Should you tape your mouth for mouth breathing at night to get better sleep? If you have nasal congestion at night, you can try this home remedy for a stuffy nose. If you snore at night or if snoring bothers your bed partner, this could be a sign of sleep apnea. I explain how mouth taping can help with sleep apnea symptoms somewhat in people with mild OSA.

I had a stuffy nose and was a mouth breather with snoring and apnea. I was a regular user of nasal sprays. After reading the book "Breathe" (James Nestor), three years ago, I tried mouth taping instead. I would tape my mouth in bed and then struggle to breathe through my nose. Remarkably, if I persisted for just a few minutes, my nose would clear - every time. This is the "use it or lose it" phenomena, expressed in the book. Mouth taping has changed my life, though better sleep.

I taped my mouth (horizontally due to my beard) for the first time last night and I slept 7 hours straight. I am 78 and usually sleep for 4 - 5 hours and often have to urinate during that period. I have to limit my water consumption to about 35 ounces during the day to avoid nocturnal urination. I can't remember a night when my sleep quality was so restful and void of dreams and I usually snore loudly for about 30 minutes according to the SnoreLab app on my cell phone. I used bandaid tape. It stuck all night and I pulled it off without a problem. Thank you Dr. Park!!!

I will say this here probably help others. You arrived Dr. to the same conclusion I did. I have severe sleep apnea 44 index without CPAP, I was using full mask, my index was between 3 and 4. I start to do taping "but allow me in emergency cough, I mean I put 3 strips of soft tapes to keep my lips close. the Index improved and my nitric oxide production too. "this is good for improve sexual performance" my index was around 1 and 2. I changed the full mask to nasal pillow mask, and learn how to obstruct the air coming from my nose to my mouth avoiding the chipmunk cheeks, and now my Sleep apnea index is by average 0.3 to 0.8. I think they advise to not use tape, because some people put dangerous tapes "strong ones". but yes, my own NHS told me not to use. but I improved a lot using it, I check my self "I learned" read my CPAP graphs etc. plus with full mask my pressure was between 5 to 15.6 in APAP mode. Now with nasal pillow mask. my pressure in the CPAP is fixed to 4 and obtain index of 03. to 0.8 People drop the therapy, too much pressure with full masks. and in automatic mode. go from 4 to 20 and change up and down the pressures. that is not good. the CPAP software is not so smart to adjust. so you need to do it yourself and learn read the graphs. now, I am in the family the only one can be awake for longs hours lol. Now I have a lot dreams. like when I was teenager. I am 50 years old. This save lives. I am so happy now.

I've been on CPAP for about 6 months and tried a chin strap due to mouth leak issues. I found the air pressure (10 to 12 cm H2O with VPAP) could still make its way through my closed lips and I'd wake up due to the feeling of the air escaping through my mouth. Additionally, some chin straps put backwards pressure on the mandible, which can cause further restriction to the airway. I started using Cover Roll Stretch tape as recommended in several of TheLankyLefty27 channel's videos and it solved my mouth leak issues.

Works great. Nose is for breathing. Mouth is for eating and speaking. The nose acts as a filter and serves no other purpose. Smell is a sense. A plethora of issues can evolve from improper breathing, everything from oral issues, to Inflamation, digestive issues, skin issues, blood pressure, and cognitive. I taped my mouth for the first time last night and slept great. The goal is to do it for a couple weeks until my body is subconsciously trained to breath this way.

I started taping my mouth because dry mouth was so bad. I later was prescribed a CPAP and it could weld my mouth together forcing me to drip water in to release. I started using a 2" medical plastic tape and had moisture build up. I switched a 2" paper tape and did not build up too much moisture. I have to tape my mouth along the length of my lips or my lips will actually flap to release air. I think I will add the nose/chin direction to control my chin drop to let me sleep on my back. Thanks!

My Buteyko breathing instructor, for asthma, explained how to use mouth taping in addition to exercises to retrain my breathing. That was years ago. I have very little asthma and although I keep a rescue puffer, I haven’t needed it since I retrained my breathing to be slow, deeper, diaphragmatic breathing. Breathing through the nose, day and night, helps breathing, too. Also, I don’t wake up with dry mouth. I tape horizontally and make tabs on both ends of the tape. I also use a mouth guard at night.

I use masking tape in an x across the mouth. If i have congestion, I pull & tape back the skin tightly on either side of the nose which improves breathing. Family members tell me I have apnea. I find it odd that if I have it, why did not one nurse or nursing assistant mention it when I was in the hospital for 4 months? Many observed me sleeping. I do believe the high blood pressure and consequent head aches are caused by my sleeping. It improved greatly after sinus surgery 20yrs ago, but has returned inspite of everything being structurally ok. This does seem to work with the tape.

