Some anglers use straight braid...
Some anglers use braid to a leader...
Some anglers despise braid...
Let's discuss the usage of braid. Braid has benefits and drawbacks for baitcasters and spinning reels. I think there are some real world applications that may cloud the view on braid. We'll discuss all that an more in this video. More importantly...PLEASE COMMENT. We need input from everyone that watches so we can all learn and grow as anglers.
Thanks for watching!!!!

Hi Debo. I personally am a huge fan of using braided line. As a younger angler, i grew up using 6-10lb mono on the few rods i had. Now that I fish on a regular basis, i can say with certainty that the difference in sensitivity between braided line and mono/floro is uncanny. I'm well aware that other factors such as better equipment, the action of the rod, etc. can also effect the sensitivity but the proof is in the pudding. My hook up ratio increased 3 fold when i switched over to braid. I rarely throw mono or floro as main line anymore but I certainly see the advantages of each in specific applications. One thing I couldn't help but touch base on is the discussion of whether bass can see braided line. I also have read many studies in which claim that bass absorb 5 times as much light as the human eye. But is this relevant? Largemouth bass often use monocular vision as opposed to binocular vision, meaning only one eye is focused on a given object. In order to truly focus on an object, the bass would have to use its binocular sight. Because of the way its eyes are placed on its head, this is only possible when an object is directly in front or above the fish. Even so, the object would have to be within a 18 inch or less proximity. Only in certain finesse techniques does a bass truly strike a lure because it was hungry. As you had mentioned, I believe it has a lot more to do with the action of the bait you are throwing rather than its appearance I don't believe that Bass truly understand what they are seeing until they position themselves so that both eyes are peering in the same direction. The strike is instead, a result of the motion its detects on either side of its body. This would make the visibility of braid negligible. Just some food for thought. Great video!

Richard Rebro LOVE THIS COMMENT! Thanks for taking the time to add your point of view. Sensitivity is definitely higher with braid. I need to test it more but I just have confidence with fluoro in CASE they can see it. You make some very valid points though! Thanks for watching my man!

This is a great comment! Bass (most all fish) detect vibrations via the lateral lines on their sides. Water displacement from lure action and movement create vibrations. These cause reaction strikes because they are aggressive. They will also at times visually inspect a lure and have an interest, or not, in following and/or eating it. I'm choosing mostly braid now with a (mono/fluor/hybrid) leader or straight hybrid (fluor coated nylon). This is my way of simplifying the line dilemma. Thanks again Debo for relevant video topics that generate good debate from all levels of anglers!

Great post, as I've always had a love/hate relationship with the 'can they see the braid' discussion. The one point never added(no sleight to you, but the typical studies/arguments) is that they don't possess the brain function to both understand they're seeing braid and learn to avoid it. If you aren't getting bites, its never the lines fault, but the presentation/color of the bait. My biggest counter to people who truly believe 'invisible' line is superior is why do fish in 0 visibility water absolutely hammer lures/bait still? Lateral lines picking up vibrations or a scent trail depending on the species.

2 years later and this comment is still teaching relatively new anglers like myself. It's also nice seeing positive comments with differing opinions. too many people out there that would just straight call DEBO'S Fishing an "Idiot" for having his own opinion. we're all here to learn so i really appreciate this

@Mike Robber That's what it's about man. I used to be the same way on other channels. It's too easy to get caught up and confuse someone for having an opinion online vs someone just calling everyone stupid and wrong because there is a big difference between Opinions and someone claiming FACTS and that goes for everything in this crazy world.

Straight braid for punching/flipping and frogging...braid to leader mono/fluoro for most everything else except my cranking set up, which is straight up mono. The monofilament helps the rod absorb a lot of the shock and force from the fish. Good vid Debo

Great video! I agree completely with you on application. I primarily use braid but I always have flouro and mono on hand if my presentation with the braid isn't correct or I'm fishing clear or pressured waters. I think people blame braid for things that are mainly user error or lack of knowledge on what it's doing to thier bait/lure action. Keep up the great videos, great topics!

