This needs so much more attention production quality and experience is so far ahead of channel's that recieve more attention which is a damn shame cause you guys are great!

I almost thought I was watching a different channel with the intro, that was so well done! The XLR seems to have some top-end that the USB mode doesn't have, but honestly, the difference is so small you wouldn't notice unless you intentionally look for it.

Already one of the best reviews out there because of the singing examples for men or women, it was awesome to hear the mic when singing, really helps to make a desicion for me because I podcast, but I also sing from time to time, thank you!!

Thank you for demo on the vocals for singing. I was really looking for that in particular. I agree with the other comments. It has a bit more high end but nothing that cannot be eq'd post.

The singing vocals sounded great.. I saw another vid with the sm7b foam on this mic to increase the warmth, but from your recording, I'm sure in post those warmer tones can be enhanced.. I'm now definitely sold on it...

Another great review Mike - seems like a quality bit of kit. I thought I could tell a definite difference between the XLR and USB settings - XLR seemed more full and rounded sound. By the way you really need to issue a goosebump alert before you and Suzie sing :-)

Excellent review, many thanks! I'm looking to buy a quality usb microphone for my daughter to record vocals at home (untreated room) and this was one of the few reviews demonstrating female vocals - beautiful singing too! The XLR vs USB comparison was also very useful. Thanks to your review I'm now sold on the MV7.

The mic sounded great. I could hear no difference (even with headphones) between the XLR and the USB connections. Also, you and Suzi both sounded good when singing. The compressor worked well. I could hear the volume difference at each level change and the reverse when you turned it off. The far setting was really nice. Agree with your thoughts regarding Natural / Dark / Bright settings. Great mic Mike....LOL LOL... Love alot of the features as well man,especially the ability to save some presets , the limiter , and some of the tone adjustments to "cut through the mix" so 2 speak. Seems that ya just CAN NOT GO WRONG with a Shure mic,they been building quality products for years now and show NO SIGNS of letting up !!! Thanx for the video Mike,Cheers mate!!!

I would definitely use this with the ease of use in a podcast type of setting if I was too lazy to set my SM7b. For vocals, would still probably lean toward using the SM7b in that situation.

I can see that. Normally I would hesitate to recommend any kind of usb mic. But Shure delivered on the USB aspect here.

IMO, the MV7 sounded slightly better through the XLR cable. It sounded a little cleaner. I felt that the USB signal was slightly more muffled. Not a significant difference, but just my two cents. Overall, this seems like a very good mic ... especially for the price. I LOVE the headphone jack feature on the mic. I have never seen that before!

The XLR has a more crisp, definite high-end. The USB is smoother but the overall sound is very good and warm, with a nice grain.

These were my exact thoughts too. I actually preferred the "smoother" usb sound and found the XLR sound a little more raspy at the high end (at least through my iMac speakers and headphones).

The XLR sound a bit more open sounding, perhaps it's just a little more high frequency present, but thanks for the video, i wasn't aware of this mic.

i actually love how the mic sounds, with my headphones (corsair void pro) I can't actually hear a massive difference between using the MV7 as a usb mic connected to a pc or using the mic as an xlr mic connected to an audio interface.

Vocals, both male and female sound fantastic. Also, the XLR/USB settings are comparable. The software seems to be intuitive and feature rich.

I like the flexibility to have an additional USB connection although the difference in sound quality is quite noticeable - even for me. Not sure about the app though. Many of the "features" look more like a gimmick for me. I guess everyone prefers to use limiters, compressors and EQ inside your DAW. I guess the ability to mute and gain level the mic in the app without touching it is a nice, handy little feature.

Looks like both music vocals used XLR connection. Also, you used the stock foam cover and I heard no plosives. Lots recommend getting the SM8B foam which mounts perfectly. I got one for my MV7. While showing the software on your phone, there were some minor plosives.

Great video!!! Loved it I was about to buy a SM7 so this might be a better choice. Also, can you tell me what you think 9f the Mackie Control for use with Studio One- how well does it work. ANY difference with Cubebase?? Studio 1 is my main DAW & I havent used a larger control surface but am considering adding a Mackie control. Please help me.!!! Thanx

Hey there, thanks for watching. The Mackie hooks up and works well with Studio One in terms of function. However, during the past 18 months of use, I have hesitated to recommend it. This is mainly because of the display repeatedly failing on the extender, a known issue which they don't seem to want to resolve. In terms of the faders, if you get a new one, they are great, but the older used ones have quite noisy faders. I'll soon be testing the icon qcon pro g2, hoping for better results. Stay tuned!

