Today I review the new podcast mic from Shure, the MV7x. This is the XLR only version of the MV7, and before you scoff at it, the XLR output sounds 10x better than the XLR output on the original MV7.

I genuinely love these reviews, even when I disagree with your conclusions. I thought this mic sounded fantastic on every source, especially electric guitar. It's like the basic flavor of a 58, but smoothed out and extended. It seems every time you describe a mic as "mid forward" and recommend against it, it sounds perfect to me, so I guess there's no accounting for taste. But that's also why the reviews are so great - you provide more useful context than any other reviews on the internet, and we can make our own decisions based on what we hear and our own unique needs.

Thank you very much Weird Dirt. That’s precisely why I include all the samples, and why I very rarely include any opinion before I wrap up the music test. If someone doesn’t want to hear my opinion and only hear the sound samples of the mics, they can do that and move on and develop their own opinion on it.

I felt the same way. I was shocked how much i liked the guitar sound, and sung vocals. It seems to have a very flat response, which in my use case is very good. I also liked the Rode Podmic....lol.

Love your videos man, I learn so much every time thanks to all the comparisons between so many different mics. Just picked up an SM7b as I'm just starting out in my mixing career, and I'm loving every bit of it. My clients are upgrading from things like the Blue Yeti and AT2020, and they're really happy with the results as well. Just wanted to say thanks, as you really helped me make my decision on a big purchase (for an amateur). P.S. Laughed super hard at the "That's what we call a joke" bit, please keep the videos coming!!!!

Because of this channel I was able to set up my own equipment and bought an NT1 and a Scarlet 2i2. But I still come here to listen to more microphones because it's nice to keep up-to-date with the latest releases, even though I have the only set up I'll ever need for a few years... But I may just buy the SM7B or the RE20, just for the fun of it. Keep up the great reviews! I always look forward to them.

Like always the RE20 puts SM7b and its derivatives to shame. Whether it's due to coloration or not, it offers a pleasing sound to those who like a rich tone on the speaker. It works well with deep voice people, and more mid to higher ranged voices. Granted the price tag can be a turn off, if one likes the sound of the RE20, the MXL V67G is a mic to look at.

I prefer this MV7x to the MV7. I have been watching a three-host podcast where two have SM-7B's and one uses the MV7, which sounds noticeably different. I believe the MV7x would sound more cohesive.

Totally agree with you Bandrew. Would love it if you and Curtis Judd do another sound off. So fun watching you and him counterpoint. This mic is a maybe. I could even get another SM7B used for that money anyway, or at least close. I agree there are certainly better options. My voice sounds bad on any RE anything and I wanted that one bad. The SM7B is so forgiving and built like a tank. I may just get another SM7B used if my need really is there.

Personally the sound was quite the same to the SM58. Makes sense being another Shure mic just much cheaper I would totally buy this if it had the pricetag of the Podmic/AT2040/PD-70 but for the price it dont perform that much better or even look that much better either kinda same ballpark just with a price hike because people want the SM7B but cheaper and this don't seem to be much closer to the SM7b

Great review as always. I'm really interested in the off axis sound and was wondering if an off axis example from 6ft would be noticeable compared to 6ft with it pointing towards you? The off axis seems really good at eliminating sound and if you live in a place with noisy outside, perhaps this mic wouldn't pic up those noises as long as you're far away from the window and the mic is pointed at you. What would be your thoughts on that? I'm still looking for a great mic that doesn't pick up any noisy window disturbances for voice over work.

I’m very interested in the other recommended mics you mentioned at the end of your video around that price point, $100-$200 range. They don’t have to be pretty just need that good good sound, thanks!

Setting the Neumann aside because obvious, indeed the RE20 is so very good. Too bad it's not as good as rejecting background as others (including the great SM7b), and the black version can be hard or much more expensive to get in some regions.

I like the sound of this mic from your review. The mic sounds more "honest" than "exciting" and I think that's perfect for broadcast and speech particularly. I was looking for a lower priced alternative to the SM7B and this seemed right on the money, especially given I don't need USB and it's a noticeable price difference.

