Some people hate Side by Side shotguns. Ant is one of those people! Simon is not!
What happens when we lock them in a room at a clay course with a bunch of amazing side by sides... will Ant be convinced?

I occasionally take a side by side game shooting and love it. Back in the early 80s, I think a few eyebrows would have been raised if you didn't game shoot with a side by side. I was invited as a guest back in the 80s when I was in my 20s and had to take an over and under as my side by side would not close properly. The shoot captain made me feel quite small, questioning its validity on a game shoot. I thought that he was completely over the top about it. I explained that my side by side was being repaired, and this was the only other gun I had. One of the other shooters could see that I was very uncomfortable with the line of questioning, saying to him, "Don't be such an old fart Gordon, If it was left to you, we would be crapping in a shed at the end of the garden. As you can imagine, it lightened an awkward moment, causing great hilarity. Nowadays, you very rarely see a side by side on a game shoot.

Haven't picked up a sxs in over 40yrs. I sat my semi autos on the rack. Bought a new 20 bore sxs. Shot four of six chucker out of the box. Not bad for an old dude and his spoiled German shorthair. Thanks to you sir. Well done.

I often shoot a 1870 damascus barrels hammer gun at game, and it's gorgeous, and I shoot it like hell, but I tell people that even if I miss, I bloody miss *in style* 🙂 One thing I would disagree a bit with the instructor is the forend hold -- HE demonstrated he actually *holds* the barrels and that's the way to do it, you can't 'lean' the forend on your hand like you do with a heavy O/U clay gun, you need to keep control of that forend, especially for the followup shot. That's my opinion anyway, I don't GRIP the forend, but I hold the barrels. And yes, it means that on some crossers, your fingers are in the way but you have to go at them on trust -- you won't see them. Pretty much exactly as when you shoot driven where you never really see the bird as you shoot thru it. As far as cart, I once straighed one of the FITASC at Andy Castle with my hammer gun shooting CompX 21g, and I was shooting with a pristinely clad Clay Shooter with all the gear, the Perazzi, the Fancy Gamebore, and the hand towel -- who obviously was gobsmacked that I was there shooting 60 yarders with 21g and an antique. Makes you day ;-)

A most enjoyable episode, thank you. I began my love of shooting with a Browning under/over, and within a few years became bored and switched to side-by-side game guns exclusively for EVERYTHING. The past forty years I have owned a number of vintage English, and contemporary Basque guns and enjoyed all of them. I particularly relish an observation Mr. Reinhold has either made or eluded to a number of times which is, 'the fun is in learning how to shoot these guns', and I concur wholeheartedly. I liked, too, his remarks about light cartridges. Our British shooting forebears perfected shotgun ballistics over a hundred years ago, and 'more is not better', lads. It has mystified me to see British cartridge manufacturers producing loads not too very unlike the American 'cannon loads.' I break clays and kill gamebirds with fibre wad, 1200 fps, 24 gram cartridges in my new AyA rounded action boxlock ejector (a beautiful, lovely handling gun, by the way), and 24 or 28 gram, fibre wad, 1200 fps cartridges in my English Webley & Scott boxlock ejector gun; little recoil and deadly results. Again, a wonderful and thoroughly entertaining addition to the other TGS side-by-side gun videos!

I bought my SxS on a whim. I had shot them when I was a teenager and thinking back I don't recall seeing an O/U on my local shoot. But anyway I bought it firstly for nostalgia maybe but I saw it also as a challenge. I shoot quite well with my MK38 etc but wanted that SxS experience again, and yes I am glad I did. Apart from the fact it brought back memories from decades past it was a new experience again. It took a couple of shoots to get used to the cast, comb etc so I added and extender as the stock was too short for me as the gun is from the 60's and was made when I was three growing up in the South Wales valleys whilst it was starting it's life in Northern Spain. I can see where Ant comes from as say for his work gun and he feels comfortable with his Beretta, and so it should be. As a fun nostalgic gun I like to fire my old Spanish, but then again I am retired so having a gun for work is no issue for me. Good work Simon I always enjoy your input and your knowledge of these guns is always enjoyable and informative. Cheers guys great work as usual, looking forward to the next regardless of the subject matter.

