The upcoming movie takes place after the original four Shrek movies in the timeline with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz coming back to play their original roles. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish teased that Shrek would return in some way, and now that's becoming a reality in Shrek 5.

No doubt they realize this will either revitalize the franchise in the modern era or kill it permanently. I hope they lean more towards allowing it all the time it needs while maintaining effective quality control, instead of pulling a Disney and ruining it with corporate meddling(Wish). I’ve got faith in them though.

@redbulbuniverse Those are the people that made Megamind 2 and Megamind rules. They aren't the team that makes the theatrical movies. It's why Megamind 2 looks so ass, it's using the rendering software used to quickly render out TV episodes (among other shortcuts for TV).

Shrek is truly Dreamworks’ Fairy tale answer to Pixar’s Toy Story and this only proves it more, they both put their respective studios on the map (Dreamworks Pixar) around the same time I met my childhood buddies Amanda and Allie, and they both were rewarded with unnecessary SEQUELS even after the final one put a nice lid on it

Man a few years back I would have been worried about Shrek 5! But after Puss in Boots 2 a sequel movie to a movie no one really cared for and it being considered the best or one the best movies not just animated but of the year I'm so hyped for what they do with this movie.

RIP Jerzy Stuhr (1947-2024), Polish voice of Donkey. He died on the morning of July 9, 2024, the same day that DreamWorks announced Shrek 5 in the evening.

Shrek 5 will probably become the biggest animated film of all time if it's anywhere near as good as the first two. It will be 15 years since the last one and his popularity has only grown since, so the nostalgia pull will be MASSIVE.

l just don't see the purpose of a fifth film. Forever After had Shrek realize that whatever he's lost in his journey is nothing compared to what he's gained. Which is a perfect ending for his arc. Ignoring 3, the series is fantastic as is. I just can't see where you take the story now. I think Shrek had his run. Though I wouldn't be opposed to a "remaster" of the first two films, (improving the animation to modern standards).

The release date makes sense. I heard somewhere that dreamworks can only make 2 movies a year, one original, and one sequel. Next year is dog man (original) then the bad guys 2 (sequel) idk if this rule is fully true tho

Why? It hasn’t been all bad. Kung Fu Panda 4, while not being the best was still passable and entertaining enough for what it was. And it did make money. Next year also will see The Bad Guys 2 come out and that has promise knowing how great the original turned out and the potential the series has being based off a book series

Kung Fu Panda 4 wasn’t the best but it was miles better than whatever Megamind 2 was. That doesn’t even deserve to be called a sequel.
