I up-cycle an old trashed blank and other bits and pieces that were destined for the rubbish tip into a new surfboard and then attempt to see if it will even surf.
The final dimensions came close to 5'4x21x ?
Big thanks to my mate Jacob for being the test pilot.

Great job, really enjoyed the step by step process. I make rc planes out of foam and use a hotwire for a lot of cutting and shaping. Also wondering why you paint before glassing? Fascinating similarities and differences. Not a big fan of the rough finish, but hey, it's your call and it certainly makes me think along different lines. Do it the way that you enjoy!
@Shrednaught

Thanks mate. This was an experiment at best. I was hoping the paint would hide the hideous scars in the foam but it didn’t. So I went with a yellow tint and that also didn’t. So last resort I though fck it and made it look trashy. I mean it already did haha

Awesome vid on the process of this build! And the testing at end!..Lots of ideas, got a few oldies in my shed...What sort of glue did you use on the rippings to make board wider?...Blanks here in NZ are around 120-150$nz, so good to save a few $ while in covid times...Glue give u any issues while shaping? Many thanks great vids.
@Shrednaught
@Shrednaught 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. I used gorilla glue although the wrong one, as it was all I could find. You want to use the brown honey type expanding poly one that gorilla glue make. It does dry slightly harder than the foam but you can still shape it. I’ve reshaped a bunch of old shapes so it’s definitely worth a crack.

Great effort. I found a broken longboard that I want to make into a mini Simmons. Is there a good method to peeling all the fiber glass off? Thinking of shallow cuts and pry with putty knife?
@Shrednaught
@Shrednaught Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. It’s always better to try upcycle rather than just throw it out. To get the glass off you can use a dremel or jigsaw and cut very thinly along the rails. From there you can pry up. You will lose some foam so try to make sure the shape you’re attempting to get out of the broken board has enough space to allow for the lost foam. Good luck 🤙

Hey thanks for sharing all your videos first of all. I have a board that needs a major repair and i want to strengthen. The board is not old but very light and fragile. It is already very thin so i think delaminating and reshapingis out of question but how do i fix all the little presure dents over the deck? Any thoughts?
@Shrednaught
@Shrednaught 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Without seeing the board it’s hard to answer but if it’s just heel dents on the deck of the board your best to just leave them and surf. Next board ask for a stronger glass job on the deck. 6/4 is a good start for a normal board

Almost certainly a dumb question, but what's to prevent someone from piecing together some blocks of hard packing foam (the kind used for flat screen TVs and such) to make a blank? With the fiberglass resin melt it? Is it not durable enough? ... Thanks for the video.
@Shrednaught
@Shrednaught Жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question at all mate. Nothing really.. the only real issue is strength. The packing foam is generally a really low grade eps with large beads. The beads make it hard to get a nice smooth shape and the low strength increases snapping and heel dents. Some of those strength issues can be overcome with the appropriate glassing schedule. Also incorporating a stringer would help. Also the glue lines between pieces of foam can be an issue to shape as it’s harder than the surrounding foam. BUT I have seen it done and I personally think it’s awesome. Better than just throwing it in the rubbish.

super video as always I love the jokes and the fun you put into them. I just finshed my first board and your videos and addvice helped a lot so thank you very much. how long do you let the board cure before you do the cut lap?

Thanks mate. It depends on a lot of factors so generally I’ll give it a few hours and then test to see if it’s ready to cut. You don’t want to try to earlier as it’ll be too green. With 4oz you can even get away with doing it next day. It’s just the nose and tail overlaps that become too hard to cut

As Shrednaught says.. next day even. Nose and tail where the glass overlaps, you can give a quick buzz down with a sander, to make cutting that area easier. (recent build i left it 2 days and did this.. works A-ok).

What kind of top coat do you apply at the end with a roll on and that gives such a cool looking matte finish? Is it Poly? Did you sand after that last top coat to get the matte finish? Cheers

Clear acrylic sealer. I just give it a light buff with 360+ grit to take the dust grit out and give it a matte finish
