I wondered why I never felt the need for sunglasses.. Answer: Northern Germany really is a west-wind zone so the sun is almost always in the back when kiting. Whenever we have a few days of eastern winds, I'm annoyed all session long haha. Gonna get some glasses now either way for protection, thanks for the great video!

Dark-lens mirrored swimming goggles intended for open water swimming are probably the best thing to wear for watersports in stronger wind and wave conditions. They provide the same protection as sunglasses, and as they are made of polycarbonate material similar to that of safety glasses (although not tested for the latter), chances of them breaking are extremely small.

I used to practically live on the water when I was younger, windsurf instructor, powerboat instructor, wake board and waterskiing instructor up to the age of 28 and remember burning eyes. Well, by the age 40 I had developed melanoma on my eyelids and had o have wedges removed by surgery. Fingers x all seems okay but I always wear my shades😎.

I am so glad I watched this! I am going to try to get a tether for my glasses to help not lose them when I fall in. My doctor says I have to wear them all the time anyway since my eyes are sensitive to light. They are the type that become sunglasses when needed.

I have spend thousands of dollars on sunglasses for kiteboarding. Lost glasses frames Broken frames stitches on eyebrows nose and cheeks. Not to mention fogging resulting in impaired vision while kiting. If your mowing the lawn or going for a tour sunglasses are fine. When I'm trying stuff and sending it and crashing like waterboy then I leave them in the truck

Great video, thanks. Sunglasses are not a good idea for windsurfing, as you can be hit in the face by boom or mast and break the sunglasses which in turn can cut your face. It happened to me.

"Mascular" Degeneration, only for "strong guys?" J/k, my M-i-L has that, so I'm aware. The macula is the center area of the retina with light sensitive cells responsible for 20/20 & color vision, at the back of your eye. I never knew about surfer's eye, so thanks, great talk 👍😎🤙 Actually, I'm on the hunt for reader sunglasses, the Maui Jim Ho'okipa Readers in blue Hawaiian mirror that I like are always out of stock 😢 my Banyans are in need of replacements ✅

It’s probably a 50/50 split of kiters who wear them be those who don’t at our beach - which is kind of crazy considering the potential long term effects of UV exposure

Wrap around - do you mean cycling, one piece style? I can't find those in the Rheos affiliate link. Thank you so much for this reminder. I've been slack for some years. I often lose lenses on high impacts. The cycling style will fix that. I just thought they'd fog up but worth a shot. On of my ducks just pecked my eye for the 2nd time 😢 I was being kind. They raise up to your height then bang! Faster than your reaction to blink
@OurKiteLife
@OurKiteLife 3 жыл бұрын
For the sporty / wrap around style we were referring to sunglasses like SeaSpecs. Some people love them, but others experience fogging. I personally use Rheos with an attached strap, just like the styles more. Sounds like you need to wear them around your ducks - a peck to the eye sounds super painful!!
@cyberanswer

Oh yes, I use those & carefully superglue in the lenses. I might try cycling sunglasses (in sub-tropical Australia). Yes it cost me a day in bed, a visit to an optometrist (free here), & antibiotics for the scratch on my cornea! I've learnt not to go down to their level or wear glasses of some sort. They're deceptively affectionate but constantly looking for ways to gain or dominate.. Thanks for your fantastic videos!

omg, I keep the little buggers too and often have them close to my eyes giving them a duck hug lol. I never thought about that, of course they have mad pecking skillz like that. MMM do I see a juicy bug in your eye? Peck OK nvr mind I guess not lol. I can really only wear sunglasses 4-5 months of the year on the west coast of Canada as if the water temp is much below 16 degrees the glasses just fog too much.

Have you tried using anti-fog liquids made for scuba diving to prevent dive masks from fogging? I live in Thailand so I never have the cold air fogging issue you refer to, but I do find anti-fogging drops and sprays work great on my dive mask.
@slappysurf
@slappysurf 3 жыл бұрын
I get cold pretty easy so I like to dress warm on the water and that means often having a hood. With the hood there is just way too much heat coming off my face. I did try "cat crap" and a few other anti-fog sprays, I didn't find them to be effective at all. This is also extra annoying for me because I wear prescription sunglasses so things get a lot blurrier once it gets cold for me. I've tried Sea Specs and Surf Shades. As for using "regular" sunglasses, I wouldn't put anything that isn't made of Polycarbonate in front of my eyes when doing impact sports.
@KKIcons
@KKIcons 3 жыл бұрын
@@slappysurf I am glad you commented with that. I will make sure my prescription is done with polycarbonate next time.

I know this video was made with good intentions but I would caution people from wearing sunglasses surfing. Any local, and probably most non locals will burn you if you are wearing sunglasses surfing as it is one of the kookiest things you can do along with peddling out on a soft top or with a GoPro.
