I'm completely with Bob on this one. I would rather friends invite me to their hangouts, even to an activity they know I wouldn't particularly enjoy, than to be left out by default. finding out they met without even telling me would make me feel intentionally excluded, especially ifI don't get to see them often. at least give me the option. and then if I do decide to join, I don't get to moan about the agreed activity. Now to Monet's point of maybe choosing to do something that the entire group would enjoy, sure, that would be ideal, but it's not always feasible.

I remember when I was younger growing up in Catholic schools I really struggled with being queer and coming to terms with the fact that my peers and some of my teachers believed I was going to hell regardless of who I am. I devoted a big part of my life when I was young to charity and social justice as a way to prove to myself and those around me that I wouldn’t go to hell, but then I realized that a) I don’t believe in heaven/hell and b) it didn’t matter what I did to help people around me because they thought I was going to hell anyways, so I took that pressure off of myself because I believed and knew I was a good person.

As a white person, I understand (and absolutely respect) Bob's resentment toward whiteness. Even as individuals trying our best to be anti-racist, call others out, lend support, uplift others' voices, we still need to be aware that the chips are in our favor over POC, purely for the fact that we're white. I think people get hurt because they think they're not doing anything inherently bad, not realizing it's not about any one person. It's the collective. It's history. It's literal centuries. The least we can do is listen. Even if it's uncomfortable. Especially if it's uncomfortable. POC don't get to take breaks. It's time we stepped up. I own their resentment, because I understand where it comes from. That resentment is an opportunity for me to do better, and I care enough to want to be better.

I get you Bob. I’m South African and white people here are so frustrating to talk to about race and how our very recent history of segregation has affected our country. Like legit one of the political parties that is popular for white folk here was defending a racially motivated massacre that happened in like July/August this year. If the invitee has certain boundaries, they're perfectly capable of deciding whether they want to go or not. It's WAY better for your friend to politely decline and still feel included than having all these shady group texts specially created to exclude specific people.