I use a braided main line on almost everything. On my casting reels I've found it gives me more options. I'll decide what I'm throwing and tie an appropriate leader. Then I'm only using shorter segments of leader material instead of spooling whole reels- I don't always want 8# flourocarbon, and 15# isn't always best, and sometimes I want mono- but there's really never a time in my experience where it hurts to have the braided main line. Plus, braid offers some real advantages, mainly in the sensitivity department, but I've also found it do be very drag-free and castable (which helps my casting distance) as well as being better behaved (I backlash less). On my spinning reels, I use 10# PowerPro and usually tie on an 8# flourocarbon or copolymer leader. Braid on a spinning reel eliminates all the problems a person might have with a spinning reel- namely line twist and tangles, etc. Braid makes it so easy even a caveman can do it. It's a load off to not have to worry about any of that or spend time trying to unfudge your reel when you could be actively fishing. As for the extra knot, I can see that. I have broken off at the leader knot, but not moreso than I break off at the hook. I tie leaders using the double uni, which is a relatively small and smooth knot that doesn't cut into itself. I also don't have problems casting it, though I also use rods with standard diameter line guides. If I had microguides I'd have to pick a line and use it straight, and I feel like that would be limiting. Knot strength is one of those discussions I hear a lot, but at some point you're going to exceed the strength of your line, and then it doesn't matter. I've had more fish lost cutting themselves off in rocks than I have due to failed line. I had a big blue catfish the other day put his nose right up to the concrete steps at the local dam and thrash until he'd sawed through 40# mono before I could get my hands on him. Could they be smarter than we give them credit for? You know Roland Martin throws a ton of stuff on straight braid? He colors it black with a Sharpie. I guess if your fishing bottom baits and the line is down in the muck and rocks it doesn't matter much either.

Always run braid with either a mono or flouro leader (depending on bait) except straight braid on topwaters. Always treat the braid, running the line through a soft cloth soaked in reel snot, while spooling. If I ever have to replace the braid, I simply remove the leader and run it directly to another reel so the "newer" braid is on top again.

I use straight braid most of the time. Any fishing where I need to pull a fish out of heavy cover like frogging or punching. Plus anywhere that I want that sensitivity to feel a bite like fishing a worm or a jig. Plus, I usually fish from the bank with a medium heavy rod, so I use braid with my square bills and lipless crankbaits too, because it really helps in getting a good hook set. So, whether it is for strength around cover, increasing sensitivity, or getting a good hook set, I just like braid. I sometimes add a flouro leader when I'm getting no bites, and I used to add a leader all the time, but I've just been going straight braid more and more often now (I'm lazy).

I use braid in alot of applications though like you said when fishing heavily pressured areas or when the bite is finicky i will use mono(10 to 12lb). Or even when fishing in very open water with fe wto no snag obstacles i will use 12 to 15lb berkely big game mono. Has very little stretch compared to many ive used which is great for hook sets and getting out of snags. But overall i love using braid. I typically use 30 to 50lbs depending on tge reel and rod set up. Ive recently been using kastking super power braid and i love the castability on many different weight lures. Caught my pb on a weightless 4 inch zoom fluke with 40lb kastking braid on my baitcaster and could easily cast it about 20 to 30yds which is excellent for such heavy line on my ancient phlueger baitcaster.

Turtle Got Baits That's awesome, congrats. Yes, it definitely does help with hooksets. I use 65# braid for frogging and flipping and 30# for spooks and other top water baits. Other than that I've always been a straight mono or fluorocarbon guy. I tried braid to a fluoro leader on my spinning rods for a couple months and I didn't like it. It was weird because I felt like I wasn't feeling bites as well as I was with straight fluoro, despite everyone saying that braid is more sensitive. I ended up thinking that it was because of the fact that braid floats and caused some slack thus making bites harder to detect. I ended up going back to straight fluoro on my spinning setup. Braid for top water and flipping is awesome though! Great video man, you earned a new sub from me

