He probably doesn’t care about making anime design anymore because how oversaturated it’s become, making anime tees like that in the 90s was revolutionary

Not to mention, others are starting to put anime graphics on their brand. Whether be original graphics, or just from licensed franchises slapped into the decks and other merch like what P-ROD's Primitive Skateboards has been doing for the last 4 years.

Where i lived, hookups where a rare sight to see in the east coast the shops carried alot of eastcoast companys, dont get me wrong ud see girl and real and shit. But hookups were rare to see, let alone see alone buy or ride. Plus, back in those days people made fun of anime. It sucks but its the truth. The sameway how computer gaming took off, back when i was in highschool the kids who were best at computer games were unknown kids who got no respect for how good they were. Now thats all totally changed.

The reason why Hook Ups is important to me is because during the beginning times when I first started skating my family would buy me boards from Walmart and then 1 day this bmx guy sold me his little brothers complete for $15 and it was the Hook Ups bunny girl deck and this was my first ever actual pro set up. I probably would’ve gave up skating if I never had that board. (Sorry for the sob story but shits true)

F yes dude, great story-- shows how people used to give so much more, and pretend to be virtuous so much less. There was no thought of trying to get the top value of something you were not going to use, or if there was, the price was generous. Those pre internet days with a smaller secondary market really makes me miss the way people used to be. 15 dollar real complete is a great treat for any young skater in need. Hook-Ups is a classic brand!!! Back in the 90s there was something quite mysterious about the anime graphics on Hook-Ups because the style was less familiar to us in the West. Not sure how well it’d do nowadays now anime is huge everywhere - imagine how it’d look at the skatepark in 2021 to be the bro rocking the big tiddy anime girl on your board

My anime obsession started around the same time as my skate obsession, somewhere mid 90s. I'm from a cowshit village in rural Bavaria / Germany, so we had one jeans shop in the next town that also sold some boards at horrendous prizes. They ran Hook-ups, of all things (it wasn't even a skate shop...). Sure enough they were the boards of my choosing (whenever i had the cash to buy a proper new one, that is). Over the years i've wondered where this brand came from... and why this local jeans shop in the middle of nowhere ran 'em. I was a big fan of The End at the time so JK was definitely on my radar, but hearing now that he's the dude behind my brand? Now that's cool. Thanks Shredz!

WOW! This is awesome! Such great stories from all the comments! I too was obsessed with Hook-Ups between 1999-2002. This would have been through middle school and into high school. I had at least 4 or 5 decks, 4-5 shirts and I had a pair of Hook-Ups shoes that where TERRIBLE!!! They fell apart soo easy and had all these extra patches on them and they reminded me of like some sort of transformer shoe because it looked soo outta whack. The boards I had were the Evil Devil girl standing and holding the pitchfork with a neon green background (rare I guess because I can't find it anywhere online). Another Devil girl but she was dressed as a schoolgirl with a blue background or the red background that looked like a knockoff Coke Brand logo. I had a School teacher with "School Sucks" on the chalkboard. And I had a simple and less riskier "Hook-Ups" with the Popsicle-like brand logo on a black background (another I can't find on the internet. There's one with a girl and the Popsicle logo but not one with just the logo). Although I loved those boards, they were pretty cheaply made because I broke everyone one of them. Maybe because I rode vert, that didn't help any. The shirts also got wore down and I eventually turned them into workout shirts during PE in middle school. The teachers loved seeing my anime girls witch huge boobs that said, "School Still Sucks" on it, lol! Just nostalgic thinking back to simpler times. Thanks for doing this video, made my night!

This is the first video of yours I've came across I'm a big history nerd and I love skateboarding just recently got back into it so it only makes sense to start watching some history about skateboarding this is a great video I always wanted one of those boards circling them the CCS magazines growing up... I don't know much about skating but I think from what I've learned about the guy watching this video it's probably a combination of both a dig and a throwback both of which this old geezer skater utilizes passion in. Outspoken artist who is still skating I would definitely say a bit of both dig and love at world industries with jk lol and happy early birthday!

globe wasn't far off, but I think they made their suede and fabric uppers more durable by making it faux, and also moved into faux leather for their most durable lines a bit later. These were my favorite shoes, the soft soled globes, faux suede. Probably took some inspiration from the Hook ups brand. Very similar style, slightly softer sole. Lakai 1999 went on to emulate the styles and materials and make a decent product similarly, but I look to globe (est 1994) for their work in improving iconic styles that didn't last, and making them actually do so to a reasonable extent. I think Lakai had worse durability on their soft lines imo, people were leaning on shoe goo like it was an acceptable fix for their weaker products at the time, and they didn't nail the soft sole either. Skaters still had preferences for soft soles, especially tech or freestyle dudes who need the most foot feel on the board. Those soft sole globes could scoop a tre like no other, practically become glued to the edge of the board, and flex and snap, leaving your foot on the board longer to get your rotation. You could monkey foot in those if need be, You could do better pressure flips or late flips and shoves, and really get hold on rails and make them feel consistent. Your lands had to be clean too, a toe drag was much easier in soft sole globes. High jumps is the only place they struggled, you might feel the edges of your board bruising your feet lol. Dude aint wrong about Nike and Oakley. PS, Soaps (and even heelyz lol) were coming into the height of their popularity during my late middle school, so I was more likely to see those as the status symbol to be worn by then. Not like we didn't all hate on fruitbooters, but if you could jump up on a handrail and make your way down, you had irrefutable respect regardless if you boot or stick. And oh the beauty, scooters were not a popular thing yet during these times, and you'd be roundly mocked for riding one at Ryan's World and someone with respect would insist on teaching you to ollie. ride off, or drop in on 3ft spine. And once you did that, no more scootin for you lol. Bringing back good memories and different times.