When I had a lesson many years ago by Ernie who had retired and had coached for Galloyn at Cambridge shooting ground, after a few shots the first thing he said to me was do you watch the ball or the bat. He was all about footwork and position to take instinctive shots which as a walked up rough shooter served me well. That probably explains which I can shoot let's say rabbit on clays easy but long crossing birds with to much sky and time get the better of me. Good video keep them coming

Great video. I’ve loved SxS shotguns since I was a teenage. I bought my first one at 16, a 20 gauge Spanish Kasnar import with money from my newspaper route. I’ve loved them ever since. For regulation clays shooting and long targets, it’s hard to beat an O/U. But I don’t enjoy it nearly as much. TGS and Simon, keep up the great work!

I shot my £170 side by side a couple of weeks ago it was a lot of fun even hit some big targets I think if I was to only own one gun and clay shooting and semi automatics didn’t exist it would be another side by side. I grew up shooting them and I don’t see any style difference between shooting a side by side or my current semi auto I like a fast handling gun that can be shot with minimal effort.

I shot my 725 MK2 for 5 years and I'm not bad at all with it. In the last year, I've added a modern heavy year old SxS with multi choke & single trigger, TWO hammer action SxS's and a 75 Victor Sarasqueta 6E twin trigger fixed choke. These 3 SxS's join my A400 semi auto and 325 & 725 O/U. The ones I love shooting the most are the SxS's. I'm somewhere down the middle of the age range and I have seen more and more SxS on the clay ranges. They are not dead.

Shoots just like Simon's. Good instruction by Simon move the gun by rotating the hip and shoulders, not pushing and pulling with the arms. I haven't used CYL choke but skeet choke can break targets out a lot further than expected with hard shot ie 6% antimony.

With SXS prices declining: If you are a younger person who really enjoys shotgunning, do find one for your safe. As you get older and get bored with the Autoloader you will be glad you did. Find a good one at the best price you can afford and it keep it at around 6.5 pounds or less. Pounds - Weight. I'm hearing that in England the prices are really dropping so its probably a great opportunity.

Once a guy matures a little he realizes shooting clays with something all flash and little soul is silly. About the same time he’s likely killed enough game that it stops being about the killing and more about the experience. Hard to beat the experience of shooting wild chuker/grouse/pheasant with a fine British double imho although I’m not sure about the flat caps and breeks but I’m only 60 so I still have time for growth 😁

The first shotgun I ever fired was an uncle's 28 gauge A y A No. 2. That's also the first gun I broke clay and killed quail with. When I got my first shotgun, it was a 20 gauge pump, and I couldn't wait until I was 18 and old enough to buy a gun closer to my uncle's A y A. On my 18th birthday, I bought a 20 gauge Ugartechea Model 30. I was still in high school. Now, on the clays course, I'd rather shoot my 28 gauge Yildiz SPZ ME, but shooting Callipepla californica, also known as "California quail" or "valley quai," it's a light, sub-gauge, splinter fore-end, straight gripped, double-trigger side by side that I still consider the right tool for the job, and what I'd rather have for close-flushing birds. I sold my Ugaretechea Model 30 in preparation to upgrade to a 28 gauge A y A 4/53 when I got side-tracked by the 28 gauge Yildiz SPZ ME O/U. It worked out for the best, as I wound up inheriting the 28 gauge A y A No.2 that I first hunted quail with, and having that, I'd have no need for a 4/53. As long as there's an Arizona desert north of Scottsdale that has valley quail to bring to bag, and as long as I am breathing air, the whole rest of the world might be finished with side by side guns, but I won't be until I breathe my last breath.
