I think the part that is missed is that black people are still being oppressed over hairstyles. On one hand you have jobs or schools saying you can’t wear certain hairstyles. Then non black people running around with those same hairstyles like it’s a trend. If the oppression was taken out of the equation it would probably be less of a big deal but that’s not the reality.

When it comes to hair I think we often saw (/see) black women get absolutely shit on just for having their natural hair out. So many times people will call it 'messy', 'frizzy', 'nappy' or call the person 'lazy' for 'not styling it'. That's hurtful and rude. So I feel like black people have found ways to deal with this by switching hairstyles that work for their hair and help with growth + strength + easy maintence AND also prevent judgement/rudeness from white folks who don't understand how curly, kinky or coily hair works. I think that's why some black people feel offended by white people wearing those styles. White people can wear it because they wanna wear it. Black people might not always want to that but feel like they need to do that in order to not be judged or discriminated against. Especially on the workfloor it was a real issue (might still be to this day) where black folks got judged because they didn't look 'professional' or 'tidy' with their natural hair. White people getting all the love and praise in the media also does not help. Cultural appropriation is very American and very real because the way the media picks that up and runs with it. Never have I seen in any parts of Europe where a white woman worn a black hairstyle and either ended up in the news or had a huge platform where she claimed that she came up with the style. That only seems to happen in America. The Kardashians are very well known for it, and the media gobbles it up. Outside of America it's very often way less 'harmful' and more like cultural appreciation instead of appropriation. That's just my 2 cents on the thing as a non-American white person.

Finally someone who gets it! I'm Jamaican and it's so annoying seeing people use us to justify cultural appropriation just because most Jamaicans don't care or don't typically have conversations about it, like we don't care cos the vast majority of the population is black, I didn't grow seeing white people just parading around wearing our hairstyles so it just isn't a huge issue for us, but for black Americans who literally live next door to their oppressors it makes sense that they would care more about it and they should. Same with topics about representation.

We have to have braids as protective styles. My hair is natural and in the winter it drys out and breaks more. So, braids help protect it. It's also convenient when you have natural hair. It's a lot of work to have natural hair and having those protective styles just gives you some time back. As far as locks, it's religious to some. My problem is we get chastised for some of these styles and when a white person does it they get elevated. It's not diminishing but it's f*cked up!

It would be interesting to see y'all invite a sociologist (and other experts) on to help referee some of these discussions!! My $0.02: Cultural appropriation is "only a thing in America" (and some other places) because it's heterogenous. So when something is unfairly attributed or applauded on one group but bashed on another, it's not fair. It's not just Americans being offended by everything. It differs in places that are more homogenous. Also, participating in a cultural event or growing up with a certain group is different than having no connection to it and then trying to imitate it without respect to the origins. Cultural sharing as a whole is good and normal though!!
@Bri-ns5rm
@Bri-ns5rm Жыл бұрын
I also think that how we internalize our oppression as POC should be factored in. A lot of the willingness to share certain parts of our culture is bc we’ve been told it’s not valuable and/or we’re seeking (yt in particular) validation. Lots of us don’t see value in the things we do until a white person tells us it’s interesting. Obviously this is nuanced, but we can’t ignore how things are legitimized when shared and demeaned when it’s a closed practice.
@kellygreengables3936
@kellygreengables3936 Жыл бұрын
@@Bri-ns5rm Very good point that I did not think about! It's it's kind of like when a music artist is Indy but then gets way more recognition when they go mainstream. I feel like you can see this changing though and a lot of POC are trying to be more okay with incorporating their culture into these standardized/"whitewashed" spaces without that approval. Ex: There has been a push in people wearing more cultural attire/styles to corporate spaces (ex: patterned shirts with tribal prints).

i think a lot was missed in the “gatekeeping of black hairstyles” conversation. when it comes to most black hairstyles, it ties back to slavery. cornrows were used to keep grains like rice for slaves that went hungry, locs became a thing due to poor hair care. black hair is MORE than hair. there’s a line between appropriation and appreciation. and i definitely feel like non black people tramp all over black folk’s boundaries when it comes to black culture (mainly speaking on black american culture). lastly, as a kpop fan, there would be no kpop without black ppl. sm ent. ceo said himself that he was inspired by michael jackson and other successful black artists. no shade to kimchi or south korea as a whole, but her take on cultural appropriation doesn’t shock me lol

