This is a fun little discussion on the pros and cons of taking an herbalism course versus trying to piece your herbal education from random sources online and in books. Both are doable! Find out my thoughts on ways to become an herbalist as well as some considerations for those who feel herbal education should be "free." The fact is, there is no "free." You're going to pay either with your time, your dollars, both, or none....in which case you won't learn a thing. I'd love to know what you think! Leave comments!

Heidi is one of the best teachers that I have ever studied with. You will not regret joining the school. We have a special group, to me family/community. I started with Ditch The Drugstore, which helped me start an apothecary for my family and close friends and then The Confident Herbalist Tribe better known as the Tribe. The group is very active and helpful and safe to ask questions. The Tribe deep dives into herbs in ways that help you understand them better. I did research schools and God led me to this group. Thank you Heidi and Joe for all that you do for us. ❤

I can say YES … you should take an herbalism course . In the past yr and half I have committed to studying more ways to learn all that is available at our fingertips, literally . All you need to do is walk outside your door and into nature and the classroom has come alive . I now have the knowledge to help my family , including my young grandkids get relief when they have a a cold or virus or earache etc and know that what I am making them does not have serious side effects like the ones that can come with pharmaceuticals. Also , the kids can get involved and learn these valuable skills to support their health as they grow . For one thing Herbal courses and the knowledge , Is empowering , and great to be able to help others who are searching for a more natural lifestyle . And I am a pro Heidi supporter and student of HHH… so many valuable lessons and other members to help along the way . Heidi teaches from her heart and has a wealth of knowledge from being immersed in studies of herbalism for more than 20 +yrs . So , yes .., take a class and fall in love with nature ..and Gods classroom …and learn how to help yourself live a better ,healthier lifestyle .

I completely agree! I’ve waited so long (I’m 59) to begin this herbalism education. I need a faster track than simply perusing the internet and reading random books on the subject. I am doing those things but I am also taking classes. For those of you who haven’t looked at Heidi’s school, I would recommend taking a look. The classes are very reasonably priced and include TONS of information. If you are a believer (Christian) you can safely study and not worry about getting into things Christians shouldn’t be involved in. Thank you, Heidi for sharing your knowledge with us! ❤

I've been dabbling in herbs and eo's for about 10 years now. Mostly just for myself and my family. There was a period of time that I was looking for a course I could take. But most of them were associated with another religion or the occult. More recently I've been getting your newsletter (for a year or more now). With this last newsletter I decided to check out your KZfaq channel. I'm so glad I found a Christian herbalist!

Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge with us Heidi. I’m 67, retired 3 years ago from a 25 year RN career. I’ve been watching your videos ( as well as Rain County) for the last year. I’ve been gardening for 25 yrs as well, and am also a beekeeper. You’ve inspired me to to CONTINUE learning in my retirement chapter of life! I have added a medicinal herb garden and have been able to harvest from my own garden making herbal teas, salve’s, and now working on tinctures as well. God bless you for helping others to LEARN - how to help others! 🙌🙏🏻

I have studied with you for 4 years and have learned a wealth of safe, and dependable knowledge about herbs, medicinal plants and essential oils. I know who it is that is blasting teachers like you. Her big saying is "your smart enough to do it" I wish people like her wouldn't simplify herbal medicine to that degree, people can get hurt that way. But hopefully people are smart enough to find a good teacher with real credentials to follow. Like you.😊

Yes, I think taking herbalism so lightly can be quite dangerous, and I know this from working with thousands of students and clients....some of them with serious interactions. Not addressing this is truly irresponsible. In my opinion, of course.

I was wondering if Heidi would be in touch with you with the info I gave her. LOL The person I spoke to her about grew up in Herbalism, both her grandmas were herbalists. What she said, is she does not believe she should charge for her knowledge. She is not whimsical, and goes into great depth on the Herbs she uses, and there are a lot. She actually agrees with main stream Herbalists like yourself on some things, but disagrees on other things and explains why. Have a good day.

I absolutely love my first teacher, who is a woman who learned from her grandmother, and that knowledge came from generations past, too! It's so amazing, this gift of the herbs we can give to our children and grandchildren...the legacy we can leave. BUT the fact remains, knowledge shifts and changes over the years as science and researchers conduct studies. However, I personally prefer first turning to TRADITIONAL use, the follow that knowledge up with clinical studies...then I can make a truly informed decision. And many times intuition plays a huge part in this, too.

it's very hard moving from western to eastern type medicine. it is truly the way to go! it's a bit challenging to get started. i'm trying to set up an apothecary and it's overwhelming. finding herbs because i can't grow my own. getting enough supplies--jars, herbs, accessories, pans, etc is a process. using herbs can be wasted if the individual isn't willing to try and/or go the long term. i don't have "physical" mentors or community; it's all on line. i print almost everything out so that i have it at my "fingertips." your courses are exciting and full of honest information. i enjoy your information!