Hey, came here off the back of the MV7 review and now I'm curious which one you'd recommend? I don't have any audio interface setup at the moment but would love to get into it at some point in the future if I can find a great budget option (will go watch your other vids for that hopefully). I've been using a Blue Yeti for 7 years or so, mostly for comms while gaming, work video conferences and I can't quite get it to sound great, but that may be because of my extremely limited audio knowledge. I'm also set up in the middle of my apartment between the living room and the kitchen so the yeti picks up a ton, even with some processing a friend help me set up. And regardless of which of the two you'd recommend, do you think it would be a good step up from the Yeti overall? Thanks for the video and thanks for the help! :)

Every time I watch one of these dynamic mic reviews and comparisons, I find I really like the Se Electronics v7, and I may purchase one. The MV7x does not wow me, but sounds relatively thin and a wee bit tinny, and is overpriced for what you get. I prefer the SM58 to this. Great review as always
@ryanwilson5936
@ryanwilson5936 2 жыл бұрын
The V7 is pretty nice. It likes a lot of gain though so depending on what pre-amp you’re using you’ll probably have to have 100% gain. However, Klark Teknik has a Cloudlifter alternative for $35 that works great. I just bought my son the V7 along with an Audient Evo4. The gain was at 100%. With the Klark Teknik CM-1, the gain on the Evo4 is now at 50%. I also have an SM58 and the V7 certainly produces a fuller sound to my ear. More broadcast-y than the 58 for sure.

The V7 is thinner and tinnier than the MV7/x, which is not a bad thing, since it's designed to be sung into closer than this, which adds proximity effect - but it's odd that you think the opposite. The 58 has a treble that manages to be simultaneously dull and peaky. I wouldn't use one unless I absolutely had to.

Hey, would you recommend upgrading from an old yeti to something like the MV7? And if so, should I get the regular USB+XLR version for future XLR compatibly (even though the XLR performance is lacking) should I decide to upgrade the rest of the setup, or should I just go with the MV7x, which fixes those performance issues but means I'm upgrading to a beginner XLR setup right away?

Great review, but when you're comparing the mics, the angle of your face is a little different (more facing) than the control mic, the MV7X (more angled away). It's a subtle difference, but it makes a difference. For example, I think the difference between the MV7 and the SM7b would actually appear a little less than it does in this comparison, just because of that angle difference.

Could you review de Mu900 USB condenser microphone. I think it'd interesting, your testing is legendary.

Hi, May I know what is the mic stand you are using? I am using a Blue Compass Boom stand fixed on a corner of the desk top. And an UA appolo is beside it. In this setup, there is a huge hum noise coming from the mic stand. If the mics are hold by hand, there is no such noise. Do you know how to isolate the vibration from audio inteface to a boom stand? Thank you.

I want a SM7B, but can't afford it, so I'll buy one of these, because let's face it, it looks like a pro level broadcasting mic!

I got bored of sm58 and looking for the new toy again. Can't stop watching your videos :D Somehow Samson q2u stands out rather often, it sounds bright without sounding annoying. Hmm..

Now with them releasing a different version (albeit big difference) of the MV7, I wonder if USB-C MV7 refresh would ever be possible.

USB-C is just a connector, it would still be using the same USB 2.0 protocol because it has no need or benefit from USB 3.0 or 3.1.
@JapesZX

@@Pentti_Hilkuri it'll have the benefit of using USB-C, which is slowly becoming a universal connector. So you won't have to bring as many cables if you're constantly on the road.

Does the shure mv7x need a cloudlifter? I'm thinking of getting it cause I already have a scarlett solo 3rd gen. Torn between that and the Rode Podmic, need opinions!

Can you still use shure software with this microphone or is that only available with the USB version?

Weird question but do you think it would be better to grab a Shure mv7x for $150 or a MXL bcd-1 for $90 or the Rode Pod Mic. I can't really treat the room I am going to be using to record voice over, and it's a pretty big room it has the kitchen dining are and living room all basically as one room. I'm trying to set up in the corner Until I can get a new apartment. I just tested out the zoom zdm-1 and it was ok but I dunno it felt kind of hollow.

So basically- If you were going to buy the MV7 for the XLR port, just buy the MV7x because it is cheaper?... Trying to decide between this MV7x and the Rode Podmic. Any tips or reason to go with one over the other?

My ears often can't hear the differences or tonal qualities Bandrew calls out, but my gosh, there was a noticeable difference between the MV7x and the MV7 w/ USB! Is that really the only difference between the two, the addition of USB? I thought the MV7x sounded fuller, closer the SM7b than to the MV7.

I'm using the MV7x mic with a behringer tube ultragain mic 500 audio interface. Do you think it makes a lot of difference(better quality) with the Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen??

I heard a difference between the MV7 and the X, and like the way the MV7X sounds. The MV7 sounded a bit more nasally and muffled.

What kind of cord are you using for the microphone. I keep buying cords but they either don’t fit or make my MV7X sounds scratchy, also makes weird screeching noises that forced me to have to use my headset mic so my friends can hear anything while we play games.
