308,30-06, and remarkably 30-30 are my go to, but that last one is obviously not a bolt action but for general purposes, it does the job.

My go to for general purpose is 308 and 300 win mag. I love 30 calibers. 3006 is greag too.

My 1st hunt 60+yrs ago taught me to have iron sights WITH A SCOPE, as the game was close & coming at me! (I prefer sights on top of scope, but hard to find or configure.)

I don't live in New York anymore I have several AR-15's now I live in Pennsylvania. I have since purchases several AR's and I still find my trusty bolt action rifle as most reliable and what I would trust my life to in a real SHTF situation.

Yeah, I went with the Savage Hog Hunter. Nearly ideal. Has the polymer stock, medium contour, threaded barrel, iron sights, detachable magazine. I do disagree with you on the magazine, these fit fish with the bottom of the stock, they don't stick out, and are small enough to have several with you. Only downstream is that. 308 is the heaviest cabinet they come in. I could have gotten the Ruger Hawkeye, but the configuration i wasn't would be $1600, and I got the Savage for $535 new.

I'm late to this, but I've been wanting one for a while, especially given its iron sights, 4+1, detachable mags over an 80's Remington 700 that I have. Would you recommend it for others for someone that doesn't touch Savage rifles very often?

How much? I would get it for historical purpose and for nostalgia, but for a serious big game and SHTF rifle I would go with a modern bolt action.

@@NYPrepper $250....lever action auto. Probably better than just a 22 is what i figured. I live in thick wooded area. Gators, hogs ,deer. No long wide open areas. (Where i live). Im waaaay out in the stix already. Most people would consider where i live a bugout location. Thanx for any advice... im on afixed income,not able to just go out and buy new "toys" (if ya get my drift)!

Any modern semi auto rifle is good to go long as you get quality brand

for a long term situation I prefer manually operated ... I have many gas rifles

Pump shotgun with 1600 fps slugs for disabling vehicles, bolt .308 [or 7.62x39] and AR-15 are go to defense. Finally, a 22LR as small game feeder and light defence

Great choice. Though the 308 will do with the right bullets such as M80 ball has much better penetration than those slugs.

I have a Remington 783 magazine-fed chambered in 308 and I have trouble with the first round out of the magazine does anybody else have problems feeding the first round from the magazine

783s are known for poor feeding. Those mags are expensive, so best option is to just download your mag by 1, or play with the feed lips (at risk of ruining the mag). Good cheap rifles but those feeding systems are crap

Is your mag a metal or poly ? I have read that some rifles have problems with metal mag and their feed lips. Where the poly mags will work fine

308 is about the most common round. Plus the military uses the 308. Think about restocking when ammo runs out.

Bit overkill. But nonetheless if you use one 5$ bullet the right way, you can secure a bull moose and feed yourself for half the year or more. Well worth it, just a rare cartridge compared to say 30-06 which is in almost every house in Alaska. Cheers

You seem to have a British SHTF rifle! 😂 Here in the UK, we have no semi-auto rifles. New York looks just as Draconian.

Not entirely certain what the mission is for this weapon. Are you defending a fixed position in a non-urban environment? Then it makes some sense because you will still have other weapons presumably to use. But if you’re in the field that thing is way too heavy and you likely will not have several long guns. Mag fed bolts are better from a practical standpoint. Most people run 5.56 AR rifles, I can use their mags and vis versa. Also while not a hard hitter economy v power 5.56x45 wins every time.

Its actually been debunked dozens of times. Controled round feed actually jam n hang up twice as often as a good push feed. The only situation ware the controlled round feed did better was sideways shots. Stimulating a dangerous game animal charged and knocked ya down. Push feed 99 percent the time are more reliable
