Exactly right, Marissa! I am 65 and just did the Pacific Coast drive last year! When I saw your picture of Bixby Bridge… Had my picture taken there too! The cliffs! The seals! The lighthouses! The beaches! Morro Rock! The cute restaurants! The donuts! Yep! I’d do it again in a minute - only this time in a convertible! 😂😂😂

Native Californian here. It’s always fun for me to hear non-locals try & pronounce our places (this is probably true anywhere!) It’s likely been pointed out already, but we call it car-MEL (🚗 + man’s name, with emphasis on MEL). Last time I drove Hwy 1 SF to Santa Barbara was decades ago. Thanks for the reminder that it’s time to go soak in all that natural beauty again 😍 And it’s time to eat more cake! 😂 Wonderful channel…thank you 🙏🏻

My goodness what a beautiful drive and scenery. Breathtaking. I don’t think you short the children in anyway when you spend a day schooling them about history, geography and nature and physically being in attendance. No better way to learn. Keep up the good work and always enjoy your Sunday adventures.

Thank you for sharing. In 1992 my 65 yr old dad and mom took their 30 ft motorhome, towing a car, down US1. Started in Niceville FL, California, Los Vegas then back to FL. Accomplishing his lifelong dream of driving US one and showing it to our mom. She passed away two years later. They also made one more trip up to New York and Canada and saw Niagara Falls from both countries! Dad retired with 30 years in the Air Force as a flight engineer and 10 years civil service. Mom was at home raising five kids. The motorhome also came in handy when we had two flee several times from incoming hurricanes and was great for overflow when all the kids came home to visit. Love following your page.

I lived in Niceville as a kid when my Dad was in the AF at Eglin. Now, we travel in an RV like your parents, mostly to take in 4 wheeling in different states in our Jeep. Having a blast in retirement is what it’s all about! Born in SF, I’ve never driven on Hiway 1. Looks a little scary to me, very afraid of heights. Love your story. Great video, I can experience it through YT. 👏🙂👍God bless!

Back in the day when you didn't need reservations setting you back $50 a night. Back when you could camp right off the highway for free without risking a thousand dollar fine. I would never recommend driving highway 1 theses days

I love your videos in California because it makes me miss my home. My parents lived up up the cliff from Seacliff Beach. My adult children have the best childhood memories going to spend the summers at their grandparents house. They consider Santa Cruz and all of the Monterey bay area even Big Sur as their home. Carmel … Car Mel … not a candy.

One of the best places to live. Came here in 1949 after living in 10 other places east and west. Staying here to my last day. Back in the fifties we could still fish from the cement boat (the Palo Alto) at Seacliff.

You really captured what visiting this stretch of SR-1 is like. When I was a young geologist with Caltrans heavy rains in 1982-83 washed out the highway in many spots between Monterrey and Big Sur. One landslide in Big Sur had the road closed for a year and was the largest landslide repair in state history. Now you can’t even tell where it was… The last time we drove through in our 25 ft class C we stayed at a national forest campground in Big Sur. We ran out of water and the campground’s water was shut off so we had to buy bottled water they were selling at the campground for $5/gal. Most expensive flushes ever. Glad you got to see whales and the elephant seals fight. Amazing! A couple of local notes. Carmel is pronounced 🚘- Mel as in the drive-in. Also, only people from Southern California call it “The” one

Pt Reyes is one of my favorite places to visit even though it can be quite windy at times. It's still gorgeous esp in the spring. I've seen orcas, and I've seen a pod of dolphins pretty close to the shore enjoying the the waves. First time seeing orcas in the wild. Second time seeing dolphins (1st pod tho) as 2 wks earlier I saw 2 dolphins in a cove in Pacific Grove. One thing about pulling off the road in Big Sur is feeling the massive vibration of the surf hitting the rock cliffs. It is awesome and frightening. And the color of the water, amazing. I look forward to the next video adventure!

YES, YES, YES!!!! We did this trip 7 yrs ago in a 36’ Class A motorhome towing a Ford Escape SUV (total length 51’). From Redding to Eureka and then south to Dana Point. It was EPIC, a little tight in a few curves and virtually no RV camping but we managed. Heading from North to South we were on the outside edge with an unobstructed view of the ocean. Probably the best and most epic trip we’ve done in 100,000 + miles of road tripping. Very narrow at times but with patience and careful driving it was the trip of a lifetime.

