He lived near me as a kid on the outskirts of Gainesville. I used to badger him quite a bit but he was always patient with the dopey 10 year old and an absolute great guy. Could never talk him into lessons though!

Rodney, has been my hero since the 80’s I have still got one of his original set ups and get it out occasionally (I’m now 48) the TED talk he did along with other interview’s at the time, helped me evaluate my life and what was important to me. So his most important contribution to me was saving my humanity and making more humble as he is.

I met Rodney twice . First time we chatted about Black Sabbath and bill nye the science guy for like half an hour . He’s an amazing dude to chat with and has amazing friends and interests outside of skating

Still have mine on the shelf. The ones that were Orange-White and later Uber Blocks, which, if I'm not mistaken, were the last to utilize "sliders" as they were called.

9:57 I swear to god, these days I always read stories about "the most influential people in Skateboarding history" and I read about Rodney, I read about Tony Hawk, Gonz, Stacey Peralta and they're all absolutely worthy, but Mike Ternasky very rarely gets mentioned. He is definitely under appreciated in that regard as so many of the top skaters from that era, in particular Danny Way, state how important Mike was to them. I mean, without Mike, we would literally have had no post-Bones Brigade Rodney Mullen. In my view he is skateboarding's unwritten champion.

To me there’s still nobody more technical and fluid than Rodney, what he was doing was light years ahead of his time, even watching him today blows my mind and don’t get me wrong there’s a lot of guys pushing the progression of the sport to levels never thought possible. The sport would never be what it is without and I’m so thankful to grow up in his time. If you’ve never road those old school boards you have no idea what it’s like to do anything on them. Absolute legend 👌🏻🤘🏻 well covered man 👍🏻

You are so on point I actually had a try at freestyle boards way back the trucks were way different and almost flat and early street decks were not great until several shapes based off the double vision came out I know my favorite early board was the Natas Psycho Kitty with the claws it had a nice big nose then I got a Ray Barbie with the 🔥 nostalgia moment sorry 😂

Rodney will always be by far my favorite skater, his passion and heart means more to me than his insane abilities, the fact that his ovelry-exceptional skills shine a heavy light on him, and he in turn uses that to inspire and show how admirable being humble and down-to-earth is is just other-worldly! He is one of the best examples of what being a good human being is, inside and outside of skating. Thank you Rodney, seriously, from the bottom of my heart, we need more people who care and are self-disciplined like you!! You are an absolute inspiration!!

I have watched the bones brigade documentary probably 50 times. It motivated me to be a better skater and learn my all time favourite trick. It took me 2 straight years everyday working at it. I learnt the frontside air just because of watching them fly through the air. It was worth every second. I HIGHLY suggest that video to any skateboarder. It changed my life. I quit drugs, ate healthy and realized that skateboarding IS MY DRUG. Thanks Bones Brigade, Rodney Mullen, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill and Lance Mountain. I will never be the same person again.

On the note about the flatland ollie, back when I first started skating, it was the latest trick. And being able to ollie back then was enough to attract sponsors. It seems now to have become the basis of nearly every trick. I landed an old school (pre-ollie) kickflip at a skate park once, and everyone under 30 lost their minds. Good thing I didn't try one of my old signature no handed haze beans, but modern boards are a bit longer than old school freestyle boards, increasing the risk

I'd have to say that Mullen is one of the most if not the most influential person in street skating. There are too many tricks that he invented to be able to pick just one as the biggest contribution to modern street skating but the flat land ollie was the doorway to all other tricks so that would have to be my pick. Imo he's the GOAT in street skateboarding.

Rodney's Plan B part changed what was thought possible on a skateboard especially the darkslides in 1992. Very humble guy

I remember that back in the days we were totally blown away seeing Rodney doing the first primo slides and dark slides. Sliding on the wrong side of the board was so unbelievable. And I guess the technicality of many of his tricks can not be rated high enough. There are still many flip / under flip / pressure flip tricks and manual combos Rodney did many years ago that very few skaters (if any) did after him since then.

That’s exactly what I thought! Dark slides also amazed me? Many combos and even like you said + some of the underflip variations are so technical and difficult they become somewhat niche & attempted by few skaters. The combination of freestyle and street had me totally hooked. I wonder how many of those tricks were done only perhaps once or a few times. You’d see the difference in most skaters for sure! Sorry for the ramble but yeah perfect summary from yourself! Rodney continue to inspires on and off the board :)

So a little bit after my mom died I got a freestyle board a few weeks later. Tony hawk got me started but when I saw Rodney... The guy has been my hero since I was 10. Btw been riding goofy since day 1. Only Rodney could switch stance like its nothing, and so humble. So glad I really started to understand him more. Truelly a legend!!

Rodney gifted us with bravery, paired with intellect. His willingness to bring out the subtlety of mind into the fray of reality, while shirking the odds, is paramount. In the process, he practically birthed the skateboarding industry. He was legendary to us as young preteens, & teens. We sought to emulate his perceived freedom of movement through impossible lines(soon realizing the sheer volume of work necessary). It was like a improvised street ballet. Breathtaking beauty, in the rough edges of urban sprawl, he showed us the divide, while crisscrossing the edge. 🙏

I would've given up entirely on skating if I hadn't seen Rodney Mullen's footage in the late 90s - when it was all about big air or street, freestyle was a niche that allowed me to get better as a skater. I love this sort of video, I never knew about the influence Mike T had on his career!

