Love that final confrontation between Alejandro and Kate. It's not just him testing her to see if she'd pull the trigger, but also him not caring if she does because then he could join his wife and daughter. My favourite Villeneuve film.

8:28 Maple: "Is this true?" Ed Calderon said that when he completed his police training in Mexico, the first task he was given was a call that said "Bring the bolt cutters," and he was excited because he thought it meant that they were going to cut off a lock to bust into a drug lab or something like that, but instead, they were cutting the chains off of some corpses that were hanging from a bridge. One of the veteran cops commented to Calderon that the cartel that did this was being merciful, and when he asked "How is this merciful?" the veteran told him "They're letting the families have the bodies to mourn over."

I didn’t feel contempt as much as, is this guy useful to me or not? kind of vibe. His life is more just a transactional exercise in achieving his goals. Contempt to me, implies that he has any feelings, good or bad, towards the the person he’s using. I don’t think he does. Like, even Alejandro’s lust for revenge is just leverage he can use towards his own agenda.

I think that Alejandro put the gun against Kate's head as a favour. Everytime that she was given an out, she refused it, she just kept delving deeper and deeper into the whole situation, regardless of what it was doing to her. She would have probably signed the form eventually, going against everything that she believed she stood for, but this way she was able to keep her moral compass intact, she could tell herself that she was forced into signing it.

Nice, sicario is a banger of a a movie. Denis villeneuve simply don’t miss. Y’all should do the other 2 movies in Taylor Sheridan’s frontier trilogy, they’re a thematic trilogy of movies written by Sheridan that released b2b2b and they’re all amazing, hell or high water is so good even above sicario for me personally and wind river is fantastic too and Sheridan also directed that one. Wind river and especially hell or high water get so little attention from reactors compared to sicario which is a real bummer because they’re all amazing with stellar casts and fantastic direction and scripts.

I like the little bit of dialogie between Brolin and Blunt after the border crossing "you're giving us the opportunity to shake the tree" and "learn, that's why you're here", Brolin straight up tells her and the audience her actual involvement in the entire movie before it's spelled out to her and the audience at the end. With the learn part it's phrased like she's here to learn about what the cartels are actually up to and get some insight into the bigger picture but really it's learn that you're just a rubber stamp for us to do the shit that needs to be done.

Fantastic movie that really has you gripped, one of the best movies to do that in the last decade or so. My other one I always recommend is Shot Caller (2017), a criminally overlooked movie starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister from GoT you know) - and he's fantastic in this movie - together with a bunch of other highly recognizable actors. Regular family man Nikolaj makes a mistake and winds up in state prison, and once inside it's basically sink or swim. The movie actually opens with him being released from prison after his time is up, and we follow his struggle to complete one last deal he can't back out from, while the time leading up to and including the prison sentence is shown in flashbacks. It's just a gut-wrenching depiction of what the US state prison system does to its inmates, and what the inmates have to do to not become a target, a victim.

Biggest story I remember was that one of the high schools close to the border ended up with some bullet hole due to cartel disputes.
