Part 1 of a full guide of what to do in an emergency for your guinea pig, including how to recognise the signs that your guinea pig needs help now (it may not seem that serious, but any loss of appetite, weight and lethargy can quickly escalate into an emergency). This episode focuses on the vets, what to expect from them, honest advice regarding non-exotics and exotics-trained vets, and what kind of treatment plan you may expect. Pedro is the star of the show, following his recent (and ongoing) issues with bloat.

Sending a hug and snuggle to Pedro! My pleasantly plump furry potato, Buttercup, developed Bloat and GI stasis. I knew something was off as her poops got smaller then normal and turned a light tan. She also started looking like she was bulging on one side. I started EmerAid right off the bat and got her in to a vet as soon as possible. Her stasis was to the point that I had to inject the motility drug and constantly massage her gut for a week before she turned a corner. Six months later she is finally gaining weight, but there is still some blood in her urine and air in her gut. We have not been able to figure it out despite many tests. For her she gets a daily weight and I tap her sides as well. This all was triggered by her UTI medication. She has had UTI's before, but this was the first bad reaction. Watching your videos has been very helpful and reassuring. It is so true that knowing your piggies is half the battle.

Your videos on caring for sick guinea pigs are so important and helpful for guinea pig owners. It’s very hard to find experienced exotic vets (even when searching extensively) and your educational videos have helped me and I’m sure many others to care for their sick piggies. These are also helpful so that people know what to ask their exotic vets and what to expect from a good one. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experiences!

I can't over-emphasise the need to keep sickly piggies fed and hydrated when unwell. I recently had a disaster when all 6 of my piggies were gravely ill due to eating a poisonous plant. I had grown some spinach in a cloche but somehow another plant (possibly foxglove) managed to grow amongst the spinach without me realising. The first thing I noticed was when my youngest piggy died overnight and all the others were unable to stand, eat or drink. I braced myself thinking all of them were on their deathbeds because they were so ill. I kept syringe-feeding them and after 4-5 days all of them are back to their normal selves (another died as he refused to eat and just kept spitting out any food). I only have 4 piggies now but it could have been much worse if I hadn't kept digestive stasis at bay with round-the clock feeding. Be super careful what you feed your piggies. Foraging is all well and good until just one plant is wrongly identified or eaten by accident.

Very informative. When my elder daughter was at the end of her high school years, and for a short while after she married, she had a couple of guinea pigs; they were charming little pets, and we truly enjoyed them. Luckily, we never had any emergencies; they lived out their full expected life spans.

i want to share what happened with my baby Poppy. She died about less than 2 weeks ago. When i got her, she already didnt have a huge appetite. I thought that she would eventually grow out of it or that she was just like that. She was also always humping her cage buddy and I read up alot online that that was just normal dominance behaviour. She didnt eat as much as her cage mate, didn't grow as much even when I would feed her separately. But she was growing and active. She would pop everywhere (hence her name Poppy) and zoom everywhere. She loved playing outside her cage and would even do tricks for treats. She had ovarian cancer and she started to form lumps in her body. Within the time span of 1.5weeks, the lumps grew and took over her body to the point that when she had her surgery, they couldn't save her and she passed. We didn't expect it to turn so bad so quickly and I also did not notice the signs earlier. I constantly did my research (even read up on guinea pigs for 1 year before adopting) but none told me that humping her cage mate constantly was a sign of ovarian cancer (or maybe i just didnt see it...). She started forming crusty nipples about the time we noticed the first lump (and we brought her to the vet immediately ofc) and would always be chasing and humping her cage mate. If I could have a do-over, I would've just brought her to the vet and asked about her behaviour. I honestly tried my very best and regret that there was nothing more I could do for her. Even spending more than a thousand and hundreds of dollars couldn't save her. My dear Poppy, died at 1.5years of age. RIP. Best advice for all, if you're not sure, just bring them to the vet. The internet can only tell you so much.

Aloha from Hawaii!! Lovin all & learnin lots from all your videos thanx for all your HARD work & splendid dedication! I have 2 girls bout 6 1/2 years old that have been enriching me life since they were just wee little piggies: Ms Puffs, Peruvian short hair & Ms Lulu, Peruvian long hair. Ms Puff’s hair is kind of corse & she looks like Don King an American boxing promoter (but much, much cuter. We recently had a couple of health issues to deal with. Bout 2 months ago Puffs began having a mucus buildup in one eye soz off to the vet. No scratches, ulcers & no problems under the lens. Thankfully no need for icky antibiotics so he recommended using saline solution for contact lenses to be applied several X day. She was soon on the mend. 3 weeks ago Lulu developed the same problem but it looked worse. It was late on a Friday & had to wait till Monday AM to get her to our family vet soz I started with the saline straight away. Vet said the saline helped, if for no other reason than it soothed her eye. Her condition is indeed worse as she has an ulcer on the lens & a “small white elongated spot”under the lens. The amazing thing is that in less than 48 hours her eye had begun to heal! Lulu had to be put on an icky antibiotic regimen + the saline. One week later Lulu was much better! Docs (vet sought advice from a senior vet) took her off the yucky antibiotics due to the benefit/risk factor. The ulcer was nearly gone & most other thingys improving. The only other thing is the white patch which is “stable.” Neither had seen her condition before but concurred that surgery was possible but recommended against it. I asked if I should continue the saline & they approved; me regular vet said it was a good question & she wished more of her patients’ humans would ask questions. As for why the problem arose vet listed a lot but she noticed both have some bits hair loss, seen in some senior piggies, which allows bits of hay & dust to cause irritation. I felt rather dreadful when I heard the word “antibiotics” so for me the the best advice you have thus far given iz to find a vet you can TRUST and trust them! You are simply brilliant!

