Thank you :) I was feeling really anxious as I’ve decided to take a gap year last September, and seeing all my friends going to uni makes me feel really left behind. But watching this video made me realised that my gap year doesn’t have to be all fancy and travelling, everyone’s pathway is different and I’m glad to have finally found what I’m truly passionate about after these past few months and I’ll be going to uni this coming September :)

Bro, no more further research, you definitely explained everything i have to know. Gap year isn't bad, some people might use it as an abuse, but to me it's an oppurtunity for a lot of people to really take time to find themselves and what they are passionate about. Though it looks a bit risky and I still have to earn money, gap year is healthy and beneficial. I didn't realize i have older friends from church who are actually taking gap year and they're so friendly and open and i just see how they are enjoying life as of the moment. Thanks, i might consider trying gap year/semester when i graduate

Truly Inspirational!! I am in my final semester of Engineering! I switched my major many times which led me to taking 1 class this spring semester - kind of a gap semester. This gap semester helped me to realize that anyone can be ambitious/passionate in whatever they do, if they put their minds into it. Also, the support of great friends can be a catalyst to ones success. "Happiness comes from the passion that you have." 4:40 - I believe in that. Thank you for this great video!

Janice! It's completely okay to not know what you want to do! I think part of my gap year taught me to accept the unknown. Many around you will perceive they know what they want but everyone will feel lost sometimes. It's 100% okay to feel that way. If you want to travel, take the steps to backpack :) If you want to learn a new skill, there's so many free resources online to get started :) best wishes!

@itsdawei
@itsdawei 4 жыл бұрын
Glad this was helpful! My parents were certainly concerned given that I am doing something "not normal." One thing that can help yourself take that decision is to write out a plan of your gap year and what you hope to achieve. When writing those steps out, you not only find more clarity and confidence in your decision but also can send that plan to the school to request a gap semester and to your parent to show the approval and support from your school.

GREAT ADVICE! This video diffidently impacted my decision to take a gap year. I am a senior in high school, and I missed a lot of deadlines for college, but I am a great student; I am in dual enrollment and was just too caught up in work! So my question to you is that since I missed many deadlines for my top choices, I can still apply to a few colleges (but I feel as if it would be rushed), should I? I want to take a gap year, but I don't know how that will affect my chances of getting grants and scholarships!
@itsdawei
@itsdawei 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if the gap year will affect certain college or scholarship's acceptance but coming from a life's perspective, you will be successful either way as long as you work hard. With regards to the specifics, you should reach out to the specific schools and scholarships to see if they have more guidance on gap years and how you can apply next year. Best luck!

I am a little older than people in this comment section. But I graduated in 2017, pressure to getting my degree in city college at 21(switching majors a lot), and forced into university right away. I failed, several times because of not knowing who I was or what I wanted to be. Now that I’m alone and on my own I feel like it’s time to finally take the gap year I always wanted. I took a semester off thinking it was enough but still burnt myself out on the side. I am finally FINALLY trying this gap year the right way. I’m going to be 23 years old. There is NO rush into figuring out what you want to do in college. I feel like if I waited another semester I’d be way happier where I was. Don’t push yourself into thinking life is just college. I lost myself greatly because of that and made it my whole persona. I love college and will go back, but that’s future me. Worry about the present and take care of yourself. No rush. Thanks for the video. 🤍

Hmm. Is it a valid story to be in a gap year currently with the perspective of “taking a break”? I graduated from high school during the summer of 2020 and so far it has been pretty uneventful though I have spent plenty of time, in early dawn, walking around the neighborhood and just thinking. I would have been vulnerably unprepared on many topics had I rushed for college admission through the intense uncertainty I lived through during my senior year. I suppose I can point out that my high school days detrimentally damaged my happiness and hope for any future and as I was visited by several suicidal attempts as well as a lack of excitement for my life by clinical depression. But during the fall of 2020 I discovered I was on the spectrum, which was valuable since it practically validates my particular perspective of the world, and I have become inclined to consider that attribute in deciding what to do with my life. I am not sure what way to finish this comment, though due to the current situation and a lack of resources on my end I am not running through the ‘sparkling’ experience of what a glamorized gap year ‘should’ be. I was able to abandon and wash away a message, which I was previously convinced of by the culture of my high school, that attending a prestigious school or place defines my soul. Simply wandering around in solitary confinement during this unique time has made me acknowledge all my cripplingly lonely years and the need to readily teach myself happiness and a drive for vocation through my college journey. If any of what I described legitimately counts as something valuable then I would be rejuvenated from sporadic and intense discouragement I currently endure out of comparing the online narrative concerning “the gap year” and my own take with this year. I feel the scrutinizing eyes of the world and am feeling somewhat ashamed at what looks like a ‘wasted’ year. But I know that somehow my 2021 self is not the same as my 2020 self. Thank you.

Hi there! This video was very helpful! I graduated high school in spring 2021 and am fully committed to Montana State in the fall but am now having second thoughts if that’s really the school I want to go to or if I should even go to school this fall. If I did take a gap year how would I make sure it doesn’t turn into me being “lazy” and having an average day to day routine? If I did take one, I would want to make the most out of that year but I’m not sure how I would go about this. What do you recommend?

For me, I had a venture during my gap year so it's one of my most hardworking years as I over compensated for doing something different than my peers who were at school. I worked 12 hours work days during those 2 gap years. I would say create a daily/monthly agendas on goals/tasks you want to achieve. I do that everyday still :)

Thank you so much for this very informative video! I am currently a college student in my second semester, but I'm considering taking a gap year or gap semester after this first year. After the first semester of studying biomedical sciences, I realized that I actually want to study animation/illustration after all. I wanted to study art before, but I was convinced that I wouldn't be able to make money out of it. However, I know that this isn't true anymore. If I work really hard for something that I'm passionate about, I believe that I'll be able to earn money from it. I have learned a lot about myself and met a lot of amazing people at college, so I don't think it was a complete waste of time. However, I do still regret that it took me this long to figure out how much I want to study art. I am going to apply for art school either in Spring 2023 or Fall 2023, which means that I will need to take 1-2 semesters off. I was worried that I might wasted my time or that it would be really bad to delay my graduation from college like that, but your video shows me that I can even earn some money while exploring my passion! The hardest first step for me will be to convince my parents to support me in pursuing an artistic career. I'll try my best to put together a presentation to show them why and how I can become a professional artist :)

Since the field I want to study is well... rather difficult and requires a lot of hard work, I’ve seriously been considering taking a gap year so I can work on myself and allow myself to rest.My biggest fear tho is that my parents might not support the idea and I’m terrified to even bring it up to them. Hi Ayanna! I think the key here is to stop comparing yourself with peers but focus on self growth. We all get lost in comparing ourselves relatively to our surrounding, whether it be class mates or siblings or family members or friends. It's easy to lose sight what's important in life - your life. Stay healthy and stay blessed!

I'm always a proponent of gap year if you haven't taken any time out of academic pursuits. You can always write to your Dean's office to request a gap semester. The whole point of the gap year is for you to see different perspectives or take a break and understand that you're in no rush or timeline.

I'm thinking that after I finish my A Levels next year, I'm going to have a gap year, in which I will try to work as much as possible, travel, see my friends, and decide what initial path I want to take. Does this sound like a good idea? I know that it's my choice, but it really is something that I get overly stressed about, and I feel like I should just take a "moment" to breathe. - B