Hello, great review! I bought the MV7 recently and love it. Using with 2017 iPad Pro with lightning port (have the apple lightning to usb adaptor). Was told by Shure that this mic was not compatible with the newer usb type C ipad pros, 2018+. Curious if you tried it on the newer pros or iPad Air that have the usb C connectors.

Similar question here. Can anyone confirm if the MV7 works with USB-C ports on current iMacs and MacBook Air? I believe it's just the iPad USB-C that isn't compatible, which is a bit of a shame for future-proofing.

You probably heard this by now but i hear MJ actually used an SM7(read that on gearslutz). The SM7B came later. And they sound different. You can hear various shootout right here on YT. I'm going to by an SM7B and use it with that big faume cover hoping it will bring back some highs missing from the SM7. Finger crossed...

Nice video I am new to digital music production. I currently use GarageBand for iOS to make music on my channel, however I will most likely move to CakeWalk. Would it be possible for you to do a video on how to make drum beats and melodies, chords etc using a standard QWERTY keyboard as I won’t be getting a MIDI controller, and / or a video on free VST sound libraries for CakeWalk because I found out that CakeWalk doesn’t have a sound library like Cubase’s HalionSonic. It would be greatly appreciated. Also keep up the good work. You are truly underrated.

What do you mean by "sound library"? Are you talking about WAV files? There are tons of free ones available, just do your own search. Perhaps you are referring to synthesizer patches, there are also hundreds of free VST synths, try sites like kvraudio.com There is really little excuse for torturing yourself trying to use a QWERTY keyboard in place of an actual MIDI controller keyboard, which can be purchased used for less than $100.

@@davmar9923 I dont take the music production too seriously. I only upload the tracks to youtube and do not actually release or distribute my tracks. I unfortunately wont be getting a MIDI controller because its over my budget. By sound library, I mean plugins that add virtual sounds like drum kit sounds and guitar sounds and piano sounds and synths something that works like Cubase HalionSonic

This is a perfect match for me. I can use it for the youtubie stuff but I can still record my vocals via xlr. I'll be using the scarlet 2i2. Do you still need a cloud lifter with this via xlr as well the case with the sm7b? If not I'll be in heaven.

Hi there. So it's gonna depend a little on how you use it (close, loud of soft voice etc), and I haven't tried with a 2i2, but I'm gonna say I think you would be fine without a cloud lifter. I had to drive it reasonably hard, I had my gain at around 75%, but there was still room without introducing noise.

How do you set GAIN for singing? Cuz obviously they say to make it go MAX ( when singing loudest note 10db and when normal singing 18db.... is that exactly right or no? how is that possible because you can’t exactly sing always making it stay in between them sooo...... Should I sing loudest note and set it by that OR sing my normal loudness and set it by that I have the mv7 and it’s so quiet. Although I heard this is normal for professional mics because it’s my first real microphone and it needs editing after

Has anyone figured out if the giant SHURE logo can be removed cleanly? It's just so large and distracting on camera. (I know it's "really about the sound," but in this case the SHURE ad is a bit much.)

Singing comparison: sounds great on male vocals. Female vocals were missing the airy, high end frequencies to my ear. Would be interesting to hear male/female singing demo comparing all EQ and Tone settings. BTW, great video!

@@prodbytaffy5542 usually (but not always) a condenser mic over a dynamic for acoustic sounds. You usually want to pick up subtle resonances/character of the instrument

And as you might expect, USB (with the mic's onboard ADC) has a higher noise floor - though not obtrusive for casual use I'd think.

Man I like that boom arm tho. I thought it sounded pretty good on vocals too. Not bad at all. Passable for sure. I can’t get over how ugly the mic is tho. I just feel like the took a SM7B and squeezed it til it shrunk into this and it came out short, stubby and fat. Sounds good but to small and stubby for my taste.

The song is beautiful and the vocals sound great. But it lacks the richness and fullness of the SM7B. Great mic for the price, and the versatility is nice. But I'd still rather have an SM7B.
