One of the smartest things the film does is the casting: if you were filming a story about evil doctors doing experiments on patients you would cast EXACTLY these actors.

In 2010, Martin Scorsese went against-type and made a psychological horror thriller. One year later, he went against-type again and made a children’s adventure flick. If you ever get the chance, DEFINITELY give Hugo a watch. ❤

This is worth a second watch. Noticing stuff like the guards, staff, and patients being on edge around Leo's character hits different when you realize he is the most dangerous patient they have.

The dream scene where his wife crumbles away in his arms is really darn beautiful. P.S. Shutter Island and Inception both released in 2010, and DiCaprio's characters in each movie have very similar tragic backstories.

I wrote a piece on this movie for my college theory years back. There are so many signs throughout the movie. For example every time there’s water/fire in a scene (rain, drinking water etc) he’s hallucinating. In the scene where he’s questioning the other patients, you see the patient drinking a glass of water, from his point of view the glass is empty, from another point of view it’s full. Also notice whenever he’s in shot in a busy area you’ll always see a guard in the background, but not the background of another person. Fascinating movie, you can watch it twice and see a completely different movie both times

Everything is so different when you're viewing it after the first time.. noticing how the guards are glaring at him when they arrived, the patients, the group discussion, awesome.

Yes, good job George. The Warden is played by Ted Levine. He was Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. Also in Heat, which you reacted to awhile back. The deputy is John Carroll Lynch who you saw in Face/Off. Also in Fargo and Zodiac. Michelle Williams was Leo’s wife. A lot of reactors who watch this tend to not recognize her. I believe this was the first movie she acted in after Heath passed. The music used during the ash scene is On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter. Was used in the opening scene of Arrival. Great job as always, you two.

The acting, writing, direction, cinematography, score, sound design and editing are all in top form. Truly one of Scorsese’s best films and severely underrated.

I was the driver of the weapons carrier for the CG that was added to the shots done on the East Coast. We did the CG at Disney's Golden Oak studio outside of Los Angeles. I was also a guard at the lighthouse where we were added in.

"Welcome to there's paper on my desk..." This sounds exactly like what I once heard an extreme sleepwalker say. She came out of her bedroom in a panic and proclaimed in wide-eyed terror, "You guys, there's a pillow on my bed!" Her roommates eventually managed to coax her back to her bed after they removed the offending pillow.

It's funny that you wondered if the patients had taken over. Ben Kingsley was in another film based on an Edgar Allan Poe story where the premise was exactly that.

I love this movie and its plot twist. At the end, as he know the truth, he lied and played a regression to be lobotomized because he felt he didn't deserve to continue living due to what he have done. That is why he said: "What could be worse, to live as a monster (Andrew Laeddis) or die as a good man (Teddy Daniels)?"

The guard called the lighthouse in the beginning a sewage treatment facility because that is the center of the experiments, and he likely doesn't think very highly of the patients.

This film is such a gem, I think it ended up being overshadowed by being released at the same time as Inception, but for me it is SO much better. George is spot on too, it's worth rewatching so many times. So many little details (that you guys actually picked up on REALLY well!). The casting in this film is PERFECT, the cinematography is beautiful (just that first dream sequence should win all the awards), and such a painfully beautiful story.

This movie was particularly traumatizing to me, because I had a cousin who died pretty similarly to the kids in this movie, at only 3 years old. The pond just wasn't that deep and it was an accident. Divided the family from my mother's side.... But that was over 20 years ago. My mother has even since died.... Sorry if I bummed anyone out. I need to tell this story from time to time. 😅 I wish everyone a happy weekend! 🤗

They advertised this movie with commercials that said it had a shocking twist, which is the dumbest thing you can do because now you’re trying to guess the twist the whole movie. My first time watching it with my friends, some of whom had seen it before, right when they found that piece of paper that said “who is 67?” I said it’s definitely Leonardo DiCaprio and he’s the missing 67th patient. Everyone yelled at me saying I just ruined the movie and no one believed me when I said I was just trying to guess the twist and I hadn’t seen it before lol

Watching Shutter Island a second time once you know is WILD

When this movie first hit theaters, I saw it twice within the span of a week. The first time I was confused, but one that second viewing it was like watching "The Sixth Sense" and knowing the secret. I could spot all kinds of clues and loaded glances among the characters. Second time was definitely more enjoyable.

That nightmare scene immediately put me in mind of 1408 (2007), starring John Cusack. Phenomenal horror film, and I would love to see your guys' reaction to it sometime!

The reason the guards were so on edge at the beginning is because they knew it was a role playing skit. The CGI is also deliberately bad in the opening because they were never on a boat. The clues are right in the opening scene.

I can't believe that (me included) the ending was a big debate when it came out. Some people thought it was open ended, some people couldn't decide. After a few watches it became so clear to me that the ending was clear; he knew and was lucid but decided to die pretending to not know.

I sort of guessed the twist to this the first time I watched because I thought it was odd that such a heavy smoker had to ask other people for cigarettes and lighters, like he wasn't allowed to carry that on him.

"He's choosing to go out at a moment of clarity" I think that's the best summation of the final scene I've heard up to now. It's kind of weird, because when I first saw this film, it never occurred to me that the ending was supposed to be ambiguous. I just thought it was obvious that Laeddis was faking a relapse because he had accepted reality but realised that he couldn't live with himself going forward. The giveaway for me is when he asks Ruffalo the "live as a monster or die as a good man" question, which shows to me that he is lucid enough to ask a question like that, not the sort of thing a person of unsound mind would be able to express.

The "I love lamp" intro made me unreasonably happy before starting a tough movie.

