I made this video for my new canine freestyle ebook that will be finished and for sale on my website in a few days. I am just doing the finishing touches on it. It is loaded with information on dog training, trick training, canine freestyle of course (getting started to developing routines) 12 weeks of lesson plans if you would like to one day teach canine freestyle, and fun games to play with your dog that focus on canine freestyle.
I hope you enjoy this video on side stepping. Twix is still learning to side step! :)

Lauren L Thank you! I tried to train Behavior’s as I teach them, to show the process. Twix is now almost 10 years old and is recovering right now from his 3rd back surgery that he had Monday night. 😞 He is a great little dog! I love him so very much. Thank you for thinking he is cute! I am biased when it comes to Twix. In my eyes he is perfect! 😊

Lauren L Well I am sad to say, he just had his 3rd back surgery and is not walking yet. His surgery was Monday April 27th, but he is expected to make a full recovery. Before this surgery he was very active and one would never know he was almost 10. He will be back doing all the things he loves in about 3 months, maybe longer. He is a very special dog! My little heart dog!

Thank you! It was a lot of work in the beginning to train them to wait while the other is working and it still depends on what we are doing. Sometimes my youngest dog Twix will just get too excited, get up from where he is supposed to be, run circles around us, then go back and lay down. It is almost like he can't contain him self and has to move. However, most of the time they are great. :)

We just did this in benson's rally o class and I was thinking there must be a better way to teach it! So glad that you did a video on it! we'll be pros by next weeks class.

Great video, there are many ways you can use this motion that would look great into a routine such as have you dog in heel position (left or right) and side pass in or out direction.

As for my ebook, I am not sure how it all works. This is my first one. Once I finish it, I will be figuring out how to get it out to the public. :) I will also sell it as a hard copy, but to view the links one would have to type in the URL. I am attempting to finish it today. :)

I would keep repeating the bowl until you can get her to stay front. You can put front on a cue, but make sure she is doing the behavior first and understands the behavior. I trained Bandit my older BC how to heel and side on the box too. It took him a little time to figure it out. However, sometimes all it takes is a few steps and when they realize what you are clicking for, the light bulb goes on. :) Remember to click the movement and not being at your side. :) Click for being front.

I am sure luring would work, but it might take longer. Awesome! The rear end awareness exercise will really help!

She's just kind of having us put the dog in heel position then taking a step and luring them with a treat. But their instinct is to walk forward and then try to get back into heel. I'm sure he would've gotten it at some point, but this way is better! Luckily we already started on his rear end awareness!

YAY! I'm so excited to start this with Tessa. I can't believe how easy it is to teach. At my first attempt with this trick, I was having her target an object on the ground (so she would cross her paws). This is much, much easier. Just wondering, how do you transition to having your dog do side stepping in different positions like the heel position and the circle around you (what Bandit did at 4:42)?

BOTH... HAHA! I am 5'2" and I have tall BCs. So me being short makes them look extra tall. :)

Hi Pam .. thanks for the Vid ... you know i have a really SMALL dog :-) i can not put my hands in front of her head ... should i use a targetstick for that? ebook ... is it possible to read it on pc or just on kindle or something like that?

Hi, I have a problem. She knows rear-end-awareness, however I used it to go into heel position and when ever I trie to turn in a circle without the bowl she automatically moves into heel position instead of turning with me. Do you have any idea to fix this?

I am so sorry, I did not even think about all of you with small dogs. SORRY! I would think that a target stick would work. Maybe a wooden spoon with food on one side and nothing on the other and you could have him target the clean side and flip it for him to get a lick after she does the right behavior. This way you could still click. I have never tried that but it might work. If she keeps trying to get to the food on the other side you could have a separate one behind your back w/food.