Doc, I been doing the vertical taping for 2 years. I started doing it after my cva. I had to figure out why I was still feeling tired during the day and why my mouth was bone dry. I discovered my mouth would open up while sleeping with a nasal pillow. Instead of the air from the cpap going to my lungs , it was going out my mouth thus explaining the very dry mouth. If no air going to my lungs then I'm literally suffocating. The technique really works and confirms for me that taping my lips along with nasal pillow really helps. Maybe it could of prevented me from having cva that caused permanent disability and can no longer work as a medical professional. Sadly I had to figure this out on my own.

Tried vertical tape, woke up with air blasting out the sides of my mouth. Since then, a single horizontal piece covering the entire mouth opening seems to work. I find rolling my lips inside as if preparing to blow into a trumpet works well. As noted in the video, I can still open my jaw and APAP air does sneaks into my mouth now and then, but I can easily push it back if I'm awake. Not sure what happens during sleep. I may emulate Dizzy Gillespie. I try to de-stick the tape before using it so that I can open my mouth without my hands, which reduces anxiety and makes it easier to fall asleep. Why do some doctors object to mouth taping? What are the "risks?"
@karenflynn6589
@karenflynn6589 Жыл бұрын
I don't recommend mouth taping, especially if a person has gastric reflux issues, or goes to sleep under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Aspiration of gastric fluids is a big risk for these people. Worst case scenario is NOT an inability to keep your mouth closed, it's actually inhaling what gets regurgitated, resulting in pneumonia or choking to death. I teach patients how to keep their mouth closed while using CPAP. I have had patients with severe structural defects in their face, who are dedicated mouth-breathers, and they are able to keep their mouth closed all night, even on the first night of CPAP use.

@doctorstevenpark
@doctorstevenpark 7 ай бұрын
There's no obvious danger to using these rubs, but it's been shown that it doesn't actually increase air flow. Rather, it changes the air temperature sensation so that it feels cooler, making you think that you're getting more air flow. Perhaps try nasal saline irrigation, some of the natural supplements I mention, vitamin D, essential oils, nasal dilator strips, or internal cones or stents. Did you go through all the conservative sleep hygiene steps I mentioned? Try mouth taping only after you're comfortable breathing through your nose. Good luck!

@doctorstevenpark
@doctorstevenpark 10 ай бұрын
I talk about this in the video in more detail, but the short answer is that by keeping your mouth (jaws) closed at night, you have less breathing obstructions at night. Whenever you stop breathing, the vacuum forces in the chest cavity stretches the heart (thinking you're fluid overloaded), which makes a hormone called atrial natriuretic peptide, which causes your kidneys to pee out more urine. Less obstructions also lead to less reflux into the nose, so less stuffiness. Great to hear you're sleeping better!

I tried this, but I woke up unable to breath every time, panicking and ripping it off. My nose is always clogged at least some of the night, and this does not help it for me sadly.

Since taping my mouth, I've struggled with a new problem. My nasal pillow mask blows air into my nose and my mouth blows up like a balloon. (Picture Dizzy Gillespie cheeks) Not sure what to do. It's uncomfortable and wakes me up

You can use a full face mask or stop using CPAP if the root cause is your mouth breathing, what kind of sleep apnea do you have?

I tried taping my mouth for a few weeks. But i keep having kinky weird sexual dreams and kidnapping dreams and crazy animal dreams. Go figure.

Those dreams could be because you're getting really good sleep now. Vivid dreams can be the byproduct of deep sleep.

interesting ... one of the benefits for me of mouth taping is *cessation* of the crazy disjointed scary dreams. I know when I'm not breathing properly, and am not sleeping deeply, when I have these terrible crazy nightmare dreams - taping my mouth, and therefore breathing properly through my nose, allows me to sleep deeply through the night without getting up every hour to drink water, or to pee, and I do not have the crazy horrible dreams. I've been using mouth tape for about 3 years and it has been life-changing for me.

So I can not breath out of my nose. I’m about to go to sleep. Should I not try this?

You may have what's called expiratory palatal obstruction, where the soft palate suddenly blocks nasal airflow while you breathe out. I will be doing a video about this shortly, but in the meantime, search for expiratory palatal obstruction on my website at doctorstevenpark.com.

I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT THAT, this will not work for me, As I have congested at certain nights, I think I would suffocate by taping my mouth and most likely have some sort of a heart attack.

This is dangerous. After using mouth tape for a week , you will feel pain inside your chest continuously.

that may have happened for you, but I promise you that is not universal. no chest pain here, and I sleep WAY better and more deeply by taping the mouth shut and breathing through the nose.

Here's my 2 cents. I breathe trough my nose, my wife doesn't and I checked what I do. I do create a vacuum in my mouth that locks my lips shut. The tongue, the inside cheeks, jaws, lips, stay slightly under a vacuum keeping it tighter. Good luck if it helps.