This is such a GREAT movie, and the second or third viewing of it is perhaps even better, knowing the plot, so you can sit and pick up on the small clues here and there

I'm currently watching Josh Brolin's Sci-fi show on Amazon Prime "Outer Range" about him playing a farmer discovering a bottomless hole in his land. It's my new favorite show, Fallout was my new fav but I finished that.

My only small gripe about this movie is saying he’s a “monster” and his “crime is terrible.” I don’t know about that. I think a lot of people with children would say shooting your spouse after coming home to find they drowned all 3 of your kids is a not entirely unjustifiable action. Am I wrong?

This is such a clever film. It actually never hides the 'twist', which means you can watch it multiple times and you notice something different every time. One of Scorseses best, which says a lot!

Michelle Williams is one of my all time favorite actresses. I really wonder where she's been recently, I loved her in EVERYTHING I've seen with her. If you wanna feel miserable for one afternoon, especially as a couple, I would highly recommend watching Blue Valentine. Her and Ryan Gosling. Mesmerizing plot and performances. You won't be the same after watching that movie. It's brilliant and I love it....

Ted Levine, good ol' Buffalo Bill himself, showing up and stealing the scene entirely was such an unexpected and awesome surprise for me the first time I watched this film. This movie is one of those that is better the 2nd time through for sure. The ending seems so typical until the last 60 seconds, when it hits you with that absolute uppercut and you realize there's so much shit you missed your first time through that you need to watch it again.

Somehow I missed the announcement for this movie, so it's a surprise when I logged on to KZfaq for my nightly binge and I saw this. One of my absolute favorite films. Thank you for doing this. :)

The last recorded lobotomy took place in 1967 and ended in the death of the patient who it was performed on they’ve also stopped lobotomies due to the medication he was on that didn’t work for him chlorpromazine if they were that effective I think they’d still have them today

Guys, the storm was also a hallucination and I'll explain why. In the lighthouse Dr Cawley says "I know every detail, Rachel Solando, your missing partner, the storm...". The storm isn't real and is a hallucination / delusion that gives Andrew a valid reason as to why he cannot leave the island. "I thought you were leaving?" - "It's not like we can take the ferry". Also the storm supposedly wrecked the courtyard with trees and debris everywhere it was a complete mess, yet somehow the next day the courtyard is in immaculate condition again? The trees are all standing upright again and everything is intact. Lastly the storm magically disappears and it's clear sunny skies as soon as Andrew is of sound mind again which tells us he is no longer hallucinating the storm.

I hope you guys do more of Dennis Lehane's movies. He's the person who wrote the book to which the film is based on, and he also wrote two other great movies: Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Leo is my favorite actor and this is my second favorite performance of his behind The Departed. The departed and Shutter Island are my two favorite Scorsese movies as well as my two favorite Leo movies.

this is one of my favorite films. It is 100% a movie you need to watch multiple times. There are so many intentional continuity errors, and moments that highlight where it was going. You guys picked up on the cup of water but there are a bunch of others. The idea in having them in the film intentionally was that viewers would see them but not realize it thus creating a sense of unease.

Sometimes I watch your reactions to things I haven't seen just to see if it's something I want to watch. I had to pause this half way through and go watch it before I came back. Good movie!

The best part of this film is watching it again and feeling like an idiot for not figuring it out

I did initially interpret the final line Leo says as him making the choice but since then I have watched it several times and even looked up a lot of what they talk about concerning medical history and came to the sadder conclusion that perhaps Laedis may have had a genuine concern subconsciously that he was delusional. I think we fault psychology a lot for unremarkable results when in fact healing takes time if the damage is that severe. If the disease is sudden or chronic we have to believe that the desired result requires time, which Teddy didn't have, sadly. But the doctors then wanted nothing more than immediate results and resorted to the last desperate decision when they didn't get it. Teddy might have been on his way to healing but the cost of bringing him there might have been too high given the era and circumstances.

Brilliant film. The way the story builds up the twist ending could go either way. Leo could be a mental patient being helped by good doctors or he could be a real detective being brainwashed by evil doctors.

In case no one mentioned this yet because I’m less than halfway through this video so someone might’ve brought it up already, but it’s interesting you should bring up Skyrim and then Max Von Sydow came up a few minutes later, he was actually in Skyrim as one of the prisoners rescued during one of the missions. at the time when I was playing the game I didn’t even have to look it up. I knew that voice in a heartbeat.

The white orderly who was in the bathroom when Rachel “escaped” is Joe Sikora. He played Ginger in season 1 of True Detective.

Leo's character also got ill to violently ill or very weirded out, each time water was in the scene... The first scene boat ride, the storm scenes and of course the lady drinking from the glass / no glass. The PTSD of the lake scene wrecked him, hence the water weirdness. I'm sure it would anyone, especially in the early 50's. I kept expecting you both to guess what was going on early in the film. Glad you didn't figure it out till the twist end, and were shocked, like the rest of us. Well Done... Great reaction... Any way you guys can do the Triple XxX movies series... with Vin Diesel and Ice Cube? and "The Pacifier" again Vin Diesel? I know they're kind of cheesy bad but I think they're right up your alley.

I read a book in high school that had a similar plot it was called . I am the cheese . It blew my mind . I know this was made from a book too but how they directed the visuals and dream states is amazing leo crushes every role but it was so fun to watch it's like how they did inceptions effects . I also loved how they keep the audience confused to even question their common sense. The lighthouse logically can't fit nothing in it but u root for him so much and want him to succeed it's like u go crazy with him lol even all doctors laugh at him n mension the rule of four in front of him really early on which i think was clever. the ending line was great idea. Thnx for reaction guys I absolutely loved your theory that they all switched places ha ha sounded like the experiment movie ( based on psychology experiment where they got volunteers to pretend to be cops and inmates in a fake prison.)
