In this video, I installed door rails called "shikii" and "kamoi" in Japanese. It was difficult to move the columns by jack. I tried to prevent twisting of the materials. Maybe it's rare for you to see this kind of work.

I understand the difficulties of this project but I have to say, 'You make it look SO EASY' with your enormous skills & understanding. I admit to being a 'bit dumb' when it comes to some of your projects & their complexities but can you explain what the value is in tapping the edges of the ends of timbers before fitting them in to place, I have forgotten but it seems most important. I absolutely love your skill level, your understanding of all processes & the explanations given, it makes viewing SO much more enjoyable. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

I was so surprised when I see him marking finished timber with a hammer 🔨 , , then he used water to raise the grain & i was like oh I like it, I wonder how much that works as we don't do that in the UK

Dear Shoyan, thank you alot once again for the great video. I would like to ask you if you are using any kind of wax in the grooves of the shikii. Why do the doors slide so smooth?

I am not sure that "dowel" is the best word. Spline would probably be better. It probably isn't exactly a spline joint, but that might be the closest.

I actually, hate the Japanese sliding doors though. Our four kids destroyed all of the fusuma, shouji, and all of the naisou walls and even on the ceiling. They did rakugaki all over them, punched holes, and as soon as a hole opened, they started tearing the paper off. I prefer latex enamel paint on the walls and ceiling, not wall paper etc. The fusuma and shouji have good esthetics for the ambience, but, I think that they should change to more robust synthetic materials for wall and ceiling coverings, shouji, fusuma and even tatami. Like for shouji, some opaque polymer white sheet would offer the exact same esthetic from sight, while being much more robust and resistant to punctures and kids drawing on them. For the wall naisou, my kids drew on the wall, just trying mypet and trying to wash it off, rubbed a big hole in the wall paper. Silicone latex wall paint is best for homes with kids. They draw on the wall, you can wipe it right off and it lasts for years.

@@ShoyanJapaneseCarpenter Thank you. In some situations, can the underside of Kamoi lintel be grooved for doors or must the a separate grooved piece of timber be used?