I can't wait for part 2, I recently lost my precious 'baby piggy', she was a bit over a year old and lost so much weight despite eating a lot she ended up being just a skeleton at 291 grams in the end with very mushy poops and the vet wasn't much help. Basically just survived on love in the end. That was 2 weeks ago and this week we lost 2 more from the same thing out of 11 piggies although they weighed a bit over 400grams when they went. We have another piggy who looks sick with the same thing and I'm hoping the advice will help, I'm not sure what to do they're kept safe in a big outdoor enclosure and keep eating but just keep loosing weight and get very thirsty, in the space of a week they look half their size and it's painful for them to poop. :(
@anaph8552
@anaph8552 Жыл бұрын
They are obviously not eating - their weight is just dangerously low and they basically starved to death. If it's painful fot them to poop then they probably have some digestion issues - give them some medicine for their digestion like Bene Bac and something to prevent bloat like Sab Simplex or Lefax. You should start syringe feeding them recovery food every 3 hours as fast as possible and get them to an experienced vet to figure out what's the issue with them. I can't believe a vet couldn't do anything...
@NeverEnding-Story
@NeverEnding-Story Жыл бұрын
@@anaph8552 Thankyou, the vet said it was cystitis with the first one so gave me medication for that despite my piggy being less than half her body weight and just said she probably wouldn't make it. It was an exotic pet vet. They eat but just poop it all back out in very big mushy poops but I'll definitely take your advice, thankyou!
@anaph8552
@anaph8552 Жыл бұрын
@@NeverEnding-Story Did you get antibiotics to treat the cystitis? If yes, antibiotics not only destroy the bad bacteria but also the good ones which are essential for their digestion. This leads to diarrhea. That's why they need a probiotic like bene bac to add the good bacteria and restore their digestion. Antibiotics can also cause a complete loss in appetite - that's why you have to syringe feed them recovery food every 3 hours to prevent them from starving. Guinea pigs can pass within 24 hours if they don't eat anything at all.
@NeverEnding-Story
@NeverEnding-Story Жыл бұрын
@@anaph8552 They gave me 2 for her, baytril (spelling?) And the metro.....one mentioned in the second video, now I realise that together they likely didn't do anything. I didn't know about critical care then and it was the first time a piggie had ever been sick as we've had them on and off for over 20 years! The vet didn't mention anything about the weight loss despite being less than half her weight or what to do for her so I thought the medication would help or at least she'd put on weight after taking it. I lost 3 piggies total because of the limited advice I took from the first vet who was incompetent then was about to loose a 4th and found another vet that was incredibly helpful with so much advice and tests (the first vet did nothing but clean and rehydrate my other piggy) and this piggy is actually getting better and has put on 100 grams in less than a week so far although is still underweight. Im very sad I didn't go to this other vet first but I know the information I need now should any piggies ever get sick again
@anaph8552
@anaph8552 Жыл бұрын
@@NeverEnding-Story Yes, BaytriI is an antibiotic which is also known for causing a lot of issues with guinea pigs. My piggies react really bad to it as well, they loss their appetite, get very bad diarrhea and bloat. And it's so important to know this can happen, so you are prepared to syringe feed them, give medicine to support their digestion system and watch their weight, if you don't want your piggy to die. I am sorry you had to learn it the hard way and lost your piggies due to an incompetent vet. 😢 I still can't believe the vet wasn't concerned about the extreme weight loss...glad you found another one! I wish your piggy a fast recovery 💚🍀

HiiI hope Pedro will feel better very soon, but I have a question. The island I live on, Mauritius, doesn’t have vets that take Guinea pigs, they are not really helpful and dont have many experience like u suggested. There are quite a lot of piggies here. I’m still looking around and I will still till I find a good one and I do many researches and I subscribed to u so for now they are fine but I know that one day they will need a vet and I love them too much to let them down. Before adopting them I thought I had the vet but I didn’t and the vet I thought would take them do not and they were quite a lot in a tiny cage so I had to save some and give them a better space and everything. So what should I do about that? And am I doing the right thing?

It sounds like someone enterprising should train to be a vet specialising in guinea pigs on Mauritius! *hint hint* The first thing to do should be to separate the boars and the sows to prevent more unwanted pups.
