If people don't know how to wash their clothes by hand we're doomed.
@ModernRefugee24 күн бұрын
It’s not so much washing by hand, but keeping some measure of normalcy. To protect the mental health of the people in the situation. I have been told that small normal things is what kept people going in the SHTFs they were going through.

There are a lot of ways to use solar yard lights... take the top and put it on a mason jar. Now you have a lantern that doesn't run out of fuel. Use them in place of candles. They last forever and put out more light. Mine are 7 years old and still going strong, and they won't burn your house down. They're a great emergency flashlight. Drill a hole in the edge and hang them on the top of your backpack so that they get charged while hiking. Put it on top of a clear nalgene bottle and you've got yourself a perfect (lightweight) lantern.

I have experienced 21 days without power after a hurricane. I can tell you candles don’t give off enough light to do any kind of work. Solar lights and battery type lights are better than candles, but still not great. The best choice for light in a disaster is a kerosene lamp. If you put the kerosene lamp in front of a mirror, you have enough light to do just about anything. Kerosene lamps are cheap, I see them at thrift stores and yard sales for as little as $3. Get some extra wicks, and a spare chimney and you will have light for a long time.

I was a small child during the 1973-1975 recession. My mom did our laundry by hand and my job was to walk over the clothes as they soaked in the tub before she would scrub them on a washboard and then I would walk them again with rinse water before she would wring them out and hang them up. Dishes were also manual. Mom, my sister and I would do them, dry them and put them away. To this day, I am the one to scrub the pots and pans. If power becomes rare, I think doing laundry and dishes by hand will be required as the power will be required for things that don't have a manual option. As for the spare parts, that's already a thing in rural Alaska according to friends who grew up there.

Important information, M.R. Love scenarios.👍😀 As a caregiver, I wonder how the gov't would treat seniors that can't take care of themselves, during a SHTF? I fear they'd consider them a drain on the system. 😬

My MIL is one of them. When I told her we purposely don't have a microwave she stood there sputtering before managing to say she could *never* because then she couldn't warm up her coffee. I pointed to the stove and told her, "Granny managed without one. So can we." She sputtered again and said, "Well iiiiiiiii LIKE my microwave." Um, ok...I never said you had to get rid of it?? She knows I wash dishes by hand (dishwasher is a big drying rack lol) and that I wash clothes by hand or use the old school washing machine and that all laundry gets hung to dry...but what she doesn't know is that we are on a mission to eventually "do it like the Ingalls" as much as possible. I dare not tell her for fear she'll keel over in horror lol I love my in-laws to pieces but my goodness they are lazy, asleep, and just plain old frustrating.
