As the Allied bombing raids were getting stronger, Germans began to introduce new weapons and tactics fighting this threat. Sometimes, individual officers would come up with innovative solutions. In the spring of 1943, Leutnant Heinz Knoke, a Messerschmitt Bf-109 pilot first tried a solution which at first didn't seem like it could work - he dropped a bomb on a formation of B-17 Flying Fortresses. Was it a success? Did they try it again? See in this DCS World WWII reenactment.

My uncle was a Luftwaffe fighter pilot in ww2 and shot down many allied aircraft, including dropping bombs on b17 aircraft as in this depiction. My uncle survived the war and had a total of 78 enemy allied aircraft shot down. He spent 6 months being a POW at the end of April 1945, and left Germany to live in Finland where he changed his name, married and went on to fly for the Finnish Airforce. My father, his brother, was younger and served in the Korean War, earning distinction flying against communist fighter aircraft. My uncle died in 2010. My father passed away in 2019.

Your relatives that fought in the Korean war must have flown for another country as Finland did not participate in the Korean war. Additionally, due to Finland's connection to the Nazis, after WW2 the Finnish military was forced to abide by an arms limitation of soldiers and equipment for several years after WW2.

@@fleuger99 only connections the Finnish military had with Germany was to allow German troops inside it's borders to hopefully keep the Russians out, which didn't work the way they'd hoped. The were supplied with German weapons, and also used Soviet equipment as well. They didn't really like NAZIS, they liked communist Russia even less. Allied leaders were very short sighted.

I read “I Flew For The Fuhrer” when I was a teenager in the 1960’s. I still have it. It left a great impression on me. I had three relatives KIA serving in the 8th Air Force in WWII. One was my mother’s cousin who was killed when his B-17 was hit by FLAK over Hamburg. Another cousin, a former B17 pilot turned scouting pilot was killed when he had apparent instrument failure and his P51 crashed during a mission over eastern France. A more distant cousin was killed when his B-24 crashed on takeoff in England. German fighter tactics kept changing as the war went on as did allied tactics and weapon advances to counter them. The ME-262 Jets were the most effective against American bombers but they were too few, too late with not enough fuel or trained pilots left.

I also read Knoke's book when I was still in high school in the Philippines in the early 1960s. My best friend and classmate at that time became a pilot in the Philippine Air Force but unfortunately, his plane crashed during a freak storm and was killed, I was also enrolled in a private pilot school at that time but when my Mom found out about my friend's accident, she told me to quit. I ended up in a desk job after college working in a commercial bank.

Always thought a twin-engine bomber loaded with 20-40mm bomblets in masses could be designed to bomb bomber formations with some success from above out of .50 cal range. Never happened. Japan developed an exploding canister bomb with bomblets, but was only moderately successful with the concept.

I knew I had seen a fancy name for it: Sonderkommando "Elbe" was the name of a World War II Luftwaffe task force assigned to bring down heavy bombers by ramming aircraft into them mid-air. Since to me that the real thing was the ME109 or FW190 where armed with free fall bombs equiped with a barometric fuse and a parachute. They adjusted that fuse simply flying at the same level of the B-17s and climbing later, droping the bomb, with the parachute, over the large formation, hoping destroy any bomber with the near blast of the bomb. Sorry my bad english, i just want to contribute to the knowledge. Greetings from Santa Rosa-La Pampa-Argentina.

You are probably new to the channel so I'll explain. These videos use simulations such as DCS World and IL-2. Simulations can't have every single aircraft (and vehicle or ship for that matter) in every single variant, sub-variant and modification. It would literally take a century to produce. And no hard drive is big enough to fit something like that. That's why the closest available model is used. So, it's not a mistake or lack of knowledge. It's simply the only way.

The Royal Hungarian Air Force took this idea to a next level. They fitted a large artillery rocket, the 44M "mace projectile" (buzogánylövedék) on a Me-410. The rocket was fired in the general direction of a bomber formation. An acoustic detector in the warhead listened to the deep, humming noise of the bombers' engines, and when it reached a certain level of gain, it initiated the explosive. The weapon was very successful, it was basically a fire and forget missile, but as Hungary quickly lost the war, it never saw widespread use.

In the spring of 1943 it was decided to cancel much of the research into defencive weapons which included surface to air missiles. One of these missiles called Enzian, which was in effect a scaled down version of the Me 163 minus the pilot. It had a 1000 pound warhead and it was to be used on the big USAAF bomber formations. I do not know the temperature of the gas in the pulse jet but this coincides roughly with the dimensions of the tube. The Cyclone engine of the B17 should have a sound of roughly 200 Hz. When I was a kid I created a directional microphone with a parabolic dish (made from resin). This worked. Could be with a mechanical filter one could eliminate the sound of the pulse jet even though it certainly contained considerable harmonics. Besides, there are reports that state the V1 was even better visible in the darkness due to the glow of the exhaust pipe

But I have an unrelated question I hope maybe you could help me with? :D I recently got access to Tom Cooper's book on the Ogaden war, which you used to make your own videos. My problem is this: what did Ethiopian F-5A roundels look like during the Ogaden war? In Cooper's book he has some colour illustration profiles of some F-5A and F-5E types but he uses the old 3 pointed star imperial era insignia for both types, yet in your video you used the 6 pointed star for the F-5E that is consistent with colour photographs of some undelivered planes. My theory is that the F-5E had the 6 point star, whilst other aircraft like the Canberra bombers had the old roundels still, but I still don't know where the F-5A fits in. Perhaps a 5 pointed star? I've seen a photo of a derelict F-5A in Asmara with the 5 pointed star but no idea if that was applied after the Ogaden conflict and return to service against the Eritrean guerrillas. Anyways, best regards!
@showtime112
@showtime112 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. The Ethiopian insignia story is quite confusing because apparently, they changed them ever five years or so :) According to some sources I came across, early imperial insignia used a six pointed star but with three points shorter. Then, after 1974 they also used six points but all of equal length. Finally, they introduces a five point star in the 1980s (maybe because they were supported by the USSR and Cuba). The F-5As were probably represented in Cooper's book by the insignia they wore when they were delivered. I'm not sure if they were changed in later years.

@@showtime112 This really is a puzzling issue, and I guess it can only be solved completely if there are period pictures of the aircraft out there. Indeed, I also thought that the standard five point star was introduced in the 80s but it seems that South Yemen supplied some MiG-17F models during the latter half of the Ogaden conflict and these were apparently flown by Cubans and had the regular 5 point star roundel. Thanks for your help regardless!

There were no B=17Gs operating in the ETO in March 1943. The chin turret did not show up until the YB-40, an experimental gunship version of the B-17, arrived in May 1943. Chin turrets were added to the last run of B-17Fs after the cancellation of the YB-40 program. The B-17G did not arrive until November of 1943.

Another copy-paste: You are probably new to the channel so I'll explain.

What they needed, was ground-to-air missiles, able to deliver serious payload for direct hits or at least proximity damage. This would would discourage formations. On the other hand, the raising air dominance by allied fighters like the P-51 would also limit the Luftwaffe, and without the need for tight formations, the bombers could not be damaged very effective. So, in the end only precision-systems woul have made a difference like the Wasserfall. But they spent more energy on cruise missiles then SAM systems.
