Watch me disassemble and reassemble the Showa Fork on my 2020 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. I replaced the OEM fork seals with a SKF Oil/Dust Seal Kit. I also replaced the OEM fork springs with Hyperpro progressive springs from Touratech (or is it Touratech springs from Hyperpro? Well, Hyperpro makes them and Touratech sells them.)
All Triumph service manuals can be found at:
www.triumphtechnicalinformation.com
**UPDATE** This is the new online system Triumph has switched to... unlike the old system, it appears that the subscription cost has been SIGNIFICANTLY reduced.... It was about $9/hr to access manuals.... now it's $8.32/month!!! I'm super stoked about that.... however, it does appear that the option to save/print the documents has gone away, so you have to have your computer in your work station/garage.
Illustrated Parts Breakdown (IPB) of all components and tools along with part numbers (also available for purchase) can be found at:
www.bike-parts-triumph.com
Below is a list of the parts and specialty tools used in this video:
SKF Seal Kit: KITG-45S
Hyperpro Springs (Touratech)
Motion Pro 45mm Seal Driver
Motion Pro Fork Oil Level

FYI, the Triumph manual says 90 mm oil level, but the model-specific instructions that came with my Hyperpro springs said 130 mm. It's listed on a decal on the back of the manual that came in the kit. Guessing the new springs take up more volume so more air gap required.

Well, those service intervals are based on riding on the road. In off-road conditions where the bike is working harder and getting muddy and dirty, you should be servicing the bike more often. I wasn’t “unhappy” with the OEM springs, but having done this on other bike knew the ride could definitely be improved. Additionally, people seem to think that changing springs has more to do with lack of performance than just having the bike set to the proper sag… I feel that people don’t quite understand just how much safer and better performing the bike is with correct spring rates. They make different spring weights for a reason you know. Cheers

@@BlueADV214 Thanks for your explanation, I agree the proper rate spring makes a difference, I have replaced the springs on another bike and made it way easier to control and therefore safer and more enjoyable. The tiger gt has in my opinion the right springs for my weight, I have verified the sag both in front and rear. I do not do much off-road, and if I do, I'm going at a granny pace. Thanks again, I have subscribed to your channel

Can you let me know the diameter of the forks at the triple clamp points? I am in need of new outer Showa 45mm fork tubes for my Elefant 900, and the OEM ones are not obtainable of course. The Elefant has the 45mm Showa forks from the early-mid 90s that were also used on dirtbikes. The used ones I can find are all of course beat to hell.

Great video, are all the variations of the tiger 900 using the same front forks or are the rally pro forks unique? For example, if I wanted to swap out the gold legs with black is that an easy thing to do?
@BlueADV214

I don’t think they are the same fork, so probably not interchangeable. Having the gold ones recoated in a different color by a suspension shop might be a better option.

This is such a great how-to. I am replacing my springs tomorrow with Hyperpros. If I fully close the damping on each, is it still necessary to mark and count the turns when I remove the cartridge? Is the counting to put the pre-selected damping settings back to where it was?

@BlueADV214
@BlueADV214 2 жыл бұрын
Been thinking about your issue... I feel like when the dealer rebuilt my fork last year, the same thing happened. I got the bike home and the adjustment knob was locked up, wouldn't turn at all. My thought is that when they reassembled the fork, the locknut for the cap was probably turned a few threads and when the cap was reinstalled, the damper adjustment rod that slips in the damper rod got seated really tight and wouldn't allow any adjustment. There's no specific instructions in the manual for resetting the placement of the locknut, but you might try turning the locknut a few turns counter clockwise before reinstalling the cap and see if that does the trick. (This is assuming that the part you are referring to is in-fact the adjustment knob on the very top of the cap).

I need to reduce the high of my Tiger, Do you recommend to do so by installing the Touratech spring Kit -20mm?
@BlueADV214
@BlueADV214 2 жыл бұрын
The kit I installed does not lower the front end. I can say the the ride has a noticeable improvement both on and off road as well as when riding two-up. Not sure if Touratech has a lowering spring kit, but if you’re just looking for 20mm, I would try just mounting the fork higher in the clamps.

