When Monet said "trends weren't a thing for me in high school" it made me wonder about trends in the paleolithic; like if a girl pulled up with different kinds of shells in her necklace would the other girls think she was crazy or an icon and such.

well history can be seen as a big trend if you want. what we discover about ancient cultures is mostly the result of trends. if a person had a comb and the other saw that it was useful then it would become mainstream, religion itself can be represent as a trend, certain meat consumption could also be considered a trend. i think we are socially driven towards trends lmao

If you look at first humans objects we found, you will see how they all are very similar depending on their age. Primates, like humans, gorillas or orang-outang, all learn by watching others. So you see how the guy that has a sharper silex does it, copy it, the next person copies you, and next generation everybody knows how to do it. And then someone find something that's even better... And so on. That also can be compared to memes! It's a form of language we just all shape every time we use it. Add to it, modify it, build on it... Apes are funny little mammals that like to find ways of making life better any time they got nothing to do. Or Harlem shake, because, why not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There's no reclaiming of the swastika. It's a Buddhist symbol. It's on the chest of the Buddha next to Hong Kong airport. They've always used it. The Nazis appropriated it. No one in Asia associates it with Nazism.

For the Swastika there really is no need for reclaiming in the east at least as it has been continuously used in eastern cultures. For them the Nazi's using it was wierd but not somthing the would stop them from using a symbol that has been in use for millenia. It's somthing akin to if the Nazi's used the cross instead of the Swastika it would have been reclaimed immediatley in the west because of how important it is to Christianity. Also the original swastika is a a cross with arms while the Nazi one is an X with arms so there is a difference as people can recognise the different between the letter t and x.

I absolutely disagree with Bob on the issue with swastika. Just because some racist white dudes appropriated the swastika does not mean that followers of religions (which existed waaaaay before the nazis) cannot reclaim the swastika. To be fair if you travel around Asia you'll see in some temples. Hindi is the language not the religion. The swastika is a Sanskrit symbol used by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains.
@Val17282
@Val17282 Жыл бұрын
I disagree with him too. While I love Bob, his point felt very limited to an american perspective. As another comment said, by that logic, christians should stop using the cross because it was used as a symbol by European colonizers.
@steveb1155
@steveb1155 Жыл бұрын
I have a complicated relationship with this one. One on hand, like objectively, I think yeah it's not fair for this symbol to mean what it does now when it's been used by other cultures to represent an idea that is completely divorced from it's use by the Nazis. On the other hand, I'm Jewish, and subjectively when I see it in spaces where it doesn't make an obvious amount of sense (like in old temples, etc.) the symbol produces a pretty visceral response in me; I instantly think of how my grandpa's entire family was murdered, and I can't not think of that. When you grow up hearing stories about people who would have been here in your life time and now aren't, and seeing over and over again the symbol of the people that took that from you (because America really has this weird, almost exploitative obsession with Nazism in media) it makes it hard to not have such a strong reaction. So I get at least in some sense get why people think it can't be reclaimed.
@ElementerChannel
@ElementerChannel Жыл бұрын
@@steveb1155 Okay but as someone else pointed out, it's not something to "reclaim", because its use wasn't stopped in much of Asia. I don't expect it will gain mainstream acceptance in the west, but it will always be an eastern religious symbol used by people from Southern and Southeast Asia.

Variations of the svastika developed independently in many regions all over of the world. It's one of the oldest symbols known to mankind, the earliest archaeological finds are from the Near East (around modern day Syria and Iraq) from about 8000 BC. It's been part of many religious and spiritual traditions in parts of Europe, Mesopotamia, India, China, and can even be found in the Americas. It has been in continuous use in Hindu (not Hindi, that's a language), Buddhist, and Chinese religious traditions for thousands of years and is still popular in these regions. In antiquity it was also common amongst Germanic and Celtic cultures in Europe, so the Nazis didn't necessarily "steal" it from India, they more or less "revived" the use of the Svastika after it had been forgotten in Europe due to Christianisation. That being said, I'm actually with Bob on this one. If you live in the West, it's basically impossible to use a svastika without evoking nazi connotations, so "reclaiming" the symbol is probably not gonna happen anytime soon.
@Val17282
@Val17282 Жыл бұрын
In the West, I understand the generational trauma that can be triggered by such a similar symbol. But in the East, the people there shouldn't feel pressured to change their culture due to a tragedy they had no involvement in, especially a symbol they used for a millennia long before the start of the Nazi regimen.

The hypocrisy of Bob saying that a culture shouldn't try to take back their symbol, "not worth the squeeze" and that it would "never happen in his lifetime". But he will die on the hill of using the Nword and that's it's his right to use and reclaim a problematic word. I feel like the Nword has been reclaimed in his lifetime. Just seems very nearsighted on his part.
@TheRedScareIsAlive
@TheRedScareIsAlive Жыл бұрын
The n word was used against Black people. Black people didn't create it. Using the n word is taking back power from a group who used it against us. The equivalent would be Jews reclaiming the swastika for themselves. It's different. Swastikas has been used against them (and other minorities including Black people), not against the people who created that symbol. It's not their place to reclaim when it was used against them. It's the place of those affected by the symbol in its negative context

What a weird take on Swastika from Bob. It's like claiming black people can't use the N word because of it's negative history. Swastika is an important religion symbol in Eastern Culture. We don't really care who used it as what. You'll see it every Indian household on important religious event because it's considered auspicious. Most Indians have no interest in 'reclaiming' what's theirs.