Most of my fishing is catching Bream on a rocky bottom. For this I use a No. 2 hook and a running sinker - which runs right down to the hook. A very simple rig. It has only one knot; where the line ties to the hook. Now, braid . . . I have been told you can't tie braid directly to the hook, that you must have a leader. I have also been told that you can't use the same knots I have been using since I was a sparrow's fart. Braid, I am told, can't keep on the reel for extended periods. I only fish heavily during the winter months. The rods and reels go into storage for the remainder of the year. With mono this has never been a problem. Every 3 or 4 years I replace the line if it needs it. Snyder line sometimes lasts about 6 years. Does braid really have anything to offer the bait fisherman? It seems there are more negatives than positives. That instant, no stretch quality of braid doesn't really count for much with finicky fish on a snaggy bottom. An afterthought. About 45 years ago I did a brief stint in a tackle shop. I remember a guy trying to introduce a new product. It was a fishing line that stretched to about 10x its length. At first glimpse it looked like 120lb mono but apply about 5lbs weight to the line and it stretched out and thinned out. The object of the product was that when used as a leader it would help hook those fish who flee at the first sign of weight on the line. Kind of like a line with a built-in drag. I don't know whether this chap's product ever took off; I think small game fisherman might have a use for it. I mention it only because its stretchy qualities are polar opposites to those of braid. Cheers

braid lasts longer on a reel than mono. basically just use a palomar knot to tie it to a hook. no stretch equals better sensitivity so with light biting fish it actually can help a ton. now on the flip side bream are line shy so you would need a leader.

Tyler Haber yea, I know what you mean. If you get the real limp braids they are far more susceptible to backlash and breaks. I like some that have a little bit of memory, seems to eliminate those issues. I've been using the SuperKast9 and I'm really liking it. More to come on that soon 👍

Yeah backlash is a challenge with braid. I now keep a (sewing) stitch ripper in my tackle bow to pick em out. The small point gets under those tiny loops and causes very little damage to the line and I'm back fishin in just a few minutes.

I’m relatively new to baitcast reels and I’ve seen numerous videos on different lines to use...mono, fluorocarbon, braid, using braid as a backer, using braid as a leader, etc. I’m going to ask a noob question, but I’m pretty sure the answer is personal preference. Which line is best for saltwater fishing?

@craigemery856
@craigemery856 4 жыл бұрын
Make sure when you line your baitcaster that your line is as tight as possible. Thats very important to prevent backlashing/knots when you first spool it up. Use a rag or a glove and hold the braided line 6 to 8 inches from the reel while you are spooling it. That way it's as tight as possible but the braid wont cut your hand. Ive been cut by braid many times and it sucks!! The other most important thing is dont put too much line on it. If your using a heavier line like 35Lb you dont want put as much as you would with like a 10-15 lb. Its an easy mistake to make. I still do and ive been fishing and using braid for a long time now. Also make sure your tension knob is set correctly to the weight of the lure/worm so that it falls slowly EVERY time you switch . Hope that help! Tight Lines buddy!

I use braid on both spinning and bait cast, but I only use like 18lb test. I often fish in a very clear pond with several feet of visibility, so if I feel like it's going to be too visible, I tie on a flouro leader. Backlashing my caster is indeed super annoying though.

Debo I got a confession. I'm a braid guy and use Berkeley vanish for leader line. In the winter I stay away from braid. It freezes much quicker and my hands are lethargic to tie knots to make leaders. Winter time straight fluoro with snaps to change out lures quicker.

I fish with straight braid 40lb moss green. I havent noticed a difference in the amount of fish at all, with the increased sensitivity and strength im actually doing better with braid. When you think about it thought almost all the time bass hit the back of the lure, a predator chasing its prey and I dont think really see the line on moving baits that draw reaction strikes. The moss green color really seems to blend in with the bottom well in Florida where i fish, lots of grass and debris on grass bottom ponds. Braid all the way for me. Havent had an issue with it breaking off after digging in on a hookset though, i might try a different brand debo

I only use braid for soft plastic fishing because as braid has no stretch and I have found it is not really good for bait fishing , when I strike to set the hook the hook gets pulled straight out of the fishes mouth, but with mono there is a bit of stretch and allows the hook to be set without being pulled out, that’s just my thoughts and preference.🎣