I think one of the differences in appropriation in america vs tourist to other places is the capitalist impact. People ask tourists to braid their hair and take part in carnival and other events because they get paid for the services and tourism puts money in the economies of these places/ people. In America, when people appropriate black culture (specifically) they are given credit for inventing/popularizing the hairstyles/dances/fashion/etc., all the while black originators are viewed as ghetto for the same things ON TOP OF THIS the appropriators are OFTEN making money because of the stolen culture, while the black originators are further still subjected to oppression in a climate ( America) that deems them as undesirable for the same things appropriators are praised for. Ie. "boxer braids" credited to yt women WHILE cornrows are seen an unacceptable hairstyle in many education institutions and unprofessional in many work environments. ALSO, it's unfair and unfounded to speculate that if we gatekept ANYTHING it would not become as popular. Who is to say that if only black people created and profited off of our creations that they would not have become as impactful. IT'S RACIST IDEOLOGY.

So using Puerto Rico‘s example is probably the worst example to use just because there’s not many in Puerto Rico situation where depending who you ask they will give you a different answer

I will add that there’s no evidence Norse people wore locs as a common hairstyle. They’d do lots of braided styles in order to protect the hair (simple plaits, especially when covered with a veil, are a great protective hairstyle for European hair textures), but there’s not really evidence for locs. This doesn’t change your point though ofc (I mean really me saying this is kinda ignoring the point but I just wanted to put that out there).

This conversation both of you had about gatekeeping and appropiation is so interesting and smart. Monét is absolutely right about these terms existing only in american culture... as a person from Spain that consumes a lot of american culture I'm sometimes confused about the issues that come up in your society because for us if someone from a different culture wants to sing and dance flamenco or take part in our culture it's something positive that makes us proud. However, I do also understand what Monét pointed out about USA being a young nation that still has to figure it out. Hopefully these conversations can help to move past this, because it's only holding you back as a society and creating segregation. We should strive for union and people mixing with eachother, not the opposite. Both of you have traveled and seen the world outside of your own context and it shows, but most north americans can be so ignorant sometimes. They have this habit of calling things 'european' or refering to people as 'european' as if it was a country or something when each european country has it's own thing. I love american culture, but please try to understand the world more accurately... the context of your culture doesn't apply to the rest of the world. Regarding Leiomy's gatekeeping... as much as I love and respect her as the stunning artist she is, that attitude only harms her and her community. Nobody is born voguing, culture is learned and shared. Let's be smart about things and let's not go with the flow of attention seeking twitter culture that basically promotes shock value instead of having a sane and progressive outlook on things.

The most accurate definition of cultural appropriation in my opinion is "when an opressive/privileged group takes pieces of a marginalized group's culture without respecting and/or giving credit to them." As a mexican american that feels they understand both sides when it comes to the discussion of cultural appropriation, what I believe most non-americans need to understand is that cultural appropriation isn't something as simple like a non east asian person wearing a kimono. Rather, cultural appropriation would refer to *HOW* the person is wearing the kimono. Are they wearing it because they actually appreciate and cherish east asian culture? Or are they just wearing it because they see it as a cute temporary "aesthetic" that they'll throw away like a costume the moment something else catches their attention without never taking time to understand the culture they're borrowing from. Edit: I'll also add some cultures are more acceptable to use than others due to historical context. An example of what I mean is the difference between the use of European culture and Native American culture. As a mexican, me and my people don't bat an eye when an indigenous person dresses in spanish garments because Spain colonized us and forced us to adopt their culture with force. But when a white person wears indigenous garments, we take great issue with that because white people did everything in their power to make the indigenous people hide their culture, so for them to appropriate indigenous culture like a silly costume is like a spitting on their faces.

