and 4wd) and pulled 261hp at the wheels. 261whp-198whp = 63 whp. Magnuson advertised a 335 crank hp increase from the super charger. 335-270=65 total crank hp increase. Which is in line with the 63 hp increase at the wheels I got. Again, If I misunderstand something, please let me know. Thanks!

I also have the Magnuson supercharger on my 2023 4Runner. While it doesn't turn it into a rececar, it's a night and day difference. You're basically getting strong v8 performance instead of dated v6 performance. It comes on starting at about 2,200 RPM and scales up quickly as RPM's rise. It eliminates most of the gear hunting and gives way more passing ability. By far the best mod I've done.

Strong V8 is a stretch. Most V8 half tons these days are up in the 300-320 whp range. Ecoboost F150's on 93 octane and the stock tune are pushing 350-360 whp. I think I saw some 5.7L Land Cruiser dynoing around 290 whp stock. This seems to put this somewhere in between 17 year old 4.6L and 5.7L Toyota V8's.

To put the costs into perspective, the original version marketed as TRD for the 2nd gen Tacoma was about $2500 in 2005 (so fall of 2004 or so). From 2011-2020, that same supercharger was $4500 to $5500. When the 4Runner version came out around the timeframe when TRD partnering ended, it started off as $6500 (mainly due to the flasher being included). At $7500 now, it's really hard to justify, especially knowing that a dealer or someone you will eventually sell the 4Runner to gets to pretend like the SC adds $0 in value to the truck, if you are tempted to trade for another newer 4Runner, GX or something else more premium in the Toyota or Lexus lineup.

You may have some parasitic losses due to your rolling mass with the larger tires that in itself eats some of the gain, I know you dyno'd it pre-supercharged with the same set up, but it might be possible that the gains are reduced with heavier rolling mass. I have a 2020 4runner with 34's and an ICON Stage 3 suspension. I didn't supercharge, but I did Re-Gear to 4.56 and it drives fantastically. The Re-gear (East Coast Gear 3rd members) was probably $4500 (I can't remember exactly). I average right at 16.6 mpg with mixed driving and have put about 18,000 miles on since all of those upgrades, no issues at all.

I agree about the larger tires. Overall having to do the Dyno in 4wd also could have effected the numbers. I kept the conditions the same for both runs so I could at least see a apples to apples gain. I wish I would have Dyno'd a stock 4Runner to really see the difference the tires and gears make. I did do a regear to 4.88s and agree it drove great with just that. I recommend regearing to EVERYONE, it is the best upgrade you can do for performance on the 4Runner in my opinion. You can buy every part imaginable for a 4Runner, but performance parts are non existent. I would love for someone to make a heads and cam package along with a list of other things for my 4Runner. The price to result of a Supercharger has always been my drawback. Too expensive and not very little return. I would love to have 375-500hp on Tap. The Magnuson is a Roots style. Which in theory pulls power from 0 RPM. The Procharger is Centrifugal. Which sort of builds boost like a turbo and ramps up over time. I've talked with people with both and it just seems like Magnuson was preferred. For a FAR BETTER explanation, watch this video. I noticed the discrepancy between the 30% number and listed numbers of HP/Torque on Magnuson's site. I feel like that's pretty misleading. I installed the Magnuson in my 2021 and I do enjoy it, but yeah feels a bit underwhelming for $7K... however, it's a trade off I am willing to make if this supercharger can withstand the test of time. I am running stock size KO2s, with not too much weight added (rock sliders, roof rack). One thing I noticed is the supercharger makes using a pedal commander more enjoyable. Pre-supercharger, the PC would cause the vehicle to sporadically jump gears, very annoying and way too touchy/sensitive. The experience with the PC is MUCH improved with the supercharger added, especially on mountain highways here in colorado. Gives it some nice zip.

Yea the discrepancy is misleading. Plus there are no actual dyno graphs for the 2020+. I feel like they are theoretical numbers and not hard tested numbers. That’s a good point. If you keep the 4Runner for 200k+ miles then I suppose it pays for itself over time with the added performance. Good to know about the pedal commander! I just ordered one and am going to test it out myself. Thanks for the feedback!

