Shutterstock vs. Alamy: Where did my stock photos earn more money?

Shutterstock and Alamy are both stock platforms that I have used to bring in passive income. In this video, I compare earnings between photos that I posted on both sites. Which one generated more income in the long run? Keep in mind this is my PERSONAL experience. Perhaps other people have the opposite experience.

Shutterstock used to be on the top in terms of sales, but in the last few months Adobe surpassed it. It's also interesting to see how even if i have the same images on both, a part from the editorial ones, the top sellers are totally different. I've also been uploading consistently in Alamy over the past 2 years, and i've had some sporadic sale. Personally i don't spend too much time on it, i just upload the pictures and fine tune them from time to time, luckilythe upload process is very easy. But this month something magic happened and i sold 3 images for 320$ each! That was quiet motivating, so i will def continue uploading there. Too bad i can't know who bought them!

Love the live news story! I was in Hong Kong during the first round of protests and I had uploaded a bunch of photos from them. Alamy contacted me requesting more info and told me they were putting them out on the news feed and they seemed excited. I did not get any news sales from them. I sold some later including a book cover, but nothing at the time. Since they have been brought out, Live News access is much more limited. But Alamy is the only agency I really make money at. I have been there 16 years and should cross $500,000 in gross sales next month (around $225k net). Outside of Pond 5, I have not crossed $1,000 with any other agency. I sometimes think i should make my own video 😂😂😂

Good mentorship video. I have had similar experiences over 2.5 years. Of all of the sites (Alamy, ShutterStock, Adobe, IStock/Getty etc) I have found ShutterStock (SS) is the volume site. So I upload all of my images there. If I have a very special image and my gut tells me that it is worth it I will add to all sites. But I watch my performance on SS and once I see an image that is constantly downloaded I will make sure I add it to all of the others. I think the theme of what you are getting at is how to best manage your time spent uploading images. There is definitely something to that. Keep up the videos as you are really building a nice collection of stock photographer lifestyle clips.

Hello Nicole, enjoyed the Shutterstock VS. Alamy. I actually do up load to both but have stopped uploading to Alamy because of not having a single SALE on that platform to date. Although I find that shutterstock should be paying the artist more, my work sells a lot on Shutterstock. I mainly upload commercial work but have also sold editorial photos as well. On the other hand, I do upload to Adobestock and find that I make about 50% more money with them compared to shutterstock with much less downloads. AdobeStock pay’s artist more and tends to sell my photo’s at a higher price point. I started in the game much later, My first uploads in Stock was in August 2018 with steady growth each month. Thanks for the great video 👍🏼

Definitely ShSt has been so far the best one for me. And BTW, something curious happened just last month: I had been steadily selling on average 20-30 USD a month on ShSt, but just as I cracked the 1500th upload mark, I jumped to 74 USD in Sept, and this month I already have 117 USD, and October isn't even over yet. Hi Nicole, I think there is one major thing you did not mention in this video. Alamy is a MACROstock site, while SS is a MICROstock site. It makes a really big difference. As you say, you started in 2017, so on Alamy 2 years time is not enough to judge anything. To compare a macro and a micro site is like comparing cats and dogs :-) And one more thing: I have heard that Alamy now performs better in the USA than in the UK... (reading the Alamy forum, there are several non-UK contributors that reach massive monthly income).
@NicoleGlass

@@NicoleGlass As for me, I have been uploading to Alamy for only 1 year with 3 sales (one of them is 3 digit). I read their forum very often, and I meet there a lot of inspiring experience from contributors being on Alamy for several years. Another thing that may cause low sale number on Alamy comparing to SS (or other micro) is if you upload the same collection to both micro and macro sites. My personal experience: two of my niche photos were viewed on Alamy, then on the same day bought on SS for pennies. So it is obvious that customers search for the cheapest, if it is a niche photo they want. Maybe it was the case with your Trump photo? We don't know for sure, but could be. All the best for you!
@42degreesouth

It should be obvious that the downloads from Shutterstock undercut Alamy's pricing ability, especially if you have the same image at both sites. In effect you are actually actively undercutting yourself. If a buyer can pick up the same photo from Shutterstock for pennies, why would they pay a fair price (to the photographer) on Alamy? It is my experience that stock photography license fees are trending down dramatically in the last 10 years. In 2010 my sales with Alamy averaged a return of $84.44 per license. By 2019 that has now trended down to $26.45. 2020 looks to be returning even less. It's a reality that stock photography is now a game for amateurs, happy to be making pin money.

I have been with Alamy since a few years after it started and the cut was then 60% to the photographer. It went down to 50% (16% cut)and the other year almost went down to 40% but stayed at 50% for exclusive images but from 1st June the photographer cut will be 30% for most people and 40% for those who have an annual turnover of more than $250. Also prices have been sliding down from $300+ to an average of $15. Alamy are not pros in any sense of the word. They will encourage you to chase anything in order to stock their site.