Did you ride the carousel at Santa Cruz Boardwalk? Very unique! THREE antique coliapies! Did you get to watch the surfers at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz? Seaclif, what a place! In the 1960's, fishing off the Palo Alto concrete ship! Lifetime memories! How awesome was sleeping with the sound of the waves? I think that you have realized that just the Californis coast highway 1 can be a few months of adventure stops, with so very much to explore. Yes, California has many state parks! Gotta love that Big Sur hair! HAHAHA! Will you stop at San Simeon? Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, the Madonna Inn? Cool Hand Luke's, Santa Maria steakhouse? Staying tuned for the next episode!

I recall driving south of San Francisco on hwy 1 and coming across a park dedicated to hang gliders. It was a cliff maybe 200' above the sea and the updrafts were perfect for hang gliding. Since the hang gliders went back and forth riding the updrafts, they were about 20' over my head where you could almost talk to them. So cool. I thought it was funny that there was a fence on three sides, but the fourth side was over the cliff and wide open. Fort Funston?

"Oh it'll all get eaten...that's the problem". I agree with Nathan. I think its time for some dessert counseling. I'll probably have to join you. Thanks for sharing the travels...maybe next time share some cake with us too. :) Safe travels!

Yippee you all are in my stomping grounds!! I have lived in California all my life from Ventura to Cambria and many places in-between. The 1 is no joke in an RV for sure you can touch your back end on some of the curves! It's really nice on a Motorcycle though

We just got home from there, we live in San Diego, drove to Cambria, stayed for 6 nites, did many day trips around the area. Did a 12 hour round trip to Carmel pronounced “Car- Mel “ and back to Cambria, saw many of the same sites. Did Hearst castle, Morro Bay, San Simeon pier and seals. Beautiful area!!

Hi All, Thank you for your wonderful video! We camped at the Big Sur private campground b/c one whole loop was closed at Big Sur, and the others had no water. The campground owner had to guide us to our spot on the Big Sur river, w/ a grand redwood right outside our camper door. I think we used a crowbar to get out of the campground when we left, tightest campsites we had ever seen. We went to the beach where the keyhole is and went swimming, and everybody looked at us as though we were nutso. Was it cold, sure, had we driven all of the way from Texas - yes. We are at the Pacific, we're going in!! Yes, Bixby bridge has been in a LOT of movies, car commercials and probably other commercials. Safe Journeys!

Car-Mel, emphasis on Mel. After the cake overload you need to hit up Pie Junkie in Oklahoma City! I made a special detour on my way to Indiana from California and was NOT disappointed! 😉

I want to be one of your children in my next life! You are a beautiful family and they are so lucky to see all the sights at their young ages, I haven't seen many of them - except thru your eyes. Thanks for taking us along, I live in San Diego and haven't driven the entire coast, did go down the 1 from Monterey and did the 17-mile drive. I agree - spectacular is all I can say about our beautiful state. Glad you're enjoying it. And it's CarmEL =- like an "L" say it like CAR and the name MEL!!!!!!! Did you see Clint Eastwood? He is - or used to be - the mayor there!

Enjoyed this video. 7 years ago, my cousin and I rode bicycles from Monterey to Santa Barbara in 5 days. Stayed the first night at the River Inn. Enjoyed Bixby bridge, Julia Pfiefer park, Morro Rock , etc. I would not try to take my 5th wheel down that road, however. Happy traveling.

So glad you were able to get a spot at Seacliff and not even one of the lottery spots. True beach camping is so wonderful. Wish we had been home (Santa Cruz native, we met in Yosemite) to have you over for dinner, but we were on our way to the Dakotas. Safe travels!

Yep, we took our 32' Class A down Hwy 1 in 2020 during the year of Covid. We went southbound on Hwy1. My wife didn't do so well, since she was on the cliff side. Hah! It was fine, no problems. Bixby bridge was iconic.

I’ve been to the River Inn. Hiked up one of the trails at the state park. Was so hot and thirsty we ordered 1 pitcher of water, 1 pitcher of Coke, and 1 pitcher of beer! And you put the emphasis on the 2nd syllable in Carmel: car-MEL.