@@DBCoffroad my advice on the PC, even with the supercharger installed, is to not set the PC to it's most aggressive setting. You mentioned the price was $1000 cheaper pre Covid on the SC for your 2021 4R. How could Magnuson raise the price of the supercharger post Covid when they didn't even release the supercharger for 2020-2022 model 4Runners until Fall of 2021? Also, no tax on the SC in many states... I didn't get charged tax in Missouri.
@DBCoffroad

Good catch. They already made the supercharger for 2010-2019 4Runners which was $5,995 Pre-Covid. Then Post-Covid, that same supercharger is now $6,995. The 2020+ models have a different ECU/programming to crack because of the new push button/safety sense features. The supercharger hard parts are the same from 2010-2023, it just requires new tune/programming for the 2020+ models. Which raised the price of the 2020+ superchargers to $7,295. If you don’t get charged tax then you score. I was just throwing out the figures that I had to pay. Thanks for watching! Let me know if you have any other questions.

I've owned 5 4Runners Gens 3-5... put over a million miles on all combined, both V6's & V8's... The gear spacing on the Gen 5's is too wide for the inadequate amount of torque the V6 puts out... This is why it continually searches for gears in hilly highway areas... On that same note, I put nearly 400k mi on a gen 4 V6... Reliability is the beauty as we know with 4Runners... I sold superchargers at one point in my career & most naturally aspirated engines are simply not engineered for it... If you have a bullet proof & reliable foundation (Like the V6 then you can get away with 50-60 Hp which although isnt a ton... It provides enough torque to prevent the incessant cycling of gear shifts & gives some needed acceleration out of the hole.. Other than exhaust, induction & tune which might bump you another 15-20hp... Thats about all you really want to do if you want to get the crazy reliability 4R's are known for... If you try to get the power through smaller pulleys & boost, your rings will suffer as will long term reliability...

(To get to the original question)... I currently drive a 2005 Sport with the 4.7 V8 & its my favorite... Out of the box it was a monster & at 195k, its still a monster...It hasn't lost an ounce of pep...Love it... But... : ) that said, I believe the ultimate combo would be a gen 5 with a transplanted 4.7 V8 with mild supercharging... Toyota said that as far as reliability & durability, the 5.7 & 4.7' V8s were the toughest engines they have ever built... The straight 6 in the Land Cruiser is bullet proof but heavy & not an easy fit for 4Runners... I saw a KZfaqr that shoehorned a Supercharged 5.7 into his Gen5 but I question weight balance & handling... A version of the 4.7 is in the Lexus RCF screaming at high RPMs & its in the Tundra line as the smaller engine option hauling & pulling... Also, I know for fact that the 5.7 is a lot less gas efficient, I had 4 employees with Tundras... My V8 now still gets about 20mpg on highway & my gen 5 got about the same for how I had to put my foot in it with trans gearing... Anyway, love these trucks... Great Video... Factory tune SUCKS! Get with OTT (Overland Tailor Tuning). You should gain around 30whp or better with a simple tune. My 2nd gen Tacoma is making 287rwhp/317rwtq after the OTT tune. Only other mods I have are AFE Intake and a performance muffler. Your 4runner should be better (don't dyno in 4WD). I may mess with a smaller pulley down the road but for now I'm pretty happy.

@@jonnytacooutdoors I think as long as you watch the temps for the transmission. I had to get a Scan Gauge for mine and found out the transmission ran hot on longer hill climbs on and offroad. I'll probably add an external transmission cooler. But otherwise it should be good. Like you said, it mostly brings the power back. It is much better on the highway if you have to pass cars though. Stock 4Runner would definitely have met the advertised numbers. Lots of videos on YT about that. You have a lot of weight on the truck plus wheels and tires and something was mentioned about performing the dyno in 4WD? Lots of driveline loss there. So this video is full of misinformation for the uninformed viewer.
@DBCoffroad
@DBCoffroad Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! This is just a real world example of what the reality of supercharging an already heavily modded 4Runner looks like. So in that case, it’s very accurate. I made a previous video showing the Dyno on a stock engine with all the same mods. And then did the exact same circumstances (minus outside temp) for the supercharged engine. It’s as apples to apples as you can get for an already modified 4Runner. The main point that I wanted to get across is that the supercharger is expensive for what you get.
