My black galaxy fishbone crashed. I've put together some of my thoughts about this topic along with some parts of my discussion with local master shrimp breeder, Andrew Chan.

Great video bro. Was the existing substrate also ADA? And how long until u first put it in the tank before it depleted its buffering capacity and u had that 7.1 ph reading?

half were ada half were aqua rio, ada lasts longer, in my planted tank they lasted 4+ years without issues, i'd say best to swap tit out every 6-10 months for best effect, i've seen people use it longer, but no more than 1 year to be honest

I guess a under gravel filter box will be easier to replace substrate for buffering

After almost a year of experimenting I went back to ugf boxes for easier replacement once the soil depleted.

It's sad how some colonies don't work out well even in the same type of shrimp! Each colony is different in their own way, some being hardy meanwhile some are sensitive.

For sure, but an interesting journey. Wishing everyone success in their adventures

All i can think about that could help you although I don't have the answer, is maybe look deeper into a plant that would thrive in your tank while also being "optimal" at absorbing the elements capable of raising PH in the water column to even further help your substrate. Maybe it would require a particular setup, maybe it won't even be an aquatic plant lol. That feels like the only "oversight" I spotted after you mentionned your little checklist of things you did. I am still super beginner but you did mention the genetics which was key, but the plant thing feels important too since you are technically trying to push the limits here for low PH maintenance. Hope this helps 😎

That's quite an interesting idea. Peat pellets can lower ph and soften thr water. Used to use it tons with my apisto breeding days. Thanks for your detailed comments

I try to learn more like you everyday, I am at the point where I am fighting to save the only 5 sulawesi snails I managed to find for sale here in Canada at some LFS. After 2 weeks I switched them to my main aquarium and they are no longer playing dead, now they are going around eating. PH was higher in their previous tank, KH was also way higher cuz I was trying to help them with their damaged shells, and temps were around 29C. Now they are in a KH5 but PH 7.3 which shouldnt allow their shells to deteriorate, and temps may never exceed 27C in my main tank. I wish I knew what helped them come back to life, any clue with your years of experience?@@RWAquariumPages

I had exactly the same thing happen recently with my PRL tank. Hundreds of babies and then I started losing three or four a day I must have lost 70+ shrimp esp juveniles and large females. Looked like failed molts. I suspect the tank crashed in some way. All Parameters were on point. I used to use a thicker substrate, and UGF I have gone for the Asian thin soil method now with ADA, with the idea to reset every 6 to 8 months. Luckily I had a spare tank to move a good portion of my PRL before I lost the lot.

Oh no, that's heart breaking. It's always good to reset tanks and have a back up colony and a back up of a back up colony

Great purple colours. How on Earth you werent using RODI water in the first place is beyond me. Could you please do a video on yiur Dragon Bloods??

Thanks for the kind words. Will do a video on my dragonblood shrimp for sure. Stay tuned and thanks for the support. Oh I was using rodi water all along. Just remineraloze outside the tank but the sg and tw method is to remineralize inside the tank after adding the rodi water

He means siphon out water for water change, then add RODI straight to the tank and then adding gh to the tank, instead of premix the water