Recently picked up fishing. Braided line? Huh? It wasn't a thing in the 80s. Now it's all I have. My mistake was going 60#, thinking it's so cool, strength to thickness why not. Now I do 20 lb for everythin. I subscribed to your channel because, actually- i think much. I am, curious about how/why things work as well as why things are generally done as they are. Left vs right crank, and yeah, how the brake systems work in bait-casters. When the opportunity to trout fish presents, I will probably use monoflour leader and spinning set up with in-line single bladed spinners baits like rooster tails. Floating single hook flies cast via clear floating water filled float bobbers. Sorry, my point is, I never thought about the effect of line vibration transmission. I am willing to bet that mono transfers sound to water more than braid. That I never thought about it prior, is an example of why I invest time watching your videos. Informative, intelligent, and entertaining.
@ansmerek
@ansmerek 6 жыл бұрын
I find more often than not the reason braid gets dug into itself, is due to using way too much power during a hook set. With the razor sharp hooks we have today a gentle, steady sweep of the rod is more than enough to set a hook. If you are having trouble with braid being dug in after a hook set evaluate why you are setting the hook that way in the first place. If a huge fish crushes your bait, you really can't control that.
@DEBOSFishing
@DEBOSFishing 6 жыл бұрын
ansmerek that's a good point. The harder you set it, the more it digs. Braid has less stretch and you usually don't need to set as hard. Braid really digs because it's soft and can be squished. It will almost flatten and dig in. Nylon line doesn't do that as much because it's a Stiff solid strand - one solid piece of material. Thanks for watching man!

I would pretty much say I use braid for all my freshwater predators here in Norway, light 0.10mm braid for perch, and much thicker 0.33 for pike, and I ALWAYS use a wire leader (as almost all the waters around my area have both pike and perch, so even if I target perch I will still get pike strikes) It's just the best bang for buck wise when it comes to high test line, and when spooling a baitcaster I don't want to loose lots of length beacuse of the line having to be way thicker.

Great video, I understand a little more about braid as I'm not a braid user, I use fluoro on everything. I'm wanting to try out braid on my baitcaster and I'm reading that you need a fluorocarbon backer so the braid does not slip on the spool when setting the hook. Right now i have 50lb braid on with no backer and lined really tight but seem to be getting back lashes so is my braid spinning on my spool? Can you do a video on spooling braid or can you give me some tips? Thanks Brian
@DEBOSFishing
@DEBOSFishing 6 жыл бұрын
Brian Onofre it could be related to the backing. I always use really cheap mono backing on all of my baitcasters. You can also take the lure out a little farther than your longest cast and then put a strip of electrical tape on your spool over the line. That way it won't backlash past that. My recommendation would be to set brakes and spool tension all of the way up and start from there gradually loosening the tension and turning down the brakes. Good luck my man!

I have heard people argue visibility a lot when it comes to line, but with moving baits wouldn't the fish know the line is there regardless (i should say they feel something around not know its line)? Wouldn't they be able to sense the line moving water or the vibrations travelling up the line?
@DEBOSFishing

Each line has its place in every anglers arsenal. But what it comes down to is confidence. I know guys that only throw braid others it’s all flouro . I’m lucky enough where I have a set up for different techniques so each rod has line that is meant ( or best suited) for that technique. But if you only have 1 or 2 set ups I’d do braid on my spinning with a flouro leader and a copoly on a casting. That would cover most techniques ( except frogging, need braid for that imo)
@backlashhero5667

Normally I only use braid on my Heavy Baitcaster for Frogging and Punching and around anything with thick cover. On my Med Heavy I like 15 or 20 lb Floro for slower Texas Rigs or Jigs. On my Medium rod, I like to use 12 or 15 lb Mono since I use it for more open water moving baits like Spinners and Crank Baits and also for slow top water like Poppers. I feel like the stretch helps with the treble hooks. However I recently put braid on all of my rods because the waters around my area are always very stained with 2 feet of visibility on even the clearest days so I didnt think that it would make a difference. Maybe its just my imagination, but my success rate seems to have gone down and so has my confidence in Braid being used for all applications in very stained water. I cant help but wonder if there is something about the low vis Braid that the fish can still detect somehow. My they can see it a little better, or maybe the Braid makes more noise. I plan on giving the Braid a fair chance and continue fishing with it throughout the rest of this fall and see how I feel about it once Winter comes around again.