Great video. I have the 900RP AND the 2011 800XC, both good bikes and similar forks, in fact same seals. Hey don't worry about you doing it in a garage. Better than a tent/driveway/living room! I have a shop now, but didn't always have one and can certainly relate. One question; does the stock forks/springs suggest/require a different weight oil? My 2011 800XC used 5wt if I remember right. BTW, at 9500 miles on my 2021 900 RP, my left fork seal is leaking so this is a timely and good video!

Interesting question… I have not decided on whether that is something I’m going to have the dealer do yet. The warranty doesn’t cover the fork seals so I don’t mind doing those, but I don’t want to void the warranty on the engine. I will be looking into the cost/benefit of both before deciding.

@BlueADV214
@BlueADV214 2 жыл бұрын
I ran progressive springs in my last bike and really like the way they improved my riding. I don’t know what the spring rate is on either the old or the new springs, but I can say with confidence that I have better handling and don’t bottom-out the fork with the new springs.

@@BlueADV214 before swapping did you use the dedicated front/rear preload settings for off road use? The Rally and Rally Pro off-road suspension settings call for max preload on the front and minimum on the rear (along with associated damping settings) to rake the bike out for off road use. I.e. ignore preload settings in relation to SAG, this is a dedicated preload setup to create a more off-road bike geometry. See kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fs-dhKiXqcjSeKs.html

I used the compression/rebound sets per the manual as well as for the rear shock, and it’s okay but not a silver bullet. OEM, as good as it is doesn’t mean that changing this like springs have little to offer in the way of improvement and I absolutely got better handling on my Tiger by switching to the Hyperpro springs. If OEM works for a particular rider, that’s great, spend the money somewhere else… I’m standing by upgrading the springs.

What are your thoughts on the change offroad? Are they much stiffer than stock? When I start to push the 900 a bit harder offroad and forget it's not a dirtbike it really blows through the stoke with the stock springs occasionally, not so much bottoming hard but getting close to it. I'd like to find something that holds the bike up higher in the stroke and not using as much travel when riding harder/faster. Debating going with these springs or working with a local suspension shop which would be more time, money, and a bit risker on what the results would be.
@BlueADV214
@BlueADV214 2 жыл бұрын
They don’t feel stiffer, but more supportive if that makes sense. They are progressive springs, so it stays plush at the beginning of the stroke but gets stiffer throughout the stroke. It’s definitely worth the upgrade. I don’t bottom out the front end now. The front end handles off-road WAY better. It soaks up baby-heads, potholes, etc and doesn’t transfer the shock up to the handlebars. I wish I had done it sooner.
@CDBiker220
@CDBiker220 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlueADV214 Thanks, I will likely order them. I may be looking for something more aggressive than the typical customer but for the cost I might as well give it a try as I need to replace the fork seals anyway. You also confirmed the PN I suspected would work is correct, so thanks on that. It looks like these will be easy compared to the closed cartridge forks I've done on dirtbikes.
@BlueADV214
@BlueADV214 2 жыл бұрын
I felt the improvement was really good for the money. Touratech sells them as a kit with the fork oil included, plus a rear shock spring if needed. I got my rear spring from EPM Performance and just installed it last night…. I will probably pull the shock and do a video for that soon, but it’s super easy once you know where the lock-ring is (top)(the pre-load adjuster IS the spring retainer).

Did you reinstall the forks to the stock position (relative to triple tree clamp)? I believe stock position leaves 3mm of tube above clamp. Steve Kanrad noted in his review that the Tiger has a steeper rake than most ADV bikes and pulling tubes down that 3mm would slightly increase the trail. Thanks.
@BlueADV214
@BlueADV214 Жыл бұрын
Yes. And from what I know about geometry, I believe trying to run the forks out 3mm to try and increase the rake is most likely negligible at best, especially once you compress the suspension. Changing the rake to fit your riding style is neither easy or cheap. My opinion is that the rake is fine for what the bike is designed for; which is a combination of road/dirt… but mostly road.

Sorry, I don't know the diameter of the tool. As to the bushings, they only need to be replaced if worn beyond a certain point... but having to leave the fork apart while you order them isn't ideal, and having them just in case is also sort of a waste when they are so cheap and the fork is already apart. In my opinion, I would just make replacing them a part of the fork refresh, especially if I planned on keeping the motorcycle.
