DCS World - NATO Aircraft Losses Over Bosnia, 1992-95, Part 1

Күн бұрын

NATO was involved in the Bosnian war almost from the beginning. First by taking part in UN airlift to the besieged citizens of Sarajevo, and later within its own Operation Deny Flight and Deliberate Force.
This involvement wasn't without risk and NATO nations indeed lost several military aircraft in the skies of Bosnia. In the first part, we will cover the first two cases. An Italian Air Force G222 and a Royal Navy Sea Harrier.
Like usually, some assets needed to be approximated by similar ones due to the limited availability in DCS World.

Great work 112. I was called up in my USAF reserve capacity in 1995 to go to Aviano AB and help build things for the huge influx of aircraft and munitions that got poured into that facility back then to support these operations. There were Spanish, US Marine, USN, USAF, Italian and just all kinds of aircraft in continuous night and day ops there. It's hard to imagine being on the receiving end of all that ordinance being delivered from just Aviano let alone where ever else it came from.

Was just wondering haven't they made any reconnaissance flights, before sending out unarmed planes with relief supplies and did the G-222 have flares or chaffs to his defence, flying over enemy territories would have been more advisable? Sad to have seen those days that war going on in Europa.

That's actually a shortcut in the programming. Most aircraft have the heat source in the middle of the rear end so that's where IR missiles hit. Unfortunately, that's where they also hit multi-engine aircraft instead of in the engines.

The second world war and aircraft conducting ground attacks over Europe taught aircrew the lesson of never repeating your original attack run. That was a basic lesson when ground attacks were killing aircrew at a prodigious rate. The lesson was obviously forgotten and the whole learning cycle had to be repeated 35 years later. Dropping bombs on a tank at 450 knots?

It is so annoying that all IR missiles really seek only to the fuselage centroid, and not to the actually hottest part as engine plume itself from the rear and so on get triggered by the proximity fuze to blow up the rear, or when having more modern missile like a IGLA-I or R-73/R-27T to actually pull ahead of the target and to maximize proximity to the centroid fuselage and not to the rear part. It would be nice to see a multi-engine plane to get the IR missile hits to their engines and large wings, while not usually destroying whole plane, but at least causing massive damage for emergency landing. Similar thing is with the all other IR missiles and even RF missiles that their proper seeker functions and proximity fuses and of course warhead types are required to be simulated correctly.

I'm not familiar with particular situation there but the Sea Harrier could fly at 16,000 m of altitude and Strijela or SA-7 manpad can reach 4,500 m only. Why he didn't just flew higher and that's it? Or simply after finding the targets, fly straight up high then reverting to straight down and release dumb bombs, unguided rockets, anything from the straight to down position? He could at least do good damage to the tanks.
@showtime112
@showtime112 2 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, it is extremely hard to hit something with an unguided bomb from such high altitudes. And modern fighters can't really dive at 90 degrees like Ju-87 Stukas. Had the radar ranging worked, the Harriers could have made one pass which is relatively safe.
@Dog.soldier1950
@Dog.soldier1950 2 жыл бұрын
Better yet the TACP or FAC could have used a laser designator for the target and a smart bomb would have gone directly to the target with minimal AC exposure
@Only_God_Is_Allah_SWT
@Only_God_Is_Allah_SWT Жыл бұрын
@@showtime112 I'm not talking about the 90° turn. It's after locating the target far enough, go high then down from above; similar to the manoeuvre of dropping a nuclear bomb. It'd take longer for bombs to reach the target but the aircraft would release the bomb then retreat at safe altitude high up, then repeat. We tried in numerous sims and in majority of cases, you just need to know Exactly where the tank is on the ground while enemy is not even aware of until it's too late.

He stood up looks towards where the shadow went, he hears a loud bang and he gets pushed back 2 meters. He stands up again looks towards that area again and sees a large explosion near a radio station where the serbian forces used for their command and for communication.
