The Nike Mercurial series has been the gold standard in the "speed" category for over 20 years now, so whenever a new model drops, expectations are always high! Given how much new tech went into to last years boots, most notably Nike's Air Zoom cushion, to say the least, the bar has been set pretty high! This of course begs the question, should you upgrade to the new model?

I think new boots should be made every 4 years since we hit a limit on boot progress there is no new innovation. It’s not like microchips every 24 months we get a real hardware improvement. We have not found or made new composites or materials to improve boots.

They should make flyknit the “premium” exclusive option for the mercurial superfly line and vapor exclusive to teijin synthetic.

Might be a controversial opinion have the Superfly 10 DF and Superfly 10 low with the Flyknit/grip knot uppers while the Vapor 16 features a Teijin synthetic

I just buy top end boots on ebay a couple years after theyve been replaced by newer models . Got some Puma Ultra 1.4s for $25 and love them my back up pairs are OG Hypervenoms and Mizuno Morelia Beta 2s . Spent under $100 for each

You know what? There’s been people with either wider feet or ticker bone structure on the top foot trying to use Mercs and not haven’t the best time. The perforated material for the laces area would allow some extra stretch but unsure by how much. I really hope these are a nice upgrade as I haven’t been a fan of the Plastic-like feeling of the last couple of mercs

I absolutely love this silhouette of the merc but I won’t be buying these because I have thin feet and I hate dead space in the midfoot which these will definitely have because of the last they went with. It’s super annoying for me with a skinny foot but it’s amazing for those with wide and thicker feet who’ve never had the option to choose a merc due to its overall tight fit. It’s a bummer because it’s the only Nike option I would always go for now I’m looking at adidas options from now on.

@@ev1627 If you get to try them at least, would like to hear your thoughts - whether they fit the same or not. Don't think the new perforations should affect our experience but the technique is used to allow for slightly bigger stretch (if your foot forces it) (EDIT: I might be getting the new ones but around August)

I’ve tried the vapor 15 like the pink pair in this video and my mid foot leaves empty space in the passing side of the foot. For example, if I were to receive a pass it would be like the ball touches the material first then a little later I feel the material make contact with my skin. Sometimes there’s no sensation at all which is the worst. It throws me off and it feels super awkward so if Josh says that these new mercs are going to have a less tight wrap to them I’m cooked. I have the foot of a chicken. I need material supporting the entire arch for me to feel satisfied 😂. “Visual” Normal: --> ⚽️ | 🦶 Me: --> ⚽️ | (space ) 🦶

Considering the Mercurial Pro model usually has a similar upper compared to the Elite, how much different do you think this generation Pro model will be conpared to the Elite? I imagine the Pro upper won’t have the Gripknit and Atomknit, but it will still have the Elite’s Flyknit material. Considering it’s a takedown version, this will be a very impressive feature, and could even a better choice for players who would not want too much grip on their Mercurials.

Well if I’m not mistaken the only thing the Superfly 9 pros didn’t have was the zoom unit everything else was the same so I would expect the same from the 10s but only time will tell

The colourways will be my deciding factor if i buy the 15s or the 16s. I like the pink 15s, the blueprint 16s would get too dirty as i play on really muddy pitches. Will wait for the 16 colourways

The shaping of the GX2 is a little more comfortable for my foot type and preferences. I also tend to prefer a more padded feel to the upper. Both are excellent, but quite a bit different in regards to fit and overall feel, despite both offering GripKnit as a feature

Either I got a bad pair or what but the 16’s in my usual size, felt terrible. My feet were screaming to get them off and I have the 15’s in 10.5 and my feet love them. I shouldn’t have to order a half size up for this new generation so idk what is going on but staying with the 15’s.

There’s a big difference between the Speedportal and the Mercs in general, but the Superfly 9 would definitely be the closer comparison in terms of feel

the older vapor 15's are going to be better because the stud pattern is triangular compared to forward chevrons.

Did you break them in? Because I know those are a recent release and boots take a good 2-5 sessions to warm up and soften the upper. If they stay stiff and rigid for an entire season then yea I wouldn’t recommend. I’ve never tried them but I know the feeling of synthetic cleats and some do break in nicely others feel like they never do.

It seems the only improvements or additions is the gripknit and the more distributed sensation of the sole plate and a lesser tight feeling as Josh described.

It’s good it just looks way too simple and stylish like it’s meant to be on a sneaker instead of a sporty and sharp look Nike is known for in the past. The simplistic design Nike goes with can be a hit or a miss.