I signed up with Alamy SS and a few others. Within a month one of my photos on Alamy sold for $250.00, was 50 50 split back then. Sold a few more on Alamy, my take was over $400.00 in several months. Alamy was way ahead of the pack. With in 2 years SS has finally caught up and surpassed Alamy in $$$. This year my sales on Alamy are very slow. SS on the other hand, sales are increasing every month.

How about Adobe Stock if compared with Shutterstock?
@NicoleGlass

Adobe Stock can be great. But they do not accept editorial images. Considering the majority of what I shoot is editorial, it's hard to compare them. But for those people who shoot primarily commercial, I would highly recommend Adobe.

About 8 months ago I started uploading to 5 agencies. Out of those 5, Alamy is the ONLY one on which I have not sold even a single picture. The other 4 are doing more or less alright, with Shutterstock and Adobe Stock selling the most. To make matters worse, I just had a batch of 50 pictures rejected during QC because ONE (!!) of the 50 pictures (a night shot) had some noise in it. So, one picture has an issue, and Alamy rejects the remaining 49 UNSEEN? I think I'm about done with Alamy.

Hi, Really enjoy your videos and appreciate your sharing your wealth of knowledge regarding stock photography. I would like to get into stock photography but confused as to where to start, in particular what photos to upload for the initial screening. I have an library of over 20k photos of various subjects: landscapes, wildlife, flowers, trees, abstracts, etc. Is it better to upload beautiful images or the ones that are not so saturated and interesting but less glamorous? Or is it more important at the initial screening that they be good quality regardless of subject matter? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have the most photos of all on Alamy (330), but I’ve only sold three photos. Shutterstock sometimes rejects pics for seemingly arbitrary reasons. iStock accepts more than Shutterstock. At first, I sold the most on Shutterstock , but now I’ve have (slightly) more downloads on iStock. iStock sure pays better than Shutterstock, that’s for sure. Most of my pics are editorial, which Adobe doesn’t accept. But at least I have more downloads on Adobe than I do on Alamy!.

Nicole Glass My guess is that Alamy is more expensive to download from than Shutterstock so more people use Alamy. Also, Alamy buyers aren’t as interested in photos taken in the USA as they are in photos taken in Europe. I just uploaded some photos of apartment buildings and had to remind myself to use the word, “flats” instead. Not sure if I had to do that, but it certainly can’t hurt!

Shutterstock just rejected two photos for the main subject not in focus and noise/artifacts. Yet these same two photos were accepted by Adobe, Alamy and iStock. This happens more often than not. I stopped adding any extra clarity or dehazing, which helped my acceptance rate, but I still get the focus rejection. I’m not the only one, apparently. Has anyone else noticed this issue?

Hi Nicole, my comment isn't relevant to your question, but I hope you excuse me to write this here. Recently, most of my submissions got rejected by SS for "noise, film grain, compression artifacts and/or posterization.” It was like SS changed their criteria because most of my photos had been accepted until recently. I've been using the same camera and the same photo editor. So I almost lost interest in SS and started thinking about focusing on other platforms, then found this video. After seeing people's comments here, I learned everyone is doing fine, so I decided to struggle a bit more. But do you think SS uses AI to review photos? I did a lot of research on this matter and found quite many people struggling with the same issue. This may be a very low-level question, but I assume there are people like me who really need your advice. Anyway, I'll upload some more today! Thank you for motivating me. :)

I actually noticed that as well. All of my drone photos are getting rejected lately due to noise, even though all of them were previously always accepted. Alamy is Bull! They are only connected with a few news outlets when I found out the major ones don't purchase from them. USA Today Network news and Washington Post have their own photographers and only purchase directly from them if you freelance with them. If you are in Europe you will have a better outlet with Alamy because the company is more driven in those countries not much as SS is. Alamy is for European countries not so much for USA. I found out from someone that has been in Stock for 40 years and has talked to the agencies and outlets(publishers and media). SS sells more to USA and to the rest of the world. Alamy is more for European countries. China has its own stock site which they only purchase through there because rarely SS or any other stock sites show up on their heavily controlled internet in their country. Your best bet is to stick with Shutterstock. Nicole has put it out there what the reality is.

Never heard of Alamy before watching this video. Now, I know I'll just stick with Shutterstock. I'm still in the learning curve with not getting stuff rejected for what seems (to me) like stupid, nit-picky reasons...e.g. "visible trademarks," when in fact, they are NOT visible unless the image is enlarged so much that the main focus of it is too pixelated to even use! Or 'not in focus," when my camera is set on AUTO focus, so my 71-year-old eyes don't fool me, and they fail to take into consideration items with depth; things not on the same focal plane are not going to be as fully in focus as the foreground.

There are a few people in the comments who said they earn more on Alamy. So like I said, don't let me experience deter you! iStock is usually my biggest earner in £ and number of sales, then Shutterstock and Adobe.......Dreamtime and Bigstock usually both the same.....Alamy sits around the middle depending on how many sales, usually 2 or 3 month but each sales can be £20 to £30 after commission, I once sold an image on Alamy for £160 which sounded great and it is but I was disappointed they take 60% off that. With Alamy the sales number they show on the dashboard isn't what you get paid, it is their selling value so take 60% off it (unless you are selling exclusive images).
