I am a Gamer and I have found that most games will run great with Protonup QT and Proton GE on Linux. Some games wont run, not the fault of the operating system but because of certain game developers refusing to optimize their anti-cheat software to run on Linux. Now with Nvidia supporting Linux with proprietary drivers, things are looking good for Linux gaming.

I'm a Windows 10 user who recently tried out Linux Mint and also Zorin. Two years ago, I had problems with Linux Mint not automatically installing things like drivers for my USB ethernet adapter and the Brave browser. I had to use Terminal, which is a lot like going back to MS-DOS and typing in various commands on the command line. Not my cup of tea! However, I recently tried out the latest version of Zorin, and it automatically installed everything, including the ethernet adapter and the Brave browser. I'm still using Win10 as my main OS because I like it just fine, but all the stuff Microsoft is doing lately with Windows 11 and their intrusive Copilot and even more intrusive Recall feature is making me think I will have to switch to Zorin in the next year or so. Thanks, Liron, for a very timely guide to doing so.

Brave is an odd case where they don't provide a .deb or AppImage on their website. You might be able to find Brave in the Linux Mint Software Manager. Their installation instructions for Linux are atypical in my experience. Drivers are included in the Linux kernel. What probably happened was your Linux Mint installation image didn't have the latest kernel that had your USB ethernet adapter's driver in it whereas Zorin's did. Also "Install 3rd party drivers" may have left unchecked during your Mint install. Checking it on can fix some of those issues.

@techguydilan
@techguydilan 23 күн бұрын
The issue is that there's no singular way to do it, it really depends on what app, if it has dependencies that a library like WINE can use or replicate, and so on and so forth. There is the virtualization route that works better in most cases, by installing actual Windows in a VM then running software inside of that. Issue is that some software vendors, especially game publishers, are banning people for doing so using their anticheat systems. Also heard of Adobe doing so as well.

I remember Liron hosted a poll on youtube about which windows people were using, and if they wanted to upgrade to windows 11 - and one of the answers to that was :"I'm on linux, because I'm better than you" in the poll. So in Lirons mind, at that time, linux users were full of themselves. Based on his content at that time, it did feel like he didn't take linux seriously, but there's been a change in the tune. Probably because of all of the things microsoft has been doing lately. Lots of older machines unable to use windows 11. Ai pointlessness showed into your face. More and more ads put into the OS. Linux is objectively becoming the superior operating system, and people are waking up.

I'd obvious prefer a more comfortable and seamless transition to something as close to Windows XP/7/10 as possible, without the loss of features and functionality that I use throughout the day, something that's at least as secure, and something compatible with all of my precious files and games. This look into Zorin looked VERY promising on most of these fronts. Thank you again!

Nicely done! I really hope this encourages anyone considering making the switch to go ahead and try. Both Zorin and Mint are fantastic for new Linux users who are accustomed to the Windows environment. I've been on Linux Mint for just under two years and cannot imagine using anything else. Linux, in my experience, is *virtually* stress free. It tends to be much faster than Windows, and not nearly as buggy as it used to be, with far less time screwing with the Terminal. As for gaming,... it's come a long way. Utilitarian programs that most people use tend to be ported to Linux, but that tends to come with popularity. The same applies to games. There's a good chance your favorite game will work on Linux if it's popular. If not, there's still a fair chance you can run it in Wine, or Steam's Proton. I've had very few issues running things in Linux with a few exceptions like Filmora which crashes through emulation. Some games like Minecraft work perfectly as it was actually built in Linux.

The developers of the software can help you get to the bottom of your issue. They're computer geeks so if it's your computer causing the crash they'll probably figure that out. Geeks gonna geek. When you contact them they may ask you to do some strange things so they can get more information. But they should walk you through that. They appreciate when people reach out. At least that's been my experience. I have literally gotten software patches in an hour. I can't promise that happens every time. But I can say it's happened for me. Good video. I would add: If you primarily use your computer to get online and do basic work processing, etc, there is no reason not to switch to Linux. Do NOT spend one more penny on a Windows machine if you're in that category. Keep in mind, Mac is Linux at it's base and Windows is transitioning to Linux at it's core so you are going to go to Linux at some point whether you like it or not. IF you use a computer instead of a cell or tablet that is. Some points... Linux does not use drive letters and Windows does. This can cause an issue seeing a Windows machine from Linux on you local network. From Windows to Linux, you can use Samba and it works great. Another: printers, usually older printers, can be painful on Linux. Generally, newer printers work fine. If you can't understand Linux, ask your 4 year old grand daughter how to do it. She'll explain it... That's the world we live in and I love it.

Pop a live Linux distro on a USB stick, boot it up and give it a go. You may well find that there are Linux equivalents to the software you've paid for, that come pre-installed, that work just as well for you. Or you might find that you can run that software that you've invested so much money into just fine on Linux under Wine or Proton or Bottles (which are all the same thing, just packaged differently.) Something I've learned to help minimise any issues that may occur on updates is to wait about a week or so before installing. Usually I do this when I new kernal comes a long. Have had about 2 or 3 times in about 5 years a kernal cause issues. I'm not a techie so it can be a headache. Usually for me just quicker to reinstall/use Time shift, than having to try figure it out. Just waiting a week seems to cut down on the number of wonky updates. As fixes usually come pretty quickly.

The other thing that's rarely mentioned is you can safely create a bootable linux USB and try linux without altering your computer (when you reboot, it's unchanged unless you specifically install it). It's not like Windows where you must install it to use it.

Honestly it depends on ones use case. For DaVinci resolve and VMs with an Intel iGPU remain in X11. Wayland isn't quite ready for primetime; albeit quicker. I've had 4 broken installs in recent weeks.

On my windows, i use win10 ltsc. Even without the store, i am able to install icloud and publisher-native apps like from facebook (messenger). For my dual boot linux, i am testing the waters with LMDE. However i seem to love void linux for my graphics accelerated tear-free desktop rendering -- but at the expense of slow bootup at limited support

For AMD GPU and antegrated GPU - any distro. For NVIDIA GPU - Ubuntu based distros (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mint, Zorin) or Nobara. For gamers and video creators - Nobara. That's all. Some additionals tips: If you like more traditional interface (XP/Vista/W7) - Linux Mint Cinnamon, ZorinOS. If you like Windows 10/11 - Kubuntu, Nobara KDE. Or if you want to try something crazy new - Ubuntu, Nobara Gnome.

As a gamer that uses PopOS your right, it’s not perfect. Although I will say that most of my games are on my Linux and just a small handful on my windows. Linux really has come a long way.

I tried Mandrake/Mandriva, then Kubuntu and finally used PCLinuxOS, I stayed with that distro for 12 years at work and home and my work was very demanding with lots of responsabilities. Never let me down. Even made a remaster for special ed with educational software, I'm from social sciences so it was with help from the forum, best community ever. I'm retired now and in Win 10, see, I think of Windows as a tou OS so I use it mainly for games. Peace.

Just switched to Zorin OS 17 Pro and it is amazing. A bit of a learning curve but use Ventoy for your USB drive and just never look back friend.