@@Val17282 I respect your opinion and I agree with some things you say, but not completely... I think it's much more simple than all of that. Culture is global. We're all living in this reality together... saying otherwise is just part of politics and made-up things. It's wild to define people strictly for the place they were born... People are much more than that. All that is in this planet belongs to everyone, or at least it should. That's true wokeness, that's true progression... but people would rather support segregation and individualism because for some people it brings them validation. I agree that if you're disrespecting a culture you shouldn't take part on it... but what is disrespecting a culture, really? You're saying that you can wear a kimono if you're gonna participate in an asian ritual or something but you can't wear it temporarily just for the day lol... how is wearing a kimono just for the sake of it disrespectful, really? I understand some people may have disrespected cultures sometimes and that's not okay, but we can't take the exception to make the rule. If I go to Japan and burn a kimono on the middle of a ritual, I'm being disrespectful. If I just wear a kimono because I like it, I'm not being disrespectful. I'm just wearing a piece of clothing that I find beautiful. It's simple, we make it complicated.

@@rvm7070 The issue I have with the kimono example is that not every garment in cultures has the same sentimental weight to it. The kimono is a garment simply used for celebrations like weddings, more or less like a tuxedo, so wearing it won't cause as much backlash. But wearing a Navajo headdress is not considered okay under normal circumstances, since the garment is sacred garment to the Native Americans and their history, and they hate it when they see a non-native use it casually like a cute aesthetic. I hate myself for forgetting to mention this, but cultural appropriation is also about how privileged people (white people for example) will take things from marginalized peoples' cultures, and never give credit to the ladder and continue opressing them. One prime example of this is white and light-skinned non-black people getting lip fillers, black hairstyles, and acting "black." While these whits/light skinned people will get praise and seen as cool, the black people those trends came from continue to face discrimination, such as businesses/institutes banning them wearing black hairstyles, mocking them for their natural big lips, etc. Are we really creating more segregation, when we're just shining a light on the segregation that was already there? Why do these privileged folks get to be praised when they wear our cultures as costumes, but we get mocked and discriminated when we our own cultures? It is not as unifying as you believe. And not to disrespect you, but I feel your privileged upbringing in Spain (a country with a long history of colonizing and persecuting many countries including my own) is not giving you a full understanding of the issues we're trying address. Spaniards have for a long time used fashion from/inspired from Latinos, but then turn around and still see us as filthy and uncivilized and never give us credit for their trends.

It is a very Americanized way to talk about Black hair/culture when you sound like you do not understand Cultural Appropriation versus Cultural Exchange. Black people being oppressed economically down to our literal hair isn't a myth or something that we have to pontificate over. It's as if Bob has never heard of the Crown Act. I think the disconnect maybe conflating "Gatekeeping" and the actual fight for human rights. Free people aren't picked apart about their hair and skin. 😘😘

The more we gatekeep the smaller our audience will be. I think it’s importance to know why people gatekeep, which to me is appreciate the roots of an art or culture. However, that shouldn’t mean people cant be inspired by it while giving credit.

Question: Since high school, through college and now into adulthood I’ve been going to Jamaica…have spent months living with families in the mountains and became apart of the community there. These beautiful women would braid my hair, my thin wispy brown white lady hair-and i felt very honored. Then i come back to America…What do i do? Do i try and explain? Take them out? Tell these ladies next time that, as much as i appreciate their culture and am honored, it isn’t right and refuse due to views on appropriations? I love afros, when i was kid i wanted afro puffs so bad, to me there was nothing more beautiful…ok white girl…But i would never think of getting my hair done to that hairstyle, knowing the culture and significance to the culture. Sighs, the world is complicated and especially when we are just beginning to right so many centuries of wrongs.

No you are correct. Koreans actually honor you for wearing their cultural garb for weddings etc. This on girl was asked to wear it for her wedding by her korean husbands parents and white people online are flaming her. Culturally appropriating american black culture can be more sensitive.

😂 I’m mad as a people (black) we argue over literally the intertwining of strands of hair. I’m sure they all did it, do we think they just put their hair in a ponytail or wore it loose all the time? Hell no, they had nothing but time on their hands and sure they just figured it out! 😂
