A subscriber asked for this comparison... so be it. I noticed some (currently) inexplicable handling rumble on the KSM8, any ideas?

Thanks Anton for all the work you put into these very valuable and at the same time entertaining reviews! KMS105 is basically a KM185 with a nice, removable 3-layer mesh grille (2x metal, 1x plastic), and a built in fixed high pass to compensate for proximity. The latter seems to be cutting too much in the lower end of your vocal range. I used it on many higher pitched voices, and personally consider it to be the best handheld you can get for female vocals in 2020. I could imagine a little EQ (reduce 200Hz, boost 80Hz or so) might improve things for you, too: Details and a smooth, yet open top end are there, and the missing low end is not a capsule limitation - it should be in general available, just pre-EQed the wrong way for very deep voices. I recently combined it with an A-Designs Pacifica Preamp, and liked the results (a more firm, yet still open sound) very much.

I love my Neumann 105 but I’ve found it too sensitive for small stages or recording spaces and a bit shiny so I’m eager to get the KSM8 as it has a nice top end roll off (16khz) - shaping as you describe it - and probably better for when there’s a drummer nearby

Sounds like a good choice!

Personally I'm a huge fan of the Earthworks SR314. I used the Neumann KMS 105 before I discovered the Earthworks option. Since all these mics run in the same price range, a shootout between all the mics in this range could be really helpful. Maybe add the Earthworks SR40V and the DPA D:FACTO for comparisons to a slightly higher price point. Maybe add the Sennheiser e965 for something slightly less expensive, but also in the same category. Any other suggestions that people have seen Anton review in the past that you'd like to see in a shootout type video? If this is way too much to ask, feel free to ignore this request altogether. Haha! Love your videos. They're extremely helpful.

Haha definitely not the same price. Great video! Thanks

Thank you. I was choosing between Shure KSM8 and Earthworks SR314. The Earthworks sounds far superior.

Greetings from across the pond. Thank you for the mic comparison. The --rumble-- is a puzzle. Can you duplicate / replicate the effect? Only that mic? Here's some baloney for you: on occasion while attempting to sleep, I have noticed that my hand -makes noise. "Huh?" Yes, laying on my side with my hand under my ear in the middle of the night when all is quiet I've heard a vibration. - OK, sure, I'm nuts. Ha! The ear picks up the vibration which could make sense. I relax the hand, noise goes away. - Only my left hand / left ear (could be the hand or hearing in that ear?). Could the mic have picked up a muscle tension? Other mics maybe wouldn't because of different resonance? - Really, I have no idea of what I'm talking about. Pretty sure it's all baloney. Thanks for all of the videos. sds

Thanks for your response. Tomorrow, I plan to be as scientific as may be, whilst doing a video on it. I will choose a selection of dynamic mics and swap between hands. I'm fascinated, but it might be something quite simple and overlooked. We shall see.

maybe een a 1-off w/ that particular mic? Good luck. - Science, what a concept...

you should call the videos also "ASMR" Then you would get a lot of views. And I talk about hundred if thousands. It is very popular and your content basically is "noble" ASMR with the videos you already do...the low and soothing talking, the handling noises etc.
@AntonBrowne3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I will consider that. It made me smile... 'Noble' ASMR!

The only sure that is comparable to earthworks or Newman is the shure Beta87, as it is also a condenser mic like Neumann and Earthworks. Ksm8 of Ksm9 are dynamic mics.
@AntonBrowne3 жыл бұрын
I think the KSM9 is a condenser.

I own the Shure KSM9 - it’s definitely a condenser mic. & I love this mic. ... The new Shure KSM8 is a dynamic mic

Why to compare dynamic to condenser? Neumann 105 should be compared to Ksm9 set same polarity

The KSM 8 is a ‘live band’ microphone, it is the true successor to the SM58, it responds beautifully to being eq’d to suit, plugging it in ‘flat’ tells you very little about it
@AntonBrowne3 жыл бұрын
I get your point, but I feel plugging in flat tells me a lot.

@MAMMOTHHHH63812 күн бұрын
All fans of Neumann and Sinheiser are very afraid of a shootout with Shure KSM9. It's hard to find a fair comparison anywhere. If such a video exists, then they are trying to show this microphone not truthfully
@torilawler85003 жыл бұрын
😂 That Shure KSM8 rumble confused the mess out of you! It needs a small shock mount. That was your pulse.

Shure ksm 8 sounds good in lower frequencies, upper are very bad. It is sibilant, have unpleasant spikes and bad for studio vocals. Shure sm 58 is better. I have both.