And another thing, all the herbalists I watch on youtube have free videos to watch. Some herbalists on youtube take the time to create course work for people to purchase to learn more methodically. Other herbalists on youtube share their knowledge "freely" and also ask their subscribers to consider supporting them financially so they can teach "freely." Either way, the subscriber has a choice on how they want to spend their money. And if an herbalist has written a book, from what I've experienced so far, you have to buy the book. So why is paying for a book o.k.but paying for a course an issue? Both are intellectual property by the creator. If you create a worthwhile product you deserve to be compensated for your work. Nuff said.

When you start crafting herbal medicine being self taught you will eventually run into a wall. This wall is when you can't find the answers in youtube videos and the reference books you buy. Like, should I try to strain off the cloudy stuff (inulin?) in my rose hip tincture? Or is that part of the medicine? Hawthorn tincture is loaded with pectin. So your alcohol hydrometer won't read accurately because of the tinctures viscosity etc. Then you have to join a live chat and hope the host reads your question so you know what to do. In the past learning an important craft one could become an apprentice. Work for free to learn the skills needed to perform the craft. Today if you want to learn a craft you can look for apprentice opportunities or pay to take a course. Either way the skills being taught are not "free." I hope to take a course soon, until then, learning will be stop and go.

THANK YOU for sharing herbal remedies with us. I really appreciate it. I just read that CVS will be closing some 300 stores, including Target ones. On top of that, when Rite Aid bought out Bartell's, they began massively closing those stores as well so now I don't have access to my fave Bartell's or alternatives anymore for the pharmacy and when Rite Aid bought them out the quality of everything went downhill. If they close the CVS I think I'll be limited to Walgreens for a pharmacy (for my state insurance) and I HATE it there. Anyway, I've been doing Keto/Low Carb strictly again and feel AMAZING because I'm getting healthy fats, real foods that were eaten by my ancestors, and doing my best to stay away from processed foods (except this one organic keto cereal and low carb tortillas I found). Today, my throat is feeling a little sore and I have all my teas and spices and loose leaf herbs like chamomile, lavender, thyme, oregano, mint (I have mint teas plus some mint I have hanging to dry -- hang drying basil, mint, rosemary, sage, and thyme at the moment), rosehips, and a host of other spices and herbs a mixture of powder as well as whole, some both (because I like making Moles, curries, etc). Since I'd last spoken to you, I'd been using my foodstamps to stock up each month on teas, herbs, and spices that are organic so that I can have them for support. I also bought, in addition to the one herb loose leaf, some teas blends that are loose leaf as well as some pre-packaged teas that are blends. I've sometimes been like, "I want some tea", and then am like "NO. Its for medicine". And then have it when I need it, but I do have some teas set aside for everyday if I want it, but mostly drink coffee. All these pharmacies shutting down have me worried. I also don't have honey this month but next month when I get my EBT food stamps renewed I'm going to purchase some, but I do have some cough drops if I get sick again. Cough drops are the one thing I've not learned how to make yet and just honey with herbs didn't help in August or September when I got super sick and my throat was on fire. I recovered QUICK from herbal remedies I'd been learning and putting to actual use, however my throat was on fire and the honey and mint and garlic and ginger and all that helped a lot but also didn't help fully. I still turned to Vicks as well for my chest at one point since I don't have any beeswax to make another salve. Next month I'm going to hopefully be able to find some beeswax that I can use my EBT/foodstamps on (didn't see any this time), strain for the honey and add that to a jar and then render down the beeswax to make a salve. I know doing that won't give me much beeswax, but it gave me enough last time for a salve. I'm going to also hopefully be able to find an inexpensive quality pure essential oil that I can use for my lotions and diffuser, I have a few dollars and sometimes there's this one store that they're on sale but I don't always have the money so am hoping this works out. Its really weird also that I keep hearing about "Disease X" (trended on Twitter/X yesterday) and now CVS is going to be closing massive amounts of pharmacies? Weird coincidence. I don't believe in coincidence. I'd been slacking off on my learning via Herbalism. Its been a hobby, but I became distracted and procrastinated. This massive pharmacy closure though has me ready to go back to checking books out of the library again and continue adding information to my notebook as well as trying out remedies myself as I can to adjust for my biology. I don't do tinctures as I don't consume alcohol and also can't afford it, but I can at least learn the uses of the herbs and tisanes.