The true goat, and I don't use that word ever. Invented the modern skateboard shape, the flatground Ollie, an entire genre, the most iconic tricks AND he switched stances decades into his career and still skates circles around everyone. If his life was made into a movie it would be criticized for being too unrealistic

My favorite innovation from Rodders has to be the popularization of the Ollie. And the fact that DvsRM R1 wouldn't have been possible without him is MASSiVE with me; that first Daewon section, where D skates to Wyclefs "Street Jeopardy" is, I think, my most favorite skate section ever. This brings back so many memories. I grew up watching Bones Brigade and so many other skate videos. I remember seeing Rodney doing the dark slide and thinking that’s so cool. It was one of the many tricks I never managed to get done.

All the tech tricks we see now would not have been possible if Rodney had done them decades ago. He honestly is the visionary when it comes to modern street skating. Lazer flip? Dolphin flip? Darkslide? Just amazing. As well when we see these tricks and flips being done we take our own spin on them and create new variants of them. Plus also, I had that Mark V. barnyard deck. I got so much fun and joy with that deck. It showed me a different way to skate. Love your channel my friend!!!

I went to the video premier of the Globe Opinion video back around 03' and the entire theaters reaction to Rodney's part is something I'll never forget. The guy was like Superman! It seemed like every trick the crowd would go nuts and the standing ovation at the end and the energy inside the theater was insane. Easily one of my favorite personal moments from skateboarding

He is a genius and I can see he has a heart of gold by how much he shares and I can identify with how he a bit of a misfit and makes his own drum then beat too! I saw Rodney's part in Virtual Reality when I was abt 13-14. I instantly fell in love with skateboarding, and that's all I ever wanted out of life.. I'm 41 now. Not doing so good. But I'd still choose the skater life I was so graciously blessed with.

I picked up my first skateboard (a hand-me-down from my older brother) in '96 and watched Rodney v Deawon the following year with my brother. Ever since then, Rodney has been my absolute hero. Ive never seen a more humble, honest, and all around genuine person speak. Even tho i dont have as much time to hop on the board these days, i tell myself, "if rodney's still going, i have no excuse"

The kickflip in general because it’s my all time favorite trick and my favorite Rodney trick is the nollie kickflip front foot under flip in that bank in round 3 I think it was 🤔 and basically just every single video part he’s ever done is absolute gold.

Let me just say this: I'm not a skater, I never skated but Rodney Mullen is on my list of 'heroes of mankind' together with Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Martin Luther King jr, Muhamed Ali, Newton, Kafka, and a selected few more!

Round Three was the first skate movie I ever bought on dvd. Then Chicagoff or however it’s spelt by Volcom (Pink Floyd Version). These vids bring back memories fr. You should do a vid about melodi!

Watching Rodney skate is the greatest contribution to skate boarding because when you watch his video parts you feel like you can land anything. It's hard to picture skateboarding without Rodney Mullen!

To live in the same time with the people who pretty much invented a sport is insane. This man is a legend who helped revolutionize what was seen as silly into one of the undeniably coolest things in existence. There are few people in any sports or entertainment avenue that can be looked at as the sole innovator in vital aspects of their industry as Rodney can, that is what amazes me about him.

As a big Rodney fan since ~2006, I knew all those facts besides minor details. Yet, I think I can add about Oust bearings, which were designed after Rodney skated some regular set of bearings and Oust analyzed what kind of damage was done in order to adapt the regular design for skateboarding. Kinda like what Bones have with their "Skate Rated" seal of approval, Oust came up with Machine Optimum Clearance (MOC series) that were even sold Under Tensor label for a couple years (I still have both available at the time types of bearing designs with Tensor logo).

I remember all these moments yeah I'm old, street skaters at the time loved and hated rodney mullen he invented so many tricks that where so hard on the old decks but he also pushed the boundaries of what we could do he was an evil genius

I remember being idk like 8 and trying so hard to ollie few people could at the time it seemed like years before I could do it it's was probably like weeks or a month but it seemed so hard now at 47 I can't forget how to I'll be just walking down the street see a kid riding and ask if I can do a couple of tricks I'll bust out a couple of ollies, kick flips, heel flips, and if I'm feeling it I'll throw an impossible in there or a half flip casper shove it

Absolute legend. I watched gleaming the cube a few months back to reminisce about something from my childhood and my immediate though of that warehouse scene was “that’s gotta be Rodney Mullen.” Waited through the end credits and sure enough.

Pretty sure Rocco took most of the heat for 'ruining skateboarding' for vert skaters back then, but I wonder if Rodney also got hate from established pros at the time. Sure he's the GOAT now, but at the time the vert guys were like the 'alpha' bros in skateboarding, while freestyle was something of a nerdy sideshow. But Rodney flipped that and invented modern, technical, flip-centric skateboarding, cancelling many a slash dog's career overnight. That must have rubbed some people the wrong way, I imagine. Great stuff again, Shredz Shop, Reminds me I still need to check out his book.

I remember it as Rocco and rodney and all the other freestylers were freestyling while streetskateing was being developed by the likes of natas and the gonz and all the great vertical skaters and anyone who wanted to sk8 but didn't want to wait their turn on the ramp. Rodney just helped push it to new levels years later.

To answer your last question, Rodney's biggest influence in my life is the point in his talk at Pop Tech where he discusses the importance of knowing something is possible vs knowing how to technically do something... how the idea that something is possible (exposure) is more important than the understanding of how to do it (knowledge). That simple insight has influenced my professional work multiple times and with amazing results for both myself and my clients.

My best memory in sk8boarding was when I met Rodney in Santa Monica. I remember thinking how nice he was and all I wanted to do was make laugh. So we hung out for a bit and did my best. When we left, I heard him tell my friend "That guy is really funny". I later realized that I wanted to make him laugh because he gave me so much indirectly with his love of sk8boarding. Thank you Rodey!
