Side Chain method explained to help with frequency masking and enhance your mix.
This method is useful towards the end of the mixing process for gaining a little extra separation and clarity without extra EQ moves or harder compression settings. My apologies for accidentally referring to the upright bass as a bass guitar a few times.

As always, nice work. I enjoy side-chaining as a clever and useful tool/concept, but for myself rarely use it? Seems to me depends a lot on the style of music and the instrumentation of the song in question. Sometimes that "overlap" is a build creating the tonal "meat" you wanted. Definitely a tool one should be aware of though. Biggest use in my book is classic "vocal de-essing"

dear @AudioMountain777 I'm a big fan of the mixes created in the 70s. For me they are the pinnacle of mixing. I feel I can hear everything without hearing any over-processing, and it's so vivid and beautifully glued. I assume the sound is coming from the used hardware and the way they mixed. I would kill to be able to replicate a similar sound. Do you have any tips how it could be approached? (most videos go for modern sounds) I thought maybe a match-EQ for each instrument and some vintage hardware simulation plugins might help (consoles, compressors and tape machine). How would you tackle such goal? Some example songs "Barry White - Love's Theme", "Julio Iglesias - Cucurrucucu Paloma", "Tom Jones - I Who Have Nothing"

I wonder about that myself. My favorite mixes from the 70's are still unmatched today, even with all the resurgence of analog emulators. And those mixes were typically done very quickly with limited gear; maybe a handful of compressors that every track was sharing. So why that sound hasn't been adequately duplicated or surpassed is a mystery to me.

Thank you for this nice video. I am not sure now when to use automation to make an instrument out of the way of the vocals and when to use this sidechain technique instead. Could you tell a bit about that please ?
@AudioMountain777
@AudioMountain777 6 ай бұрын
Great question. Both techniques are great. I use both. I lean toward side chaining dynamic EQ when I don't want the full spectrum decrease from volume automation.Dynamic EQ only dips out small sections of the spectrum when needed and then recovers, which can sound more natural and preserves the rest of the spectrum. I hear volume automation as more extreme, even if it's only a db or two. That's why I consider this particular side chain technique a finishing touch.

AWESOME content as always mate !! .. Just one query...😉 Will this much of sidechaining on different busses even after the original color compression (inserts working directly on busses / tracks) make the mix FEEL SMALL/ SQUASHED / OVER CONTROLLED... ? Kindly specify a workaraound if u facny... Eg - Deliberate less compression/ having parallel busses without the side chain EQs etc... Thanks heaps mate... ! 🎉🎉👊

That's a great point, and that's why I don't over EQ or over compress and leave dynamic space for side chaining. This jam here needs more automation as well, and has nothing on the master bus yet, but I wanted it mostly mixed before dynamic side chaining to for that very reason- to demonstrate that dynamic side chaining can alleviate the need for too much EQ and compression. Great question! Thank you!

@@AudioMountain777 Hello & Thanks heaps for taking time to reply... I have tried the Wavesfactory track spacer which only carves out the exact frequencies out of the compressed singal - but never have thought of being heavy multi dynamicish 😂 over Aux busses thus far... Once I approached a top down mix approach & had PREs- EQ - COMPRESSION - IMAGING set up on busses only to find my mix got unbelievably "smaller" though I'm know compression stuff well enough 😉... I guess I got too heavy handed with compression on Busses so It Really kept clamping down my dynamics big time - all the time...🙂... Kindly share your thoughts on ducking a music bus / pads using the vocals reverb a tad just to bring up the ''Depth Perception " of the vocals.... Thanks so much again for these wonderful insights & also taking time to reply your viewers... We are most serious about your channel & wish to see this prosper at its best... Cheers mate.. Hoping to see your take on multiband compression on Busses / Mix Bus to learn the thought process too... Much Love... Rezi from Sri Lanka.... 👊👊🎉🎉

Wow! Thank you so much! So glad to have viewers in Sri Lanka! Just to be clear, are you asking about side chain ducking other instruments reverbs to the vocals to further reduce reverb during the singing?

I used this technique and I can tell a difference in clarity in a positive sense. But there are parts where I feel the snare gets muffled at certain times. I have smack attack on the snares but they still seem to get lost when I dip at 1600. Any suggestions to keep snare from getting lost in the mix?
@AudioMountain777
@AudioMountain777 6 ай бұрын
Sure, a lot of snares need that 1-2 k range to cut through, so try 900hz or 3k instead. If that doesn't sound good or If the vocal and snare share the exact same clarity range of frequencies then try mid/side side chaining, so ducking the snare only in the mid channel and let the sides remain unattenuated.
